Yes—you can start learning software engineering with free Google resources, though no five-course sequence can guarantee a job or replace practice building projects. A useful route is to learn HTML, CSS and JavaScript on web.dev, then branch into Android development with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose or explore cloud tools through Google Cloud Skills Boost.

Which free Google courses should you take?

These resources cover different parts of software work rather than offering five versions of the same course. The web.dev lessons build web foundations; Android Basics with Compose teaches mobile-app development; Google Cloud learning resources introduce cloud concepts and hands-on labs.

Resource Best suited to What you learn Access and time
Learn HTML First step in web development Page structure and semantics Self-paced web.dev learning resource; no physical product required. [c003]
Learn CSS Styling and layout Presentation, layout and accessibility concepts Self-paced web.dev learning resource. [c003]
Learn JavaScript Adding behavior to web pages JavaScript basics and interactivity Self-paced web.dev learning resource. [c003]
Android Basics with Compose Building Android apps Kotlin, Compose UI, Android Studio, architecture, navigation, adaptive layouts and testing Self-paced beginner course. Its first unit lists three pathways totaling 10 hours; a computer capable of running Android Studio is required. [c001][c002]
Google Cloud Skills / Skills Boost Cloud and deployment exposure Cloud concepts, learning paths, hands-on labs and skill badges The Innovator plan lists 35 free credits per month; access to the wider catalog varies by plan. [c004][c005]

How should you approach the courses?

The order below is a practical recommendation based on the subjects and prerequisites described on the course pages, not a sequence prescribed by Google.

  1. Learn HTML. Use it to understand how content and page structure are expressed on the web.
  2. Learn CSS. Apply styles and layout to the pages you create.
  3. Learn JavaScript. Add browser-based behavior and interaction.
  4. Build a small site. Combine the three foundations in a project, then improve it as you learn.
  5. Choose a next direction. If you want to make mobile apps, start Android Basics with Compose. If you have a project to deploy or connect to a cloud service, add relevant Google Cloud labs.

Having a project gives you a concrete reason to explore cloud services; cloud material is more useful when you can connect it to something you have built.

What do the courses teach—and what do they leave open?

HTML, CSS and JavaScript for web foundations

HTML provides structure and semantics. CSS handles presentation, including styling and layout topics. JavaScript adds behavior; web.dev describes its course as an in-depth introduction to the language’s basics. Together, they give you a starting point for building interactive websites, but completing lessons is not the same as demonstrating engineering ability. Practice by making and revising projects.

Android Basics with Compose for mobile development

Android Basics with Compose is a self-paced Google course for learning to build Android apps with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose. Android Developers says no programming experience is required. The first unit is listed as three pathways totaling 10 hours; that figure applies to the first unit, not necessarily the full course. You will need a computer capable of running Android Studio. [c001][c002]

Google Cloud Skills and Skills Boost for cloud exposure

Google Cloud’s learning resources include modular courses, learning paths, hands-on labs and skill badges. The no-cost Innovator plan lists 35 free credits each month, while broader catalog access can require a paid subscription. Check the current plan details before starting, since credit amounts and access terms can change. [c004][c005]

Are Google Career Certificates free?

They are separate from the five resources above. Google Career Certificates are hosted on Coursera and use a subscription model, so they should not be treated as free courses. Grow with Google says certificates commonly take three to six months; its U.S. and Canada page lists a price of $49 per month after a seven-day trial. Financial aid may be available on eligible course pages. Confirm current pricing and eligibility on the relevant page before enrolling. [c007]

What can you study after the five resources?

If you already have basic IT knowledge and want to move toward automation or operations work, Google IT Automation with Python is a possible next step. Google lists Python, Git, GitHub, troubleshooting, testing in Python, developer-environment setup and IT automation among its skills. The advanced certificate has a one-to-two-month completion estimate, but it uses a subscription model rather than being one of the free options in this list. [c006]
