Mike Hackworth, the co-founder and longtime chairman of Cirrus Logic, died on April 21, 2012, aged 71. The company announced his death two days later. Hackworth helped establish the fabless semiconductor model, in which companies design chips while outsourcing their manufacture to external foundries.

Who was Mike Hackworth?

Michael L. “Mike” Hackworth was an electrical engineer and semiconductor executive whose career included leadership roles at Cirrus Logic. He graduated from Santa Clara University in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Before co-founding Cirrus Logic, he worked at Motorola, Fairchild Semiconductor and Signetics, where he spent much of his early career. EE Times and Serra High School’s memorial recount his education and career.

What did Hackworth do at Cirrus Logic?

Cirrus Logic was founded in the Silicon Valley area in 1984, and Hackworth became its president and CEO in 1985. He led the company through its 1989 Nasdaq public offering and the 1991 acquisition of Crystal Semiconductor. In February 1999, he stepped down as CEO in favor of David French but continued as chairman until his death. The company’s history and SEC-filed shareholder letter describe his leadership and the company’s milestones.

The founding and leadership dates refer to different events: Cirrus Logic’s company history dates its founding to 1984, while company and trade accounts place Hackworth’s appointment as president and CEO in 1985.

Why is he associated with the fabless semiconductor model?

A fabless semiconductor company designs chips but depends on outside foundries to manufacture them, rather than operating its own fabrication plants. Hackworth helped build Cirrus Logic around that approach. In its statement following his death, the board said: “In creating Cirrus Logic he led the way for the fabless semiconductor industry, and with the company’s success proved that ‘real men really don’t need fabs.’” The company’s shareholder letter also described him as a pioneer of the fabless model. Cirrus Logic’s board statement and the shareholder letter record those remarks.

When did Mike Hackworth die, and how old was he?

Hackworth died on April 21, 2012, at age 71. Cirrus Logic issued its public announcement on April 23, 2012. The company’s memorial materials identify his lifespan as 1941–2012; the death age and announcement date are also reported in the company’s statement, EE Times and Serra High School’s memorial.
