The $849 MacBook Air M2 offer was a real Best Buy promotion reported on May 10, 2024—not a price you should assume is available today. The deal was advertised as $150 off a then-listed $999 price, but the original report does not identify a durable product SKU or confirm every detail of the unit’s configuration. In 2026, judge an M2 Air by its exact memory, storage, condition, warranty, and price against newer models—not by the old $849 headline.
What was the $849 deal?
| Detail | What the 2024 report said |
|---|---|
| Retailer | Best Buy |
| Reported | May 10, 2024 |
| Promotional price | $849 |
| Advertised savings | $150 off a stated $999 price |
| Product | MacBook Air with M2; apparently the 13-inch model |
| Current status | Historical offer; present availability is not established |
The original deal report confirms the retailer, date, and advertised price. It does not visibly pin down a model number, memory and storage combination, or a live product listing that can verify what is for sale now. It also does not establish whether the deal price applied to new, open-box, or limited-stock units, or what tax, shipping, pickup, or regional conditions applied. Treat $849 as the reported promotion, not a current checkout quote.
Which M2 Air was probably on sale?
The likely candidate is the 13.6-inch base M2 MacBook Air: an 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 8GB unified memory, and 256GB SSD. Those are available base specifications, not confirmed details of the exact $849 unit. Apple also offered configurations with 16GB or 24GB unified memory, a 10-core GPU, and storage up to 2TB. Check the listing or device model details before comparing prices; the chip name alone does not identify the configuration.
Apple’s M2 MacBook Air technical specifications list a 13.6-inch, 2560-by-1664 Liquid Retina display rated at 500 nits, a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, and a 2.7-pound aluminum laptop measuring 0.44 inches thick. Memory and storage are selected configurations, not parts to upgrade later. If you are buying used or refurbished, do not assume the advertised 8GB/256GB configuration—or any other one—without checking the specific item.

What the M2 Air still offers
- Portable, quiet design: It weighs 2.7 pounds and has no fan, so ordinary work is silent. Its thin aluminum enclosure is convenient to carry.
- A capable everyday platform: Apple silicon is well suited to common school and office work, browsing, streaming, video calls, and lighter creative tasks. Demanding sustained workloads are a different buying case.
- Useful charging and audio connections: It has MagSafe 3 charging, two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
- Good built-in camera: The 1080p webcam is a practical step up from lower-resolution laptop cameras.
- Long stated battery life: Apple rates it for up to 15 hours of wireless web use or up to 18 hours of Apple TV app movie playback. These are controlled-test “up to” figures, not a promise for every workday; brightness, calls, connected devices, and workload change real-world runtime.
The original deal article also praised its battery behavior and performance while unplugged based on the author’s personal use. That is an individual observation, not a standardized battery test or guarantee for a used unit.
What to check before buying
- Identify the exact machine: Confirm M2, screen size, memory, and SSD capacity. Retail search pages can mix chip generations, 13- and 15-inch models, and new, open-box, refurbished, or marketplace inventory.
- Prioritize memory: For many tabs, development tools, virtual machines, or larger creative projects, 16GB is a more comfortable long-term choice than 8GB. Eight gigabytes can still serve ordinary workloads; it is not universally inadequate.
- Assess storage needs: 256GB can be tight if you keep large photo libraries, video, or many applications locally. Consider 512GB if the premium is reasonable, since the SSD is not user-upgradeable.
- For refurbished or used stock, inspect the terms: Look for battery-health disclosure, return window, warranty length, cosmetic grade, included charger, seller identity, and a clear path to confirm the Mac is not Activation Locked.
- Compare the full price: Check tax, shipping, pickup availability, and whether the seller is the retailer or a marketplace vendor. A headline price is not the final cost or proof of stock.
Is an M2 Air worth buying at $849 now?
New at $849
An 8GB/256GB M2 at $849 is hard to justify if a newer Air is close in price. The older laptop may still suit someone who specifically wants macOS and a light machine, but compare memory and storage as well as generation. A 16GB M2 can be a better fit for heavier multitasking than a newer 8GB model, depending on the actual price and condition. Do not pay $849 on the assumption that the 2024 offer is still available or that the original configuration is known.

Refurbished around the mid-$600s
Best Buy search listings indexed in July and August 2026 showed some Geek Squad Certified Refurbished 13.6-inch M2 Air units with 8GB memory and 256GB SSD around $675–$680. These are historical comparison signals, not guaranteed live prices or stock. Check the specific Best Buy listings for current condition, seller, warranty, return terms, and final price. At a materially lower price than a new Air, a warrantied refurbished M2 may make sense for basic everyday use.
When a newer Air is close in price
For a new laptop intended to last several years, a newer Air is generally the safer value when the price gap is modest: it brings a newer platform and avoids paying near-current-model money for older stock. Compare the exact memory and storage, however; a newer base model is not automatically preferable to an older model with more memory for every workload. Apple’s MacBook Air page is the official place to check the current lineup, while Apple’s refurbished Mac page can show whether a newer Air is available refurbished. Inventory changes, and the indexed Apple refurbished listings available for this comparison showed newer M4 and M5 Air models rather than a clearly listed M2.

Who should consider it—and who should skip it?
A reasonable fit
- Students, office workers, travelers, and families who mainly browse, write, use spreadsheets, stream, and join video calls.
- Buyers who want macOS and portability, can accept the particular memory and storage configuration, and find the machine substantially cheaper than a comparable newer Air.
- Light creative users whose projects fit the available memory and storage.
Look elsewhere
- People doing sustained professional video, 3D, software builds, or scientific workloads should compare a MacBook Pro or another machine designed for heavier sustained performance.
- Buyers who need a higher-end display should know the Air’s Liquid Retina panel is not the MacBook Pro’s mini-LED or OLED class of display.
- Users who need multiple external monitors, many built-in ports, an SD card slot, HDMI, or cellular connectivity may find the Air limiting. The M2 Air natively supports one external display up to 6K at 60Hz, alongside its two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports.
- Anyone planning to upgrade RAM or SSD later: neither is user-upgradeable, so choose enough at purchase.
Alternatives if the old deal is gone
- Newer MacBook Air: Favor it when current pricing is close and you want a new machine with a newer generation. Verify the actual memory and storage tier.
- Apple-refurbished Air: A useful route for buyers who prioritize purchasing through Apple; check current inventory because older models may not be listed.
- Retailer-certified refurbished M2 Air: Consider it when the discount is substantial and the specific unit has acceptable battery disclosure, return rights, and warranty. Indexed Best Buy examples around $675–$680 are not a live-price guarantee.
- Windows ultraportable: Compare same-budget models if you want 16GB memory and 512GB storage for less, or do not need macOS. Compare screen, battery, build, warranty, and software needs rather than specifications alone.
- Used higher-tier Apple silicon MacBook Pro: This can suit sustained workloads or display and port needs, but only after checking battery condition, warranty, seller reputation, and return terms. A low price does not offset an undisclosed repair or battery risk.
Bottom line
The $849 M2 MacBook Air price was a strong reported Best Buy deal in May 2024, but it is not evidence of an active offer in 2026. For a purchase today, compare the exact M2 configuration and condition with newer and refurbished Airs. A well-supported refurbished M2 at a meaningfully lower price can still be sensible for everyday work; an 8GB/256GB model near $849 is much less compelling when a newer Air is similarly priced.
