At Qualcomm’s November 19, 2024 Investor Day, Nakul Duggal presented automotive and industrial IoT as platform businesses: Qualcomm aims to combine computing hardware with software, AI, connectivity and services rather than sell chips alone. A separate EE Times interview published November 22 described the company’s automotive design-win pipeline as $45 billion. That is a 2024 figure, not a current estimate.

What was the interview, and what did Duggal oversee?

The exact item is an EE Times video interview with Duggal, Qualcomm’s general manager for automotive, industrial and cloud, conducted with TIRIAS Research and published November 22, 2024. Its description highlighted Qualcomm’s $45 billion automotive design-win pipeline. The broader context is Qualcomm Investor Day, held November 19, 2024: Duggal’s remit included automotive, industrial and embedded IoT, and cloud computing. His presentation covered automotive progress and roadmap strategy, AI, driver assistance and automated driving, investment through the rest of the decade, and a revised industrial-IoT roadmap. Qualcomm’s Investor Day event page lists his presentations and the full transcript.

What is the Snapdragon Digital Chassis?

Duggal described the Snapdragon Digital Chassis as a vehicle-computing platform spanning cockpit systems and automated driving. Rather than a single component or feature, it is intended as a compute fabric that automakers can configure across vehicle trim levels and develop over a vehicle lifecycle that can exceed ten years.

Qualcomm’s pitch is that the platform should be safe, reliable, high-quality, AI-ready, open and programmable. Those qualities address a practical automaker challenge: vehicles need computing and software that can support different price points and features while remaining maintainable over a long production and ownership life. As Duggal put it in the Investor Day transcript, “The software defined vehicle requires tremendous versatility, agility, and options for the automaker.” The transcript is available through Qualcomm’s event materials.

What did Qualcomm say about its automotive pipeline?

The EE Times/TIRIAS Research interview description reported a $45 billion automotive design-win pipeline in 2024. A design win means an automaker has selected or plans to use a supplier’s technology in a vehicle program; it is not the same as revenue already earned, a guaranteed order, or a measure of current sales. The figure should therefore be read as a pipeline claim in the context of that 2024 interview, not as a 2026 update.

At Investor Day, Qualcomm’s transcript said approximately one third of that pipeline was associated with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and automated driving. This gives a sense of the mix Qualcomm presented at the time, but it does not establish how much of the pipeline later converted into shipped vehicles or revenue.

How does Qualcomm frame industrial IoT and edge AI?

Qualcomm’s industrial-IoT strategy goes beyond processors. Its 2024 explanation describes a combined blueprint of hardware, software, edge-AI infrastructure, services, deployment solutions, and location or observability services. The named enterprise processor family is Qualcomm IQ Series. The goal is to support complete deployments, not just provide a chip for another company’s product.

The organizing idea is the edge: computing and AI capabilities near devices, machines or users, connected to networks and cloud resources as needed. Qualcomm described reusable blueprints for healthcare, retail, energy and enterprise, alongside the ability to tailor solutions to particular industries. Its account of the strategy and the cited industry forecast appear in a Qualcomm announcement dated November 20, 2024.

Qualcomm cited IDC’s projection that global digital-transformation spending would reach $3.4 trillion by 2026. This is an IDC forecast cited by Qualcomm in 2024, not spending reported by Qualcomm or a statement of actual 2026 results.

Who is the industrial-IoT strategy aimed at?

The ecosystem is part of the product strategy. Qualcomm identifies system integrators, resellers, developers and large enterprises as participants in bringing deployments to market. For teams exploring the platform, Qualcomm points to the Qualcomm AI Hub and the Qualcomm IoT Solution Framework as developer and solution resources.

That approach differs from a chipset-only sale: Qualcomm is positioning itself to support hardware and software integration, deployment and ongoing services. An enterprise may still work with integrators or other partners to deliver a solution; the strategy does not mean Qualcomm alone supplies every part of a finished industrial system.

How do the automotive and industrial strategies differ?

Dimension Automotive Industrial IoT
Primary setting Vehicle systems, including cockpit and driver assistance or automated driving Connected devices and industrial or enterprise deployments, including healthcare, retail and energy
Where computing is emphasized Vehicle computing, with a platform spanning cockpit and driving functions Edge computing connected to cloud resources and networks
Offer described Snapdragon Digital Chassis, framed as a configurable, AI-ready and programmable vehicle platform IQ Series processors within a wider hardware, software, AI, deployment and services blueprint
Key participants Automakers and vehicle-program partners Enterprises, system integrators, resellers and developers

These are strategic emphases in Qualcomm’s Investor Day and contemporaneous company materials, not a complete map of every product or customer in either business.

What the interview and Investor Day do—and do not—establish

Taken together, the interview and presentation show how Qualcomm described its growth strategy in late 2024: vehicle computing built as a long-lived platform, and industrial IoT built around edge intelligence plus an implementation ecosystem. They provide management’s strategy and pipeline figures at that time. They do not, by themselves, verify later pipeline conversion, product adoption, financial performance or the present status of the 2024 targets.
