AT&T says T-Mobile’s Easy Switch tool used customers’ AT&T logins to retrieve information from AT&T’s protected systems without permission. A federal judge temporarily barred the original access method on December 18, 2025, but did not issue a final ruling that T-Mobile was liable. The dispute concerns alleged access to AT&T systems through a switching tool—not a conventional breach of T-Mobile’s network.
What T-Mobile’s Easy Switch was designed to do
T-Mobile announced Switching Made Easy on November 20, 2025, describing Easy Switch as a beta feature in its T-Life app for people considering a move from AT&T or Verizon. It was intended to review a customer’s current lines, devices and plan, recommend T-Mobile plans, and estimate potential savings. T-Mobile described the experience as a 15-minute way to compare and switch. T-Mobile’s announcement explains the feature’s stated purpose.
In the original flow, customers selected their current carrier and logged in through T-Life. The app then presented plan and value comparisons, after which a customer could proceed with switching and number porting. T-Mobile’s switching instructions said customers needed their AT&T or Verizon login information. The advertised experience also let customers defer a new-phone decision for up to 90 days.
What AT&T says the tool accessed
AT&T’s November 26, 2025 complaint alleges that T-Mobile’s automated software entered password-protected AT&T systems using customer-supplied credentials and retrieved more than 100 fields of information for each affected account. The alleged information included identity and account details, plan and line information, device and equipment data, and billing or other account information. The complaint and the court’s preliminary findings describe the scope as more than information necessarily visible on a regular wireless bill. AT&T’s complaint sets out the allegations.

- Triple rear camera system: 50MP main camera, 5MP ultra-wide, and 2MP depth sensor for capturing sharp photos and HD videos in any light.
That account is AT&T’s allegation, considered in a preliminary court proceeding; it is not a final finding of what information was retrieved, retained, or used for every customer. AT&T asked the court for an inventory of data allegedly obtained, identification of affected accounts, and deletion of copies. Those were requested remedies, not proof that every category AT&T sought to investigate was collected.
Why AT&T says the access was unlawful
AT&T’s claims include alleged unauthorized access under the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, state computer-access laws including Texas and Georgia statutes, breach of AT&T website terms, and interference with customer contracts and business relationships. The complaint frames the use of information held in AT&T’s systems as unauthorized. These are AT&T’s legal theories, not a final court determination.

Customer consent and system authorization are different questions
AT&T argued that a customer’s decision to provide credentials did not itself give T-Mobile permission to access AT&T’s protected systems. In AT&T’s view, the customer could authorize help with switching, but could not grant permission on AT&T’s behalf for automated access to its infrastructure; AT&T also said it had objected to the tool. The relevant questions include what the customer authorized, what access AT&T permitted, and whether the method complied with AT&T’s terms. The parties’ positions and the court’s preliminary assessment do not settle that issue for all circumstances. See AT&T’s brief supporting its request for a temporary restraining order.
Scraping is not the same thing as an official API
AT&T’s filings describe an automated scraper or process accessing protected systems; the available court materials do not establish that the tool used an official AT&T API. In general, an API is a documented interface intended to let authorized software exchange data, while scraping automates retrieval from web pages or application responses. Whether a particular method is permitted depends on factors such as authorization, authentication barriers, terms, technical circumvention, data involved and applicable law. Calling a process automated does not, by itself, resolve its legality.

What the judge ordered—and what the order did not decide
On December 18, 2025, a federal judge in the Northern District of Texas issued a temporary restraining order. The order barred T-Mobile and associated parties from implementing the original Switching Made Easy/Easy Switch feature, or a substantially similar feature, insofar as it accessed and obtained data from AT&T’s protected computer systems without permission. The court found AT&T likely to succeed on at least some claims for purposes of temporary relief. The case docket records the proceeding.
A temporary restraining order is preliminary relief, not a final judgment after the parties have completed litigation. It does not establish final liability, damages, the customer-by-customer scope of any access, or the ultimate disposition of each legal claim. Nor does it amount to a blanket ban on T-Life, every carrier-switching tool, or customer data portability.

The latest docket events summarized above show litigation activity in 2026, not a final ruling on the merits.
Was this a data breach?
The allegations concern a dispute over access to AT&T systems and information through T-Mobile’s switching tool. They do not describe attackers breaking into T-Mobile’s own network, and the available record does not establish that every AT&T customer was affected. It is more precise to describe this as an alleged unauthorized-access and data-scraping dispute than as a T-Mobile data breach. The central issues include authorization, the access method, the scope and handling of information, and whether any information was retained or used.
What AT&T customers who used the original login flow can do
If you entered AT&T credentials into the original login-based Easy Switch flow, the following are prudent precautions. They are not court-ordered requirements, and the case record does not establish that every user experienced misuse.
- Change your AT&T password. If you reused it on another service, change it there too.
- Enable multifactor authentication where available, then review account activity, contact details, account owners and authorized users for changes you do not recognize.
- Check your account PIN and port-out protections, if available. Request a new transfer PIN if one was generated or may have been exposed.
- Contact AT&T through an official support channel if you find unexplained changes. Be alert for phishing messages posing as AT&T or T-Mobile, and do not give account details to unsolicited callers, texts or emails.
A password change can help secure future access, but it cannot undo information that may already have been transmitted. The available record does not establish whether any particular customer’s data was retained or misused.
Quick Recap
What to weigh before using an account-comparison tool
- Credential handling: Find out whether login happens on the carrier’s own authorization page or inside a third-party app, whether credentials or access tokens are retained, and whether multifactor authentication works.
- Data minimization and retention: Check what information is requested, how long retrieved data or uploaded documents are kept, and whether service providers receive it.
- Comparison accuracy: Treat estimated savings as an estimate. Grandfathered features, discounts, taxes, fees, international-use terms, device installments and promotional conditions can change the actual cost.
- Account and porting readiness: A primary account holder may be needed, and business, prepaid, family, suspended or legacy accounts may not follow the same flow. Keep account numbers and transfer PINs within the carrier’s official switching process.
- Documents: A PDF upload can reveal more than the particular plan detail needed for a comparison, so review what a bill contains before sharing it.
