Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Stop before sending money, connecting a wallet, or signing a transaction if someone is rushing you, promising guaranteed returns, asking for secrecy, or requesting credentials or extra payments. Crypto transfers are often difficult or impossible to reverse once confirmed, and a polished website or visible account balance does not prove that a platform is genuine. The FTC explains the recovery limits in its guide to cryptocurrency scams.
The fastest red-flag test
Pause if any of these are true. Uncertainty is a good enough reason not to proceed.
- Someone promises guaranteed, risk-free, or unusually high returns.
- You are being rushed, told to keep the opportunity secret, or discouraged from getting independent advice.
- A stranger or new online contact introduced the investment.
- Someone asks you to share a seed phrase, private key, password, one-time code, or remote access to your device.
- You are told to move funds to a “safe” wallet, connect through an unsolicited link, or approve a transaction you do not understand.
- A platform demands more money before it will release a withdrawal.
One warning sign does not prove fraud, but a combination is reason to stop and verify independently.
Investment and trading red flags
Guaranteed returns and secret systems
No one can guarantee crypto investment profits without risk. Treat claims of fixed, unusually high returns, rapid doubling, or impossible losses with suspicion—especially when explained by a supposedly secret algorithm, AI trading bot, mining operation, or proprietary system. The SEC and CFTC have warned about fake digital-asset trading sites advertising purported returns of 20%–50% with little or no risk in their digital-fraud advisory.

Pressure, secrecy, and personal appeals
Countdowns, “last chance” allocations, private-sale claims, and pressure to deposit more for a higher tier are designed to shorten the time you have to check facts. Be particularly cautious when an online romantic interest, new friend, group-chat contact, or supposed family emergency is used to steer you toward an investment. Relationship-investment scams often build trust before introducing a fake platform, as described in this joint regulator and industry warning.
The FTC advises consumers to search the company or person alongside the cryptocurrency name and terms such as “review,” “scam,” or “complaint” before investing: investment scam guidance.

Fake profits and withdrawal barriers
A dashboard balance is only a display; it does not establish that assets exist or can be withdrawn. The FBI describes fake crypto platforms that show fabricated gains and use convincing support portals. If a site blocks a withdrawal and demands “tax,” “verification,” “release,” “gas,” or anti-money-laundering fees paid separately, do not send more money. Such additional-payment demands are a warning in the CFTC advisory.
A small early withdrawal does not establish legitimacy; a scammer may allow one to build confidence before seeking a larger deposit.

Fake exchanges, wallets, apps, and support
Impersonation and suspicious links
Scammers impersonate exchanges, wallet providers, banks, government agencies, law enforcement, tax authorities, and crypto projects. A “support” agent who contacts you first is not verified merely because the profile looks official. Look closely at the domain for misspellings, extra words, swapped characters, or an unexpected ending. Avoid links and QR codes in unsolicited messages, advertisements, search results, or social posts; navigate independently to the service’s known official site or app.
Common lures include fake exchange login pages, account-freeze notices, wallet-update alerts, airdrops that require a wallet connection, NFT offers, browser extensions, sponsored search results, and fake legal or tax demands. Deepfake videos, celebrity endorsements, verified-looking accounts, professional design, and polished language are not proof of safety. The FBI’s cryptocurrency investment fraud guidance describes spoofed domains and fake platforms that can look credible.
Verify the person and platform separately
A real company can be impersonated; a real employee account can be compromised; and a legitimate exchange account can be used as a stepping stone to send funds to a fraudulent platform. Verify the company through a self-started visit to its official domain, then confirm any contact or offer through a separately located support channel. Do not rely on a phone number, email, or app link supplied by the person asking for money.

Wallet, seed-phrase, and transaction red flags
Protect the recovery phrase and private key
A seed phrase (also called a recovery phrase) is a master backup that may let someone recreate and control a wallet. Treat any request from another person or website for the phrase, private key, wallet PIN, password, or one-time authentication code as an immediate stop signal. Restore a wallet only when you initiate the process in the wallet’s documented recovery flow; never enter the phrase into a message, form, website, cloud note, screenshot, or unverified app. A hardware wallet cannot protect funds if its recovery phrase has already been exposed.

Check every address, network, and approval
Before sending funds, verify the recipient address and blockchain network on a trusted device. Do not rely only on the first and last characters: address-poisoning attacks place lookalike addresses in transaction history. When practical, send a small test transaction, while remembering that a successful test proves only that the transfer worked—not that the recipient or investment is trustworthy. A QR code is simply another way to supply an address or link; verify its destination independently.

Before connecting to a decentralized app or signing a smart-contract transaction, check the network, asset, amount, recipient, and requested permissions. Be cautious of unlimited token approvals and reject unexplained requests. Where supported, verify the transaction details on the hardware signer’s screen. A successful wallet connection alone does not mean the site is safe.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify a crypto opportunity
- Start from a clean route. Do not use the message, ad, QR code, or social profile that brought you the offer. Type a known address yourself or locate the official site through an independent source.
- Inspect the identity. Check the domain character by character. Confirm the company’s legal identity, physical presence, terms, privacy policy, and support channel through sources independent of the pitch.
- Search for problems. Search the company, individual, token, and platform name with “review,” “scam,” “fraud,” “complaint,” and “withdrawal problem.” Look for consistent independent information, not testimonials hosted on the platform.
- Check relevant official records. Use the applicable U.S. regulator or registration database for the service and activity involved. Regulatory status depends on the asset, activity, and jurisdiction; the SEC’s March 17, 2026 crypto-asset interpretation addresses how federal securities laws apply to certain crypto assets and transactions. No single lookup settles every question.
- Separate existence from safety. A real token, incorporated company, registered entity, or successful test withdrawal does not establish value, liquidity, solvency, legal status, or suitability. Registration is not a guarantee against loss, and absence from one database alone does not prove fraud.
- Do not test with money you need. If you cannot independently explain how the investment works, how withdrawals work, and what could cause a total loss, do not send funds. A small deposit is not a reliable legitimacy test.
What to do if you already clicked, connected, or paid
If you clicked a link but sent nothing
- Close the page; do not download software, connect a wallet, or continue a chat.
- Install security updates and run a malware scan if you downloaded or opened a file.
- If you entered any credentials, follow the steps below from the genuine service.
If you entered a password or authentication code
- Change the password immediately by opening the official site or app independently, and change it anywhere it was reused.
- Revoke unfamiliar sessions and API keys; reset multi-factor authentication if needed.
- Contact the genuine exchange using a support channel you locate yourself. Alert your email provider and mobile carrier if account takeover or number porting may be involved.
If you connected a wallet or approved a transaction
- Disconnect the suspicious site and, using a reputable independently verified tool, revoke token approvals you do not recognize.
- If the seed phrase may have been exposed, create a new wallet and move remaining assets there using a safe device; do not enter the old phrase into a recovery website.
- Preserve transaction hashes, wallet addresses, URLs, screenshots, and messages. A connection alone differs from a signed approval, so review what permissions or transfers you actually approved.
If you shared a seed phrase or sent crypto
- Assume a disclosed seed phrase or private key is compromised. If any assets remain, move them to a newly created wallet whose phrase has never been shared or digitally exposed.
- Do not pay additional withdrawal fees, taxes, or “recovery” charges. Contact the originating exchange or custodian immediately if the transfer began there.
- Report promptly to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, the FTC, and the relevant regulator when appropriate. Include transaction hashes and destination addresses.
- Be skeptical of people who contact you claiming they can recover the funds for a fee. Reporting may assist an investigation, but recovery is uncertain; the FBI warns about recovery-service scams in its victim guidance.
What hardware wallets can—and cannot—do
A hardware wallet can keep signing keys isolated from many threats to an ordinary computer or phone, but it does not identify every malicious website, contract, address, or social-engineering attempt. It cannot make a user-approved fraudulent transaction safe, repair an exposed recovery phrase, or reverse a confirmed transfer. Ledger’s vendor materials specifically caution that users can be tricked into approving malicious smart-contract transactions; see its wallet guidance.
Hardware devices add cost and backup responsibility. A software wallet may be adequate for small balances, while dedicated signing hardware may suit users who hold more and can protect a recovery phrase and verify the device and software through official channels. Self-custody means you control the keys but also bear responsibility for access and recovery; exchange custody is more convenient but leaves account access and withdrawals dependent on the provider’s systems and rules. Neither approach removes scam risk.
Where to report a scam in the United States
- FBI IC3: ic3.gov for online crime complaints, including crypto investment fraud.
- FTC: ReportFraud.ftc.gov for consumer fraud reports.
- SEC or CFTC: Use the relevant agency’s complaint or tip channels when the matter concerns securities or commodities/derivatives, respectively.
Provide the messages, URLs, wallet addresses, transaction hashes, and timeline. Keep copies of evidence and do not delete communications before documenting them.
