Jabil Circuit announced an $80 million greenfield contract-electronics plant in Tiszaújváros, Hungary, in January 2000. The planned facility was described as roughly 250,000 square feet, but contemporary reports disagreed about when construction would finish: one forecast late spring and another September.

What Jabil announced

EDN reported on January 18, 2000, that Jabil Circuit planned to invest $80 million in a new plant in Tiszaujvaros, the Hungarian city now commonly written Tiszaújváros. The company made contract electronics, including printed-circuit-board assemblies and computer components. The project was described as Jabil’s first facility in Eastern Europe. EDN’s January 18, 2000 report

The $80 million figure was the announced project investment, not a reported construction cost already paid in full at the time of the announcement. A later capacity report quoted Merrill Lynch analyst Jerry Labowitz estimating that investment in the Hungary facility would begin at about $15 million to $20 million and grow to $80 million over five years. How large was the plant, and when was it expected to open?

EE Times described the planned building as 250,000 square feet. EDN also reported the 250,000-square-foot scale in a subsequent account of construction underway at the site. EE Times, January 26, 2000 EDN’s capacity report

These January reports give different completion expectations. They do not establish which forecast was ultimately met, so neither date should be treated as a confirmed opening date.

Why Jabil chose Hungary

The project fit Jabil’s expansion of outsourced electronics manufacturing into lower-cost international locations. A Central European base could serve customers seeking contract manufacturing and printed-circuit-board assembly outside North America. Contemporary coverage placed Hungary alongside Jabil’s broader capacity expansion, including activity in Mexico.

Advest analyst Thomas A. Moro described the appeal as “strategic low cost manufacturing” for North American contract electronics manufacturers. EDN’s announcement report

What became of the Hungarian operation?

Later records show that the project became a continuing Jabil manufacturing presence in Tiszaújváros. Jabil’s current global-entities directory lists Jabil Circuit Magyarország Szerződéses Gyártó Kft. at Huszár Andor út 1, H-3580 Tiszaújváros, Hungary. Jabil’s global-entities directory

The Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency (HIPA) says the subsidiary began operations in 2000. In its account of a logistics-development project, HIPA describes the Tiszaújváros factory as Jabil’s largest manufacturing facility in Europe and third largest worldwide, with almost 3,500 staff at a 54,000-square-metre factory. Those are figures reported in that HIPA account, not a current headcount or a measure of the original 2000 project alone. HIPA’s account

A U.S. Department of State Hungary Country Commercial Guide published in 2001 also listed Jabil Circuit as a U.S. foreign investor with $80 million in foreign capital invested in electronic equipment. That provides a later government-record reference to the investment, distinct from the original announcement. U.S. Department of State, 2001 Hungary Country Commercial Guide

For scale only, Jabil’s current corporate overview describes a global network of more than 120 manufacturing sites across more than 30 countries and more than 35 million square feet. Those present-day company-wide figures are not measures of the Hungary plant or its 2000-era footprint. Jabil’s global locations page
