To change the order shoppers see in a Shopify collection, open Products > Collections, select the collection, set its sort order to Manual or Manually, rearrange the products, and save. The change applies to that collection—not to every product list, search result, or homepage section in your store.
First, identify where you want the order to change
Shopify does not have one universal product order for the whole store. The right control depends on which page or component displays the products.
- A collection page: Change the sort order in that collection’s admin settings.
- The catalog page: The standard catalog URL is
/collections/all. Its ordering can be controlled through the All collection, if your store uses the standard setup. - The homepage: A section such as Featured collection may display a collection’s order. A section that uses individually selected products may have its own order in the theme editor.
- Search results or recommendations: Collection ordering does not necessarily control these. Check the relevant search, recommendation, or app settings.
- The Products list in admin: Its sort controls help you find and manage products; they do not set storefront merchandising order.
Shopify distinguishes the product sequence in a collection from the collection’s visual layout. For the current collection controls, see Shopify’s collection layout and sorting guide.
Manually reorder products in a collection
- In Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections.
- Open the collection you want shoppers to see in a different order.
- In the Products section, open the Sort menu and choose Manual or Manually. Labels can vary with the admin interface.
- Drag products by their reorder handles into the sequence you want. For a large collection, use the move controls instead of dragging products a long distance.
- Click Save, then open the collection on your storefront and check the result.
Shopify’s collection Products list is paginated, with 60 products per page in the documented admin view. Search for a product or use a position control if the item is not visible on the current page; do not assume the full collection is one unlimited drag-and-drop list.

Select the product, choose Top or Bottom in the move control, and click Move. You can also drag it to the desired end of the list.
Move a product to an exact position
Select the product, choose the numbered-position option, enter its desired place in the collection, and click Move. The number refers to its place in that collection’s list, not its position throughout the store.

Change the order on the /collections/all catalog page
Many Shopify stores use /collections/all as their catalog page. Shopify’s catalog instructions describe creating or editing an All collection, keeping its handle as all, choosing manual sorting, and reordering its products. See Shopify’s instructions for changing the catalog page.
This applies when the storefront actually uses that standard catalog collection. If your store has a custom catalog page, theme template, or app-driven product grid, inspect that setup before changing a collection and expecting the catalog to follow it.

Change product order on the homepage
- In Online Store > Themes > Customize, inspect the homepage section that displays the products.
- Identify whether it draws from a collection or uses a product picker with individually selected products.
- If it uses a collection, open that collection under Products > Collections and set its sort to manual before reordering.
- If it uses individually selected products, adjust the selection or order in the homepage section itself.
- Save the relevant changes and check the published homepage.
A homepage section can show only part of a collection, so confirm that the product appears within the section’s displayed selection.
Choose a sorting method
When a collection is not set to manual, Shopify provides automatic sorting choices. The available labels may differ by admin version; current Shopify documentation includes Relevancy, while its older guide uses a different list of options.

| Sort method | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manual / Manually | You want an editorial sequence for a campaign, launch, or curated collection. | You must maintain the order as products are added or removed. |
| Best selling | You want sales performance to determine placement. | You have less direct control over the exact sequence. |
| Newest / oldest | You want new arrivals first or want products ordered by age. | The sequence follows product dates rather than your merchandising priorities. |
| Price, ascending / descending | Price-led browsing is useful for the collection. | Variant pricing can make the displayed sequence less intuitive. |
| Product title, ascending / descending | A predictable alphabetical list is appropriate. | It does not account for sales, inventory, or campaign priorities. |
| Relevancy | You prefer Shopify’s relevance-based ordering where it is available. | You have less control over the precise order than with manual sorting. |
See Shopify’s current collection sorting documentation for the available controls. An older version of that guide is also available at Shopify’s earlier collection layout guide.

Why the storefront order did not change
- You sorted the admin Products list. That changes how products are displayed to you in the admin, not how they appear in the online store. Shopify’s product-list guide explains the distinction: searching and filtering products in admin.
- The collection is not set to manual. Confirm the collection’s Sort setting before trying to drag products.
- You changed the wrong collection. Check the URL linked in navigation, the collection chosen in the homepage section, and the collection page you are viewing.
- The homepage uses a product picker. Its selected-product order may be managed in the theme editor, not in collection sorting.
- The shopper selected another storefront sort option. A collection page sort menu may display price, newest, best-selling, or another sequence instead of the manual order.
- An app is controlling merchandising. Collection sorting, personalization, search, or recommendation apps may apply their own ordering rules.
- The product is not eligible to appear. Check whether it is included in the collection and published to the relevant sales channel; market availability, theme or app rules, and storefront filters can also affect visibility.
- The collection membership changed. A smart collection includes products that meet its conditions. Membership and display order are separate: a product can qualify or stop qualifying as conditions change. Shopify discusses collection setup in its store setup guide. For tightly controlled campaign membership, a manual collection is often easier to maintain.
- You are seeing a stale page. Save the collection, check its actual storefront URL, hard-refresh, or open it in a private window. Compare mobile and desktop and verify the storefront sort control.
When built-in sorting is enough—and when to consider an app
Shopify’s built-in manual order is usually sufficient for a one-time change or a small number of curated collections. It is free as an admin capability and gives you direct control, but maintaining many collections by hand takes time. It does not automatically rank by inventory, margin, conversion rate, or sell-through.
Consider a collection-merchandising app when you need recurring automation, out-of-stock products pushed down, products pinned or grouped, custom rules, metafield sorting, or analytics. Apps add cost, permissions, and a dependency that can interact with themes or other merchandising tools. Compare current capabilities and pricing on each official listing before installing; the figures below were listed on August 18, 2026 and may change.
| Option | Listed fit and features | Price information listed August 18, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify built-in sorting | Manual ordering in a collection; suited to occasional or limited manual merchandising. | No separate sorting-app purchase required. |
| Sort’d – Prime Collection Sort | Drag-and-drop and automated sorting, including out-of-stock handling; paid plans list metafield sorting and additional features. | Free plan; Premium listed at $29/month with a 7-day trial. Premium Pro listed at $70/month up to 1 million monthly sessions, with higher tiers at $200 and $350 and custom pricing above those tiers. |
| KX AI Collections / Collection Sort & Category | Rules using sales, margin, inventory, and conversion data; pinning, grouping, hiding, personalization, and higher-plan analytics and testing. | Starter listed at $19/month or $182.40/year; Advanced at $79/month or $758.40/year; Superior at $299/month or $2,870.40/year. A 14-day trial was listed. |
| Collection Sorting Master | Manual and rule-based sorting, pinning, inventory-aware ordering, analytics, and CSV and bulk tools listed. | Starter listed at $5.99/month or $65/year. |
These are listing details, not performance guarantees. A store that only needs to move a few products should start with Shopify’s native controls; evaluate an app against the specific automation or scale problem it solves.
For developers: programmatic reordering
Shopify’s Admin GraphQL API includes the collectionReorderProducts mutation. The collection must use manual sorting, and Shopify’s documentation says to send the products that moved rather than the entire product list. The cited page is for API version 2026-10; developers should choose an API version supported by their app instead of assuming that version is appropriate. See the mutation documentation.
