Blue Yonder brought AI and machine-learning technology for retail and supply-chain operations; the acquisition price was not disclosed in the official announcements cited here. JDA later adopted the Blue Yonder name, and Panasonic’s subsequent investments were separate transactions.
What did JDA Software acquire?
Blue Yonder was a Karlsruhe, Germany-based provider of artificial intelligence and machine-learning solutions for retail and supply-chain operations. JDA described the company as having a large data-science organization and named WM Morrisons and OTTO among its customers. The strategic value was its technology and expertise, not simply a change in ownership.
JDA said the acquisition would help advance its autonomous-supply-chain strategy across planning, execution, labor management, and omnichannel delivery. At completion, the companies presented an end-to-end supply-chain offering combining AI and machine learning for planning, analysis, execution, and delivery through JDA’s Luminate cognitive SaaS platform. JDA’s acquisition announcement and completion announcement describe those aims.
When was the acquisition announced and completed?
JDA’s announcement record includes July 2 and September 12, 2018; its release said the definitive agreement remained subject to competition-agency approval. JDA announced completion on September 12, 2018. The company’s later rebrand announcement said it had acquired Blue Yonder in August 2018, a different date reference from the completion release. These company statements establish the 2018 transaction, but the price is not stated in the official materials cited here.

Why did JDA change its name to Blue Yonder?
On February 11, 2020, JDA announced that its corporate name would become Blue Yonder, effective immediately. It said the new name aligned the company’s brand with its cloud transformation and product roadmap. The change was a rebrand of JDA, the buyer—not a new acquisition of Blue Yonder in 2020. The rebrand announcement explained the decision.
How did Panasonic become Blue Yonder’s owner?
Panasonic entered through later, distinct steps. In May 2020 it announced a 20% strategic equity investment in Blue Yonder at an enterprise value of USD 5.5 billion, building on an existing strategic relationship and a Japan joint venture. In April 2021, Panasonic announced an agreement to buy the remaining 80%. It stated a USD 5.6 billion price for those shares, USD 7.1 billion of additional investment including repayment of outstanding debt, and an implied company valuation of USD 8.5 billion. The 2021 figures describe Panasonic’s transaction, not JDA’s 2018 purchase price. See Panasonic’s 2020 investment announcement and its 2021 takeover announcement.
