How to Stake Solana: Choose a Validator, Estimate Rewards, and Unstake SOL

Native Solana staking delegates a stake account to one validator at a time. Learn how to stake, assess validator performance and commission, estimate variable rewards, and withdraw after deactivation.

To stake SOL natively, use a staking-capable wallet to create or fund a stake account, then delegate that account to a validator. Delegation does not transfer ownership of your SOL, but the stake is not immediately spendable: it must activate before earning rewards and become inactive before you can withdraw it. Rewards vary with network conditions and validator performance, so no fixed APY or exact unstaking time is guaranteed.

How native Solana staking works

Native staking uses a dedicated stake account rather than simply marking SOL in an ordinary wallet as staked. You assign the stake account to a validator, which adds its stake weight to that validator. The account retains its defined stake and withdraw authorities; delegation itself does not give the validator ownership of the SOL.

The stake authority can delegate, deactivate, split or merge the stake account, and change authorities. The withdraw authority can withdraw undelegated stake and update authorities, including resetting the stake authority. Protect the withdraw authority carefully because control of it can ultimately determine whether funds can be withdrawn.

A stake account can be delegated to only one validator at a time. To spread stake across validators, use separate stake accounts or split an existing one. Adding SOL to an account that is already delegated does not automatically delegate the newly added SOL.

How to stake SOL through a wallet

  1. Choose a wallet that supports native Solana staking. Wallet interfaces differ, so follow the wallet’s current staking flow and verify that it creates or uses a stake account rather than a different product such as a stake pool.
  2. Keep SOL available for fees. Solana transactions require SOL for fees. The network fee documentation describes a base fee and an optional prioritization fee; the amount is not fixed here because it can depend on transaction conditions. See Solana’s fee documentation.
  3. Create or fund a stake account. Review the displayed stake and withdraw authorities and any lockup settings before confirming. Save transaction details and make sure you understand which account controls withdrawal.
  4. Select a validator and delegate the stake account. Check the validator’s current commission and performance information, then review the transaction before approving it. Delegation takes effect through epoch-boundary state changes rather than instantly.
  5. Confirm the account’s status. Use the wallet’s stake-account view or a Solana account explorer to verify that the transaction succeeded and whether the stake is activating, active, deactivating or inactive.

Technical users can perform the same general actions through the Solana CLI, whose documented commands include solana create-stake-account, solana delegate-stake, solana stake-account, solana deactivate-stake and solana withdraw-stake. The CLI reference identifies Agave v4.2.1; check your installed release and selected cluster before running commands. A transaction on mainnet moves real SOL. Consult the Solana CLI reference for current syntax.

  • Commission: The validator takes a commission from inflationary rewards; the remainder is allocated to delegated stake. A lower commission may improve the delegator’s share, all else equal, but it does not compensate automatically for poor performance.
  • Vote performance: Solana’s reward allocation reflects vote credits for votes that land on blocks ultimately appended to the chain. A validator with weaker performance can produce lower rewards than a more consistently performing one.
  • Network participation: Delegating adds voting weight to that validator. If you prefer not to concentrate all of your delegated stake with one operator, split it across multiple stake accounts or split an account.
  • Transparency and current metrics: Review recent, current validator data rather than relying on an old ranking or a past commission figure. Commission, performance and network conditions can change after you delegate.

Solana’s official staking FAQ points readers toward community-operated validator metric tools, but no current ranking or individual validator statistics are established here. Check the date and methodology of any metrics you use.

How to estimate Solana staking rewards

Solana calculates and issues rewards once per epoch. The official staking FAQ describes an epoch as approximately two days; rewards earned in an epoch are issued at the start of the next one and deposited in the stake account, where they are automatically redelegated as active stake. The epoch length is context, not a promise about the exact timing of a particular transaction.

There is no fixed personal staking APY. Network yield changes with inflation and the proportion of SOL actively staked. Your result also depends on the validator’s vote performance and commission. For a useful estimate, use current network or calculator inputs and state the assumptions: SOL amount, network-yield assumption, validator performance assumption and commission. Show a range or scenarios, date the estimate, and distinguish gross network yield from what the delegator may receive after commission and performance effects.

The official FAQ lists an 8% initial inflation rate, a −15% annual disinflation rate and a 1.5% long-term inflation rate. The page does not state a year for those schedule parameters. They describe an inflation schedule, not a current realized staking APY or an individual return. Its idealized yield models also omit factors such as uptime, commissions, potential throttling, slashing incidents and changes in the share of SOL staked.

How to unstake and withdraw SOL

  1. Submit a deactivation transaction. This changes the stake account’s status to deactivating or cooling down; it does not immediately make the SOL withdrawable.
  2. Wait until the stake is inactive. Activation and deactivation finish at epoch boundaries and may take several epochs. Solana’s stake-account documentation explains that only a fraction of a delegation may become active or inactive at each boundary, so the exact duration depends on network state and other stake transitions. Approximately two days per epoch is useful context, not a guaranteed unstaking schedule. See Solana’s stake-account documentation.
  3. Withdraw the inactive stake. Once the relevant stake is inactive, submit a withdrawal to a wallet address. A lockup can still block withdrawal until its specified date or epoch has passed.

If you want to reduce exposure to a validator without deactivating the entire balance, Solana’s staking documentation describes splitting the stake account and deactivating only one portion. The remaining portion can stay delegated, subject to its own account status and applicable rules.

Risks and alternatives to direct delegation

Key risks to account for

  • Variable rewards: validator performance, commission and network conditions can reduce realized rewards relative to an estimate.
  • Limited immediate liquidity: a delegated balance must complete deactivation before withdrawal, and a lockup may impose an additional restriction.
  • Authority security: protect the keys or wallet controls associated with the stake and withdraw authorities.
  • Slashing: Solana’s FAQ states, “On Solana, slashing is not automatic.” It describes slashing as possible following an attacker-caused network halt and restart. This qualification does not mean staking is risk-free.
  • Transaction fees: staking and withdrawal actions are transactions and require SOL for fees.

Direct delegation versus a stake pool

With direct delegation, you select the validator associated with your stake account. A stake pool is a separate programmatic option: you deposit SOL and receive pool tokens representing ownership in pooled stake, while a manager directs the stake. Compare these options based on validator choice, dependence on the provider or manager, token and redemption mechanics, and the action and time required to regain SOL. The available official material describes the pool structure but does not assess any named pool. More detail is available in Solana’s staking overview.
