Razer Zephyr Refunds: What the FTC Said About Its “N95-Grade” Claims

The Razer Zephyr was marketed as “N95-grade,” but the FTC said it was never certified as an N95. Here’s how the settlement and 2025 refund distribution worked.

The FTC said Razer marketed its Zephyr mask as “N95-grade” even though it had never been certified as an N95 respirator or submitted to FDA or NIOSH for testing. A 2024 settlement required more than $1.1 million in combined consumer relief and a civil penalty; the FTC announced the distribution of refunds to 6,764 consumers in January 2025.

What was the Razer Zephyr?

The Zephyr was a technology-styled face covering aimed at gaming and tech consumers. Its transparent front made the wearer’s mouth visible, while RGB lighting, replaceable filters and powered fans distinguished it from an ordinary disposable mask. Those features were part of its design, not proof of respiratory protection. The FTC’s case summary describes the enforcement matter and its timeline.

Why did the FTC challenge the “N95-grade” claim?

In its April 2024 announcement, the FTC said Razer and affiliated entities advertised the Zephyr as “N95-grade” or equivalent to N95 protection, including in connection with protection from airborne particles and COVID-related risks. The FTC said the masks had never been certified as N95 and had not been submitted to the FDA or the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for testing. The agency’s enforcement announcement describes the allegations and proposed settlement.

That distinction matters: “N95-grade” is a marketing description, not a NIOSH approval. The FTC action addressed the N95-related and health-protection representations in the case; it was not a finding that every Zephyr provided no filtration at all, nor was it a product recall.

What did the 2024 settlement require?

The settlement separated money for consumers from a civil penalty. The widely reported total of more than $1.1 million combines those two different obligations.

Obligation Amount Purpose
Consumer relief $1,071,254.33 Payment to the United States for consumer refunds
Civil penalty $100,000 Penalty, separate from consumer relief
Combined amount More than $1.1 million Consumer relief plus civil penalty

The order also restricted covered entities from deceptive COVID-related health claims, unsupported claims about protective health equipment, false claims that products met government-established standards, and deceptive use of government logos or trademarks implying affiliation. It addressed misrepresentations about performance, efficacy, total cost and other material product characteristics. The FTC case page lists the complaint filed April 26, 2024, the FTC’s April 29 announcement and a stipulated order dated May 6, 2024.

When were refunds sent, and who received them?

The settlement funding obligation and the actual refund distribution were separate events. On January 13, 2025, the FTC announced it was sending full refunds to 6,764 consumers who bought the deceptively marketed Zephyr products. The payments totaled more than $1 million, according to the refund announcement.

The FTC describes payments to identified consumers; its public summary does not establish that every historical purchaser automatically received money or that a new claim form is open to all former owners. Check the official Razer refund page for any current eligibility, late-payment or reissue instructions before taking action.

How were the payments delivered?

The FTC said the refunds were sent by check or PayPal. Its instructions said checks should be cashed within 90 days and PayPal payments accepted within 30 days. The FTC identified Simpluris as the refund administrator and listed 1-833-285-3003 for refund questions. Because deadlines for the original distribution have passed, consult the live FTC refund page rather than assuming an expired payment can still be redeemed or reissued. The FTC also maintains a refund-program directory.

How to handle a suspicious refund message

A PayPal notice is not automatically fraudulent—the FTC used PayPal for this program—but verify it using the official FTC page, not a link in an unsolicited message. The FTC says it will not demand money, threaten consumers or require a transfer to release a refund. Do not pay a processing fee, send cryptocurrency or return money to someone claiming that a payment must be unlocked.

Is a Razer Zephyr a legitimate N95 respirator?

No. In the regulatory sense relevant to this case, the Zephyr was not N95-certified. A filter, fan, transparent panel or company’s own performance description cannot substitute for the applicable approval process. That conclusion is about certification status; it does not establish that the mask had zero filtration or that every transparent or powered mask is ineffective.

For N95-level respiratory protection, check for a NIOSH approval number and verify the exact model in the NIOSH Certified Equipment List. Fit also matters: gaps around the nose, cheeks or chin can reduce protection, and facial hair in the sealing area can interfere with the seal. A verified respirator that fits poorly may not perform as expected.

What to check when choosing a replacement respirator

  • Approval: Verify the model and its NIOSH approval information in the official database; do not rely on “N95-style,” “N95-grade” or “N95 equivalent” wording alone.
  • Fit: Choose a model that seals closely to your face. Facial hair where the respirator contacts the skin can compromise the seal.
  • Use case: Consider whether you need protection for everyday exposure, wildfire smoke, occupational dust or a healthcare setting; requirements can differ.
  • Practical wear: Comfort and breathing resistance affect whether you can keep the respirator on as needed. Reusable elastomeric models also require cleaning, storage and filter replacement.
  • Authenticity: Buy from a reputable source and check the product’s approval information and labeling.
  • Communication features: Transparent panels or voice-amplifying features may address communication needs, but they do not establish N95 approval or fit.

The FTC case page identifies the Zephyr as a product sold beginning October 21, 2021, but the cited FTC materials do not establish its current retail availability. A marketplace listing, if one appears, would not change the product’s certification status.
