Crypto staking APY is an annualized estimate of token rewards, not a guaranteed return. Your actual result can be lower because the protocol’s rewards change, commissions are deducted, validators may miss rewards or incur penalties, and the token’s market price can fall. Withdrawal rules can also keep you from moving or selling your stake when you want.
What staking rewards pay for
In a proof-of-stake network, holders commit tokens to help support the network’s validation process. They may stake directly or use a provider that stakes on their behalf. Under a network’s rules, rewards can include newly created tokens and a share of transaction fees, as described by the SEC Division of Corporation Finance staff. The precise reward design is specific to each protocol; there is no single formula that applies to every chain.
A network’s reward rate is not a fixed promise. It depends on protocol rules and network conditions, and the amount passed through to an individual staker can also depend on the validator or service used.
What an advertised APY means
APY expresses a rate on an annualized basis and may assume that rewards are reinvested. Treat it as an estimate whose meaning depends on the provider’s calculation: check the period used, whether the rate is gross or net of commission, and whether compounding is assumed. It is not a guarantee that you will earn that percentage over the coming year.

Provider disclosures illustrate why headline rates are not directly comparable. Coinbase says its displayed APY is based on actual staking rewards over a recent trailing period after its commission. Kraken says its displayed estimates use average rewards accrued during a past period and may be shown before or after applicable commission, depending on the arrangement. These are provider-specific descriptions, not a universal industry convention. Rates can change, and future rewards may be lower or zero.
What can reduce your staking return
Protocol rewards change
Reward levels depend on the chain’s rules and conditions, so an APY observed in one period may not continue. As an example of a protocol schedule—not a staker’s promised APY—Solana’s official staking page describes inflation beginning at 8% annually, decreasing 15% year over year toward a 1.5% long-term rate. Those schedule parameters should not be read as the return an individual will receive.

Commissions take a share
A provider or validator may keep a portion of staking rewards. If a displayed APY is before that commission, the amount credited to you will be lower than the headline rate; if it is already net, subtracting the fee again would misstate the result. Find out which applies to the particular service and arrangement.
Validator performance and protocol penalties matter
Validator downtime can mean expected rewards are missed or forfeited. Some protocols can also slash stake for protocol-defined misbehavior. The rules and consequences differ by chain, so check the network’s documentation and the validator or provider’s terms rather than assuming every staking arrangement has the same penalty.

Token price can outweigh token rewards in dollar terms
Staking rewards are denominated in tokens. You could receive more tokens while their market price falls, leaving the fiat value of both your principal and accumulated rewards lower. If assets are locked or in an unbonding queue, a delay before withdrawal may leave you exposed to price movements during that period.
Exit rules can limit access to funds
Unbonding periods, queues, and lockups affect when tokens can be transferred or sold. The SEC staff noted on May 29, 2025, that “The minimum staking or lock-up period varies among PoS protocols.” Provider terms may add their own conditions. There is no universal exit time; check the applicable network and service terms before staking.

Liquid staking adds another risk layer
Liquid-staking services may issue a receipt token representing a staked position. That receipt does not remove the underlying token or network risks and introduces additional smart-contract and redemption risks. Consider both layers when assessing what you may be able to redeem and when.

- Protocol: How the network generates rewards and how its rules or conditions can change them.
- Rate basis: Whether the quoted figure is gross or net, what past period it reflects, and whether it assumes reinvestment.
- Fees: Provider and validator commissions, and whether the displayed estimate already includes them.
- Performance and penalties: Validator reliability and the chain’s rules for missed rewards or slashing.
- Custody and structure: Whether you stake directly, through a custodial provider, or through a smart-contract-based liquid-staking service.
- Access to funds: Unbonding, queue, lockup, and redemption terms that determine when you can move or sell assets.
What the APY does—and does not—tell you
APY can help estimate token accumulation if its assumptions match your arrangement, but it cannot by itself predict your realized return in dollars. To understand the offer, read the rate methodology alongside fees, validator and protocol risks, and exit conditions. Product availability and terms vary by location and can change.
