Gold prices differ because a karat measures purity, an online tracker shows a calculated reference value, and a dealer quotes a price to buy or sell a specific physical item. To compare two figures fairly, match the purity, weight unit, currency, time, and transaction type—and check which fees or premiums each includes.
Why is the gold price different for 18K and 24K?
Karat, also written carat in some markets, describes gold purity—not an item’s weight. Weight is measured in grams or troy ounces. The World Gold Council gives 18K as 75% gold and a typical 22K yellow-gold example as 91.7%; 24K is the pure-gold reference. The Council’s gold-jewellery guide explains caratage and alloy composition.
For a rough contained-metal comparison, multiply the 24K reference value for a given weight by the gold fraction:
- 18K: 24K reference × 18/24 = 75% of the reference.
- 22K: 24K reference × 22/24, or about 91.7%.
This estimates fine-gold content only. It assumes the stated karat accurately represents the item and excludes fabrication, fees, taxes, design, and other product features. It is not a finished retail price or a guaranteed resale offer.

Purity marks are not always a literal conversion of the karat fraction. The Council notes that 24K is commonly marked .999, with refining sometimes reaching .9999; legal minimums and accepted tolerances vary by market. It also notes that 14K is commonly marked .585, although 14/24 is approximately .5833. Gold alloys contain other metals, which can affect durability and color—for example, copper contributes to rose-gold color—but there is no universal price adjustment based only on alloy recipe.
Why do online gold price websites show different prices?
A tracker is a data product with a source, observation time, unit, currency, and calculation method. A displayed difference does not by itself mean one site is wrong.

- EXTRA-PRECISION POCKET SCALE: Weighs up to 500g with 0.01g readability and features an extra-large stainless steel platform for jewelry and findings.

- POWER & WARRANTY: Powered by 2 AAA batteries and features a black EZ-grip finish. Includes protective covers and a 5-year limited replacement warranty from GemOro.
- Different data feeds: The World Gold Council says its interactive chart’s price data is supplied by FastMarkets. Gold-Rates.org says it retrieves gold and foreign-exchange data from the GoldPriceZ API. These are distinct disclosed pipelines, not evidence that either is inaccurate. See the World Gold Council chart and Gold-Rates.org methodology and rates.
- Different observation or refresh times: Prices move, and sites may update at different moments. Gold-Rates.org says its pages show the last cache refresh and may retain the prior successful observation when an update fails.
- Currency conversion: A local-currency figure depends on both the gold reference and the foreign-exchange rate. The World Gold Council says it converts using the rate at or near the time of the gold price. Gold-Rates.org says currency refreshes run in a rotating queue, so markets may update at slightly different times.
- Different weight units: The World Gold Council chart offers units including ounces, grams, kilograms, tonnes, taels, and tolas. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams; it is not the ordinary ounce.
- Purity adjustment: A site may show a pure-gold price or calculate a lower-karat reference. Gold-Rates.org describes calculating other karats as the 24K price multiplied by karat divided by 24.
- Different inclusions: A spot-based reference may omit retail costs. Gold-Rates.org says its reference values normally exclude taxes, making charges, dealer spreads, refining costs, assay fees, brand premiums, and collectible value. Its city pages do not guarantee that every local shop offers the displayed rate.
Before treating a gap as an error, align the source, timestamp, currency, unit, purity, and what the figure includes. If the values still differ materially, check the providers’ stated methodology and whether one display is delayed.
Why is a jeweler charging more than the gold price online?
An online reference is not necessarily an executable offer for a physical product. A dealer’s ask—the price a customer pays—can start with contained-metal value and include a product premium and transaction costs. A dealer’s bid—the amount paid to a customer selling gold—may account for verification, handling, resale, and risk. GoldObserve describes the distinction in its guide to gold dealer pricing: “The customer buys at the dealer ask and sells at the dealer bid.”

For a coin, bar, or piece of jewelry, the quoted price may reflect fabrication, distribution, inventory, payment processing, delivery, insurance, verification, and operating costs. Quotes can also vary with volatility, stock, quantity, payment method, whether the product is recognized, and its condition. Compare like with like: the same item and quantity, at the same time, with matching payment, delivery, inspection, and settlement terms. Ask for costs in writing and compare quotes taken at roughly the same time.
Why the price you pay can differ from the price you receive
The ask and bid are opposite sides of a transaction, not two versions of the same guaranteed value. A customer buying from a dealer pays the ask; a customer selling to a dealer receives the bid. GoldObserve calls spot “a wholesale reference.” Delivery and purchase costs can widen the gap between buying and selling.

For jewelry resale, do not assume that design or labor charges will be recovered. A scrap or jewelry offer may be based on estimated recoverable fine gold less processing costs. Stones, solder, and non-gold parts can affect the counted weight, and the dealer’s examination and terms determine the result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare a tracker value with a dealer quote
- Record the reference: Note the tracker or other price source and its observation or refresh time.
- Match the basis: Use the same currency, exchange-rate context, and weight unit. Confirm whether the weight is in grams or troy ounces.
- Account for purity: Record the item’s stated karat and the fine-gold fraction used in the estimate. A scale can verify gross weight, but it cannot establish purity or recoverable fine-gold content.
- Identify the transaction: Label each number as a reference metal value, dealer ask, or dealer bid; do not compare an ask with a bid as if they were interchangeable.
- List additions and deductions: Check for making charges, taxes, premiums, assay or testing fees, shipping, insurance, and payment fees.
- For a resale quote, pin down terms: Confirm the exact item and condition, buyback formula, quote expiry, and settlement timing.
These comparisons are geography-neutral: taxes, dealer terms, and legal purity standards vary by market. Tracker methods and live data can change, so consult each service’s current methodology and displayed refresh time.
