Cisco says its fiscal 2026 restructuring will reduce its overall workforce by fewer than 4,000 jobs, or less than 5% of its employee base. The company says it is redirecting investment toward silicon, optics, security and artificial intelligence.
Why is Cisco restructuring?
Cisco says the changes are intended to make room for investment in silicon, optics, security and AI. In its Our Path Forward announcement, the company also described the plan as preparation for AI-era growth and changes in how work is done. Its May 13, 2026 SEC restructuring filing likewise identifies those investment areas as the rationale.
The announcement is not evidence that Cisco is cutting jobs because AI orders are falling. A Reuters-syndicated report described the restructuring as AI-focused while reporting that orders were surging. Cisco’s stated rationale is to shift investment and adapt its operations; the disclosures do not establish that AI automation is the reason particular employees are affected.
What is the estimated cost and timeline?
Cisco’s May 13, 2026 filing estimated up to $1 billion in pre-tax restructuring charges, covering severance, other one-time termination benefits and related costs. At that point, the company expected approximately $450 million of the charges in fiscal Q4 2026 and the balance in fiscal 2027.

Cisco’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K later reported that it incurred $511 million in charges during fiscal 2026 and expected the plan to be substantially completed by the end of fiscal 2027. These are company estimates and reported charges, not a guarantee of the final total or a schedule for each employee’s departure. Cisco has not publicly provided a complete role-by-role or location-by-location list in the disclosures cited here. The company’s Form 10-K reports approximately 82,400 employees as of July 25, 2026, but that company-wide figure does not identify which teams or offices are affected. Without a published breakdown, employees cannot infer their individual status from the overall workforce figure.
