Neither Solana nor Ethereum is automatically cheaper or safer for launching a token. Solana commonly uses a mint account and token accounts, with fees paid in SOL; Ethereum commonly uses an ERC-20 smart contract, with deployment and transaction fees paid in ETH. Your real cost depends on the token’s design, the transactions required, and network conditions when you submit them. The practical choice is the chain whose token behavior, wallet and app support, authority settings, and security demands fit your launch.
How token issuance differs
Solana: a mint account and token accounts
A common Solana token setup creates a mint account, funds it for rent exemption, initializes its configuration, and assigns mint and freeze authorities. Solana’s network-writing example shows these steps. The token program also supports authority operations such as minting, freezing, delegation, and changing or revoking authority; those choices affect who can issue more units or restrict token-account activity. See the SPL Token basics.
Solana’s Token-2022 program offers extensions that can change token behavior. For example, its transfer-fee extension withholds a configured portion of transfers and gives designated authorities the ability to withdraw withheld fees. A launch should identify the token program and any extensions, then explain in plain language which authorities remain active, are delegated, or are revoked.
Ethereum: an ERC-20 smart contract
An ERC-20 token is a smart contract implementing a standard interface for fungible tokens. Deploying the contract stores compiled code on Ethereum and costs gas paid in ETH. ERC-20 compatibility helps applications recognize standard token functions, but it does not ensure every receiving contract can safely handle tokens sent to it. The ERC-20 standard describes the interface, while Ethereum’s deployment guide explains contract deployment.

How fees work—and why the examples do not settle which is cheaper
| Network | Fee unit and mechanism | Documented figure | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solana | Fees are paid in SOL. A transaction has a base fee and may include a prioritization fee based on compute-unit price and compute-unit limit. | Solana Documentation states a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature in its fee documentation, accessed in 2026. | This is not the full cost of a token launch. Creating token accounts can require funding their rent-exempt balance, and a launch may involve multiple instructions. |
| Ethereum | Fees are paid in ETH. The total depends on gas used, the base fee, and any priority fee. | ethereum.org gives 21,000 gas as an example for a simple ETH transfer in its gas documentation, accessed in 2026. | This is not a token-contract deployment estimate. Deploying a contract takes more gas than a simple transfer, and fees vary with transaction details and network demand. |
Solana’s fee documentation explains its base and prioritization fees. Ethereum’s gas and fees overview explains gas and the ETH fee calculation. The figures above measure different things: a Solana base fee per signature versus gas units for an Ethereum transfer. They are not equivalent token-launch bills, and neither supports a claim that one chain is always cheaper.
To compare a specific launch, define the same token behavior and count all required transactions, then check the networks’ conditions when you plan to submit them. A valid comparison also needs to include Solana token-account funding where applicable and Ethereum contract deployment; the cited figures alone do not establish a synchronized dollar cost.

What to compare before choosing a network
Evaluate the complete launch workflow rather than comparing a headline fee figure.
- Required token behavior: Decide what the token must do, including whether it needs any specialized features or extensions.
- Authority and permissions: Identify who can mint, freeze, delegate, withdraw withheld fees, or exercise contract-owner or role permissions. Explain the implications to users.
- Wallet and application support: Confirm that the wallets, services, and applications your team and intended users need support the specific token and workflow.
- Transaction costs: Estimate the complete set of launch transactions under network conditions at the time you expect to submit them, not from unlike examples.
- Operational capacity: Consider whether your team can protect signing keys, review transactions, and obtain an appropriate review of token code and permissions.
The available documentation establishes the mechanics, not a universally superior network, a current dollar cost for equivalent token launches, or a tested wallet recommendation.

Wallets protect a signing process, not a token’s legitimacy
A wallet interface is not the same thing as key custody or a signing policy. Before approving a transaction, verify the network, recipient address and address type, token mint or contract address, requested permissions, and the transaction details. An incorrect address or misunderstood approval can put assets at risk.
Solana’s production-readiness guidance advises against exposing private keys in frontend code, recommends separating hot operational wallets from cold treasury wallets, and calls for encrypted backups in multiple secure locations. It lists hardware wallets as one possible signing option among other key-management approaches. A hardware wallet can support a more controlled key workflow, but the cited guidance does not establish that any particular device works with every chain, application, or launch setup. A signing device also cannot determine whether token code is safe or a token is legitimate.

Risks that can affect a launch and its users
Permissions, code, and hard-to-reverse mistakes
On Solana, mint, freeze, delegation, and extension authorities shape token behavior and trust. Disclose which permissions are retained, delegated, or revoked, and check the actual mint configuration rather than describing a Token-2022 token as simply “standard.”
On Ethereum, inspect contract permissions such as roles or ownership that can mint, pause, upgrade, or move assets. Ethereum’s smart-contract security guidance notes that deployed code can be difficult to patch and stolen contract assets difficult to recover. Permissions are therefore a material trust assumption, not an administrative detail.

Failed transactions and tokens sent to the wrong recipient
An Ethereum transaction that runs out of gas during execution reverts its state changes but still consumes gas for the work performed, according to the gas documentation. A failed interaction is not necessarily free.
ERC-20’s ordinary transfer mechanism does not require a receiving-contract callback. If tokens are sent to a contract that does not know how to handle them, they can become stuck or be lost. Check whether the intended recipient can handle the token before sending it.
Solana’s production guidance warns that sending native SOL to a mint or program address can cause irreversible loss and recommends classifying recipients before signing. More broadly, losing access to a private key can permanently remove access to assets; protect backups and verify addresses before sending.
Testing is useful, but not proof of production readiness
Solana documentation distinguishes devnet, where test SOL is free and competition is lower, from mainnet, where transactions involve real fees and priority-fee considerations. A devnet rehearsal can help validate a workflow, but it is not an audit and does not prove that a production launch is ready. Review the final configuration, permissions, and code for the actual launch.
