On August 1, 2022, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Sunny Optical was expected to receive the largest share of Apple’s iPhone 14 orders for a specific component: the seven-element plastic lens assembly used by the rear Main (wide) camera. His estimated share was 50–60% for the Pro models’ high-end lenses and 55–65% for the standard models’ lower-end lenses. This was a pre-launch supply-chain forecast, not an Apple-confirmed allocation or a claim that Sunny Optical supplied the phones’ entire camera systems.
What Kuo said Sunny Optical would supply
Kuo’s report concerned wide-camera 7P lenses across all four iPhone 14 models. In Apple’s terminology, the relevant camera is the rear Main camera; “wide” here does not mean the separate Ultra Wide camera. The percentages were estimates of Sunny Optical’s share of Apple’s orders in each lens category, not its share of the global lens market.

These ranges were attributed to Kuo’s supply-chain analysis in contemporary coverage, including 9to5Mac’s report and BGR’s account of the model-by-model estimates. Largan and Genius were expected to divide much of the remaining supply in roughly similar proportions; the reports did not establish a final audited split.
Why Sunny Optical was called the supply “winner”
The label described expected order volume and supplier position, not a proven increase in profit. Kuo’s allocation estimates put Sunny Optical ahead in both the Pro and standard wide-lens categories, despite market expectations that Largan and Genius would be the more prominent suppliers. Contemporary accounts said Sunny Optical had recently entered Apple’s supply chain and had expanded production capacity. Increased capacity and aggressive pricing reportedly helped it compete for more orders and use its factories more fully. AppleInsider’s coverage summarized the capacity context.

What the allocation meant for Largan and Genius
Largan and Genius were not described as losing Apple’s business: they were expected to supply a substantial portion of the remaining lenses. A larger Sunny Optical allocation could nonetheless mean fewer units for competitors and less leverage in negotiations. The likely financial effect would depend on each supplier’s prices, costs, product mix, and margins, none of which can be derived from allocation share alone.
One reported comparison helps explain why volume and earnings need not move together. Kuo’s analysis put Largan’s average selling price for wide 7P lenses about 15–25% above Sunny Optical’s and Genius’s. That is a reported component-price comparison, not evidence of the companies’ total revenues or profit margins. A lower-priced supplier gaining units could put pressure on competitors’ economics even while Apple benefits from more price competition. A contemporaneous Cool3c analysis likewise framed the shift as potentially more consequential for supplier profitability than revenue; that is an interpretation, not a confirmed financial result.

What “7P wide-camera lens” means
“7P” describes a lens construction with seven plastic optical elements. The lens assembly focuses light onto an image sensor; it is not the sensor, a complete camera module, or Apple’s image-processing software. The report did not say Sunny Optical supplied every lens or camera component in the iPhone 14 lineup.
Element count alone does not establish image quality. Results also depend on the sensor, aperture, stabilization, coatings, manufacturing tolerances, calibration, and computational photography. The supplier’s identity by itself therefore does not show that a phone would take visibly better or worse photos than one using a lens from Largan or Genius.

How the claim fits the iPhone 14 cameras that launched
Apple introduced the iPhone 14 lineup in September 2022. The standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus had a 12-megapixel Main camera with a 26mm-equivalent focal length, an ƒ/1.5 aperture, and sensor-shift optical image stabilization, according to Apple’s iPhone 14 specifications. Apple’s launch announcement described the Pro models as introducing its first 48-megapixel Main camera. Those figures describe camera capabilities; they do not identify the maker of the lens or confirm Kuo’s allocation estimate. Apple’s announcement records the launch and Pro camera context. The iPhone 14, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max became available September 16, 2022; the iPhone 14 Plus followed on October 7, according to Apple’s ordering and availability notice.
What was—and was not—confirmed
The August 1 report was a forecast made before launch. Apple’s public materials describe camera specifications and availability, but do not publish supplier identities or lens-order percentages. The cited reporting does not document Apple’s purchase orders or independently verify the final allocation after production. It is therefore accurate to say Kuo expected Sunny Optical to lead supply of a particular lens category, not that Apple confirmed Sunny Optical made most iPhone 14 cameras.
