Robert De Niro’s reported real-estate story is centered on New York, but it is not a verified list of homes he owns today. Recent accounts from Architectural Digest (July 23, 2026) and Realtor.com (August 28, 2026) describe an inherited Montauk house, a large upstate estate, former residences, rental episodes, a London apartment reported sold, and an interest in a Manhattan hotel. Those are different kinds of connections, and the reports are not a title search or a complete audit of current holdings.
What the reported portfolio includes
The word “portfolio” can make these properties sound like a single set of current holdings. The reports instead span several decades and several relationships: an inheritance, homes described as shared with Grace Hightower, properties later sold, temporary rentals, and a hotel business interest. The table summarizes what the two outlets reported; it does not independently verify present ownership.
| Property | Reported connection and timing | What the reports describe |
|---|---|---|
| Montauk, New York | Inherited after Robert De Niro Sr.’s death in 1993 | Beach house on roughly 1.5 acres; 2,278-square-foot house and about 740 square feet of decking. Architectural Digest, July 23, 2026. |
| Gardiner, New York | De Niro and Grace Hightower reportedly acquired the property in 1997 | Main house on an original 78-acre parcel; Realtor.com reports a later adjacent 45-acre purchase, for 123 acres in total. Architectural Digest and Realtor.com, 2026. |
| West Village, Manhattan | Reportedly bought in 1975 and sold in 2012; later sale reported in 2021 | Italianate townhouse of about 5,000 square feet. Architectural Digest and Realtor.com, 2026. |
| Southwark, London | Reportedly purchased in 2001; sold before it was listed again in 2018 | Two-bedroom, 2,100-square-foot loft in a converted jam factory. Architectural Digest and Realtor.com, 2026. |
| Central Park West, Manhattan | De Niro and Hightower reportedly bought in 2006; Hightower sold it in March 2025 | Fifth-floor, 5,800-square-foot apartment. Architectural Digest, July 23, 2026. |
| Greenwich Village and Upper West Side, Manhattan | Reported rental episodes | A Greenwich Village duplex penthouse rented for about two years after a 2012 fire, and an Upper West Side apartment rented in 2012. Architectural Digest, July 23, 2026. |
| The Greenwich Hotel, Tribeca | Reported business interest, not simply a private residence | An 88-room hotel with a 6,800-square-foot penthouse suite available to guests. Architectural Digest and Realtor.com, 2026. |
Montauk: an inherited beach house
Architectural Digest reports that De Niro inherited the Montauk property from his father, painter Robert De Niro Sr., after his father died in 1993. The outlet describes a roughly 1.5-acre beachfront parcel, a 2,278-square-foot house and about 740 square feet of decking. Realtor.com says the home was built in 1950 and reports that a 2017 application to demolish and rebuild was denied.
These are reported details, not a confirmation of the house’s present ownership or condition. The accounts establish the inheritance and describe the rebuild application, but do not provide a current title or status check.

Gardiner: the largest reported acreage
The Gardiner, New York, estate is the largest property by acreage described in these accounts. Realtor.com reports that De Niro and Hightower bought it in 1997 for $1.5 million. Architectural Digest describes a 2,222-square-foot main house on 78 acres; Realtor.com says De Niro later acquired an adjacent 45-acre parcel, bringing the reported total to 123 acres.
Buildings and amenities described in coverage
The accounts describe a renovated farmhouse and additional structures, including a 14,000-square-foot recreation barn with a gym, boxing and game rooms, a small film studio and offices. They also mention a tennis court and ski slope. These dimensions and features are outlet-reported, not independently surveyed here.

The reported assessment dispute
Realtor.com recounts a dispute involving the trust used to hold the estate. According to its account, the trust challenged a $6 million assessment; after an inspection, the town reportedly raised the assessment to $9 million. The dispute ended with agreement to the original $6 million valuation and payment of $129,000 in town legal fees. This is a secondary account of a legal matter, not a substitute for the underlying court or assessment records.
Former Manhattan homes and rentals
West Village townhouse
Architectural Digest reports that De Niro bought a roughly 5,000-square-foot Italianate townhouse in 1975 for $190,000 and sold it in 2012 for $9.5 million. Realtor.com reports that it was listed at $22.8 million in 2019 and sold in 2021 for $11.98 million. The later listing and sale occurred after De Niro’s reported sale, so they describe the property’s subsequent history rather than his current ownership.

Architectural Digest dates the house to 1852 and describes it as having three bedrooms. Realtor.com recounts restoration and passive-house features from later listing material; those changes belong to the home’s subsequent history, not necessarily to De Niro’s period there.
Central Park West apartment
Architectural Digest reports that De Niro and Hightower bought a fifth-floor, 5,800-square-foot apartment in 2006 for $20.9 million. The apartment was extensively damaged by a fire in 2012 while the family was away. The outlet reports that Hightower sold the unit in March 2025 for $18 million. It is therefore a former shared residence in this account, not evidence of a present De Niro home.

Temporary rentals after the fire
Architectural Digest says De Niro and Hightower rented a Greenwich Village duplex penthouse for about two years after the Central Park West fire. It reports 11,000 square feet of interior space and 5,200 square feet outdoors, and says the penthouse sold in 2018. The same outlet reports that De Niro rented a 6,000-square-foot, full-floor Upper West Side apartment in 2012 for $125,000 a month; it returned to the market by 2014. These episodes indicate rentals, not ownership.

Architectural Digest reports that De Niro paid £750,000—about $1 million at the time, according to the outlet—for a two-bedroom, 2,100-square-foot loft in a converted jam factory in Southwark in 2001. The apartment was back on the market in 2018 for a reported $2.16 million. Both Architectural Digest and Realtor.com say De Niro had sold it before that listing, but the exact sale date is unclear.

The Greenwich Hotel: a business connection and guest suite
Architectural Digest describes De Niro as a partial owner of The Greenwich Hotel with Ira Drukier. Realtor.com reports that the hotel opened in 2008 in partnership with Drukier, Richard Born and De Niro’s son Raphael, and describes an 88-room property with a restaurant. The accounts do not establish the precise terms or present structure of De Niro’s business interest.
The hotel’s 6,800-square-foot, three-bedroom penthouse is described as a guest suite, not simply as De Niro’s personal home. Architectural Digest says Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt and Japanese architect Tatsuro Miki designed it in 2014. De Niro has been quoted by Architectural Digest, citing The Hollywood Reporter, saying: “Tribeca has its own ambience and feeling,” and that Vervoordt wanted “to respect that and pull in elements of the city. It’s more than interior design: It is art.”
What can—and cannot—be concluded about where he lives
The reports portray a New York-centered history that includes a Montauk inheritance and a substantial Gardiner estate, alongside Manhattan homes that were later sold or rented. They also document a London property reported sold and a hotel interest. They do not establish which properties De Niro owns now, where he currently lives, or a complete list of his real-estate assets. Establishing those points would require current property records and ownership filings; the outlet reports alone do not settle them.
