For a business focused on Slovenia, .si is the clearest local signal. For a business serving customers across Europe or internationally, .com offers a geographically neutral identity. A third option, .eu, may suit an eligible business that wants a European brand, but Google treats it as generic for country-targeting purposes. Choose based on customers, brand and registration terms—not an assumption that one extension automatically ranks better or costs less.
How .si, .com and .eu differ
| Extension | Best fit | Google’s geographic treatment | Registration checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| .si | A business whose main audience or identity is in Slovenia. | A country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) tied to Slovenia and a strong signal that the site is intended for that country. | Check Register.si’s current terms and the registrar’s process and quote. |
| .com | A business seeking a cross-border or international identity. | A generic top-level domain (gTLD), not a Slovenia-specific signal. | Check name availability and the registrar’s current terms and quote. |
| .eu | An eligible business or individual emphasizing a European identity. | A generic regional domain for country-targeting purposes. | Check EURid’s eligibility criteria, current terms, availability and quote. |
Google describes ccTLDs as tied to specific countries and says they provide a strong signal to users and search engines about the country a site is intended for. It classifies .com as generic and treats .eu as generic for country targeting. These are signals, not ranking guarantees: the extension alone does not determine who can find or use a site. Google Search Central explains the distinction and international site options.
Choose according to your customers and brand
Choose .si for a Slovenia-first business
If most customers are in Slovenia, .si makes the local focus immediately legible in the address. It is the most direct of these three extensions for signalling that market. That can support a coherent local identity, but it does not replace Slovenian-language content, accurate business information or a useful customer experience.
Choose .com for a geographically flexible identity
If you expect to serve several countries and do not want the address itself to imply a single national market, .com is the more neutral option. A .com site can still target Slovenian customers; it simply does not carry the same country-specific signal as .si. Make the intended audiences clear through the site’s content and structure.

Consider .eu when the European identity matters
.eu can fit a brand positioned around Europe rather than Slovenia alone. It does not function as a Slovenia-targeting signal in Google’s guidance, and registration is limited by EURid’s eligibility rules. Confirm that the business or individual qualifies before building a brand around it.
For search, the site structure matters too
A domain ending is one part of international targeting, not a substitute for clear pages. Google recommends locale-specific URLs and language or regional signals such as hreflang annotations or sitemaps. Depending on the business, country-specific domains, subdomains and subdirectories are all possible structures, with different maintenance and targeting trade-offs.
For example, a .com business serving Slovenia and other markets might use distinct URLs for relevant language or country versions and identify those versions clearly. A .si address signals Slovenia more directly, but pages intended for additional audiences still need an understandable structure. Google’s guidance does not promise that choosing a particular extension will produce higher rankings.
Check eligibility and .si registration rules
.si terms and the registrar process
Register.si’s terms, published and effective 15 November 2024, set .si domain-name length at a minimum of 2 characters and a maximum of 63, with restrictions on permitted characters and hyphens. Review the current Register.si terms for the full syntax rules. Holders submit registration requests through registrars; Register.si also describes a return window subject to the domain remaining inactive. Check the registry’s registration guidance and the registrar’s current process before relying on that condition.
Rank #3
The .si sources reviewed do not establish a general Slovenian-residency requirement for holders, so do not assume one—or assume eligibility without checking the current rules. Policies for country-code domains vary by registry; ICANN advises registrants to consult the relevant domain manager. ICANN’s ccTLD policy FAQ provides that general guidance.
.eu eligibility
EURid’s published rules allow qualifying organisations established in an EU Member State, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway to register .eu domains. Individuals must meet the published residence or citizenship criteria. Eligibility can depend on the registrant’s circumstances, so verify the current criteria directly with EURid’s .eu registration information.

Compare the real cost and keep control of the registration
There is no established universal price comparison here: availability and registrar quotes depend on the name and provider. EU guidance notes that domain-registration costs can vary by registration period and associated services, such as hosting. Compare like for like—especially renewal pricing and included services—rather than assuming .si, .com or .eu is cheapest. The EU’s business guidance on domain names explains the cost factors.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Check live availability for the exact name and extension you want.
- Compare the registration period, renewal price and any bundled services in each registrar’s quote.
- Register in the business’s name where appropriate, and retain access to the registrar account.
- Keep holder details accurate and current, and ensure the holder has direct access to the registration contact email, as Register.si’s holder-data guidance requires.
A practical decision
- Mostly Slovenian customers: prefer .si if the name is available and the registration terms work for you.
- Several European markets or a global audience: consider .com for a neutral address, or .eu if a European identity fits and you qualify.
- Serving Slovenia and other markets: decide whether a Slovenia-first identity or a neutral, multi-market brand matters more, then build clear language and regional URLs around that choice.
