You can buy SOL through a cryptocurrency exchange or a purchase provider built into a wallet, then either leave it in the provider’s custodial account or transfer it to a self-custody wallet. The right route depends on your location, fees, withdrawal options, and whether you want the provider or you to control the signing keys. For a transfer, confirm the supported network and recipient address before signing, and keep any self-custody recovery phrase private and offline.
Choose how to buy SOL
Common routes are a centralized exchange or an on-ramp integrated into a software wallet or hardware-wallet companion app. Depending on the provider, a wallet purchase may deliver SOL directly to your wallet address. Providers, payment methods, identity checks, fees, and availability vary by service and jurisdiction; there is no universal cheapest or best route.
Before buying, compare the details shown for your specific transaction:
- Custody: Find out who controls the signing keys and how account access can be restored.
- Total cost: Review the current transaction preview for purchase or payment charges, spread, network costs, and any withdrawal fee.
- Availability and verification: Confirm that the service operates where you live and check what identity verification it requires.
- Withdrawal support: Check whether you can withdraw SOL to your chosen wallet, which network is supported, and whether limits apply.
- Recovery: Understand the provider’s account-recovery process, or the backup responsibilities you take on with self-custody.
Fees, limits, policies, and supported services can change. Check the provider’s current terms and the figures shown before confirming rather than relying on a general fee estimate.

Decide where to keep the SOL

An exchange may suit someone who values a familiar account and does not want to manage a recovery phrase. A self-custody wallet may suit someone who wants direct key control and is prepared to protect the backup. Neither choice removes the need to assess the provider, secure access, and review transactions carefully.
Transfer SOL from an exchange to a wallet
Use the wallet’s receiving address for SOL and select only a network supported by both the exchange withdrawal and that destination. Coinbase’s withdrawal guidance warns that selecting an unsupported or incorrect network can result in permanent loss; follow the network instructions associated with the destination address.

- Open the destination wallet. Choose its receive option for SOL and copy the receiving address. Make sure it is the wallet account address, not a token mint, program, or token-account address.
- Start a withdrawal at the exchange. Select SOL as the asset and choose the network supported by the destination wallet.
- Enter and inspect the address. Paste the address, then compare its beginning and end with the address shown in the wallet. Do not rely only on a saved contact or a previous transfer.
- Review the confirmation screen. Check the asset, network, destination, amount, and fees before authorizing the withdrawal.
- Consider a small test transfer. For a new address or setup, send a small amount first. Wait until it arrives and is spendable before sending a larger balance. A test does not replace checking the full address, asset, and network.
Assets with similar names on different networks are not automatically interchangeable. Do not assume a withdrawal can be recovered if the asset or network is wrong.
Check the recipient carefully for native SOL
Solana’s official Verify Address documentation warns: “Sending funds to the wrong address can result in permanent loss.” It also distinguishes native SOL transfers from some SPL-token transfers: native SOL does not have the same mint and account checks that can reject certain token mistakes. A System Program transfer may add SOL to an unintended account, and the sender may be unable to retrieve it if that account’s program controls its lamports.

For native SOL, verify that the destination is a wallet account and that the address matches the intended recipient before signing. Never substitute a token mint, program, or token-account address for a SOL wallet address.
Protect a self-custody recovery phrase
A recovery phrase is a critical backup credential, not a support password. Anyone who obtains it may be able to control the wallet. Keep it private and backed up offline. Do not photograph it, store it in an unsecured cloud document, send it to someone claiming to be support, or enter it on a site reached through an unsolicited message. Wallet-provider documentation cautions that a provider may be unable to restore a lost phrase.

If you disclose the phrase, treat the wallet as compromised. Using a trusted device, create a new wallet and carefully move assets to it, checking each destination and transaction before confirming. Do not reuse the exposed phrase.

A compatible hardware wallet keeps signing keys offline and can be an option for people who prioritize isolating transaction signing. It is a physical product with its own cost and setup requirements, and it does not make a risky transaction safe or replace a protected recovery-phrase backup. You still need to review what you are signing and protect the recovery information.

Compatibility depends on the exact hardware model and the wallet software used with it. Check current documentation from both providers before choosing a device or app; support can change. Solana does not endorse one official wallet.
Keep test networks separate from real SOL
Solana’s CLI reference distinguishes development and test clusters from mainnet: devnet and testnet tokens have no value, while mainnet commands use real SOL. Keep development keys and test assets separate from the wallet you use for real funds, and confirm the active cluster before using developer tools or sending assets.
