A crypto payment token and a payment network do different jobs: the token is the value being transferred, while the network carries payment instructions or moves that value between participants. They can work together. For example, a stablecoin may fund a card purchase that reaches a merchant over Visa’s network; the merchant may receive an ordinary card payment rather than a direct stablecoin transfer.
What is the difference between a token and a payment network?
- Token: A digital asset or representation of value. A stablecoin is designed to maintain a relatively stable value, commonly by tracking a fiat currency. Bitcoin and Ether are crypto-assets, but that does not make them stablecoins. Visa explains the stablecoin concept in its stablecoin overview.
- Network or rail: The system that carries payment instructions or transfers value. In a direct stablecoin payment, the blockchain is the transaction network. In a stablecoin-funded card purchase, the card network can carry the merchant transaction.
- Wallet or provider: The software or service used to hold, send, receive, convert, or safeguard tokens. The term “wallet” does not by itself tell you whether a provider or its customers control the assets.
- Settlement: How payment obligations between providers and merchants are completed. The token, the network, the wallet provider, and the settlement process may all be different parts of one transaction.
So these are not always competing alternatives. A buyer might send a token directly to a compatible recipient, or use a token balance to fund a card payment. Visa says most merchants do not accept stablecoins directly; a linked card can bridge a wallet to the familiar card acceptance system.
How can a stablecoin-funded card purchase work?
Visa describes a flow in which a customer uses a card, the card program checks the wallet balance through an integration or API, reserves the equivalent value, and converts it as needed. The merchant sees a Visa transaction, while much of the blockchain activity remains behind the scenes. The precise funding asset, conversion point, fees, controls, and customer rights depend on the card issuer and program.
Visa describes both conversion to fiat before card-network settlement using banking rails and an emerging model in which participating issuers settle directly with Visa in supported stablecoins while merchant payout is converted to fiat. These are Visa-described models, not a promise that every stablecoin card or merchant transaction works the same way. See Visa’s 2026 overview of stablecoin-linked card programs.

In that 2026 article, Visa reported approximately $5.2 billion in stablecoin-linked card volume in 2025, equal to 0.04% of Visa’s reported $14.2 trillion global volume. Visa also reported more than 130 programs across more than 50 countries. Those are Visa-reported figures: program counts do not establish that a card is available to every consumer in those countries, and the volume figure is not a measure of all stablecoin payments.
How do direct token payments, linked cards, and conventional payments compare?
| Payment route | What moves over the network | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Direct token payment | The token is transferred over a supported blockchain to a recipient-controlled or provider-supported address. | That the recipient supports the exact token and chain, plus transfer fees, confirmation and receipt timing, redemption options, and recourse. |
| Stablecoin-funded card | A card transaction reaches the merchant over the card network; the card program draws on or converts the customer’s token balance. | Program eligibility, supported assets, conversion rates and timing, card and withdrawal charges, custody, and dispute terms. |
| Conventional card or bank payment | The payment instruction and settlement follow the relevant card or banking arrangements; the buyer need not use a crypto token. | Applicable fees, timing, merchant acceptance, and the protections and dispute process for that payment method and jurisdiction. |
What should you check before paying with a crypto token?
1. Is the token’s value actually stable?
“Stablecoin” describes an intended value behavior, not a guarantee of instant or unconditional cash redemption. Check the token’s design, issuer, reserve and disclosure information, and whether the value can diverge from its reference during market or liquidity stress. Other crypto-assets may fluctuate substantially in price.

2. Does the recipient support the exact token and chain?
Confirm the token and blockchain network on both sides before sending. A wallet, exchange, merchant, or payment provider may support a particular token on one chain but not another. An incompatible asset-and-network combination can prevent funds from reaching the intended destination. Mastercard describes wallet verification of counterparties, assets, and chains as a way to reduce operational risk and failed transfers in its stablecoin payments overview.
3. Will the merchant accept it directly?
Ask whether the merchant accepts the token itself or whether you need a processor, conversion service, or linked card. Visa says most merchants do not accept stablecoins directly; card acceptance may make spending possible without the merchant receiving stablecoins.

4. What is the total cost, not just the blockchain fee?
Include blockchain or network charges, processor fees, conversion spreads, card fees, withdrawal charges, redemption fees, and any off-ramp costs. A low on-chain fee alone does not establish that a token payment costs less overall than a card or bank transfer. Visa cautions that stablecoin cross-border savings depend on network, compliance, and off-ramp conditions; correspondent-bank fees also vary by corridor, provider, and amount. Its cross-border stablecoin discussion describes those qualifications. Visa characterizes traditional correspondent-bank cross-border transactions as typically taking two to five business days; that is not a guarantee for every transfer or proof that a stablecoin alternative will always be faster.
5. When will the value be usable?
Separate blockchain confirmation from final fiat receipt, merchant payout, and redemption into cash. Blockchain transfers may be available around the clock, but compliance checks, provider operating hours, and off-ramp availability can affect when the recipient can actually use the funds. A card-network settlement pilot is not the same thing as universal direct merchant acceptance.

6. Who holds the asset, and what recourse applies?
Find out whether you control the wallet or a provider holds the tokens, what claim you have against the issuer, how to report an error, and whether a payment can be disputed, reversed, or refunded. Also identify the provider’s authorization status and the relevant complaint or supervisory route in your jurisdiction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What protections apply if something goes wrong?
Protection depends on the asset, service provider, and jurisdiction; it is not automatically the same as protection for a traditional payment account. In the EU, the European Supervisory Authorities’ 2025 consumer factsheet on crypto-assets says MiCA covers specified categories, including electronic money tokens and asset-referenced tokens. It warns that crypto-assets or services outside MiCA or other EU financial-services legislation may involve significant risks and limited or no consumer protection. This is EU-specific and does not establish what protection applies elsewhere or to every token or service.

The European Central Bank’s 2022 analysis of stablecoins discussed restrictions and uncertainty around redemption, and noted that certain traditional payment-service consumer protections did not apply to stablecoins at that time. That is historical analysis, not a statement of current law or of every issuer’s present terms. It underscores why buyers should read the actual redemption, refund, and recourse terms rather than infer them from a token’s label.
Before using a particular token or service, verify who may redeem it, at what value and minimum amount, on what schedule, and under what conditions. Check the issuer and provider’s current status, custody terms, supported token-chain combination, total charges and exchange rate, dispute process, and local complaint route. There is no single globally applicable rule or fee schedule for all tokens and providers.
Quick Recap
When might a token or a network matter more to your decision?
- If you are sending value directly: Recipient compatibility, correct chain selection, confirmation, redemption, and recovery options are central.
- If you are spending through a card: The card program’s eligibility, supported assets, conversion mechanics, charges, custody, and dispute terms matter alongside ordinary card acceptance.
- If you are comparing cross-border options: Compare the total cost and the time until the recipient can use the funds, not only the blockchain confirmation time or advertised transfer speed.
