AWS plans to invest £8 billion in UK data centres and related digital and AI infrastructure from 2024 to 2028. The company says the spending will build, operate and maintain facilities to meet rising demand for cloud and AI services. AWS estimates the programme will contribute £14 billion to UK GDP through 2028 and support more than 14,000 full-time-equivalent jobs annually at local businesses.

What will AWS spend the £8 billion on?

The commitment is for building, operating and maintaining UK data centres and related digital and AI infrastructure. AWS said the investment is intended to meet the growing needs of its customers and partners and support the UK’s digital economy. HM Treasury confirmed the announcement on 11 September 2024.

Data centres provide the physical computing and networking capacity behind cloud services; this is an infrastructure investment, not a new retail data-centre product. Amazon links the spending to increased demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence and generative AI, as well as the UK’s ambition to expand AI computing capacity. Amazon’s announcement describes the wider role of cloud and AI infrastructure in its UK plans.

What are the estimated economic effects?

AWS estimates that its investment will contribute £14 billion to total UK GDP through 2028. It also estimates more than 14,000 full-time-equivalent jobs annually at local businesses in the data-centre supply chain and wider local economy. HM Treasury describes the employment estimate as around 14,000 jobs per year, including construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications and related work.

These are estimates published by AWS and repeated by the government, not independently audited measurements of results. The annual jobs figure covers work at local businesses and across the wider local economy; it should not be read as a count of permanent AWS employee positions.

Where will the new data centres be built?

AWS has not published a complete list of new construction sites or a facility-by-facility breakdown of the £8 billion in the cited announcements. Its existing UK cloud region launched in December 2016 and has three Availability Zones, alongside other network locations. An existing region description does not identify where this new investment will be spent. AWS’s global infrastructure page describes its regions and Availability Zones.

Is the £8 billion included in Amazon’s £40 billion UK investment?

Yes. On 24 June 2025, Amazon announced a broader plan to invest £40 billion in the UK over 2025–2027. That package spans fulfilment and delivery infrastructure, corporate facilities, transport, skills, and cloud and AI infrastructure. Amazon says the AWS data-centre investment is the £8 billion commitment previously announced for 2024–2028 and is included within the wider corporate commitment. The two figures therefore should not be added together as if they were separate investments.

What the announcement does—and does not—tell UK readers

The announced scale and period indicate a major planned expansion of infrastructure supporting cloud and AI services, but the published figures alone do not show how much capacity will be added at each site or when individual facilities will open. The announcements also do not provide a project-level spending schedule or independently verified economic outcomes. Those details would be needed to assess local effects beyond the company’s national estimates.
