There is no verified list of the 10 highest celebrity homes in the Hollywood Hills. The available reporting identifies notable homes on hillsides and ridges, but does not compare their elevations using a consistent measurement. Two properties stand out in the documented record: a historic ridge-top Craftsman associated with Philip Ahn, Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, and Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford’s long-owned estate near Runyon Canyon.
Here is what is known about those homes—and why famous views, large lots and listing-agent descriptions are not proof of an altitude ranking.
Why there is no reliable top-10 elevation ranking
“Highest” can mean a home at the greatest elevation above sea level, or simply one that sits high on a hillside with expansive views. Those are not interchangeable. The available accounts describe settings, architecture, sizes and real-estate listings; they do not provide comparable elevation measurements for 10 celebrity homes.
Los Angeles city planning’s 2007 Hollywoodland history offers a useful example of the distinction. It says early film-industry figures settled in Hollywoodland and that the neighborhood’s homes are characteristically built on hillsides. Mack Sennett owned land at Mount Lee’s highest point and planned an 18-acre estate, but the estate was never built; the site later became a communications post. High ground alone does not establish that a celebrity home was built there. Los Angeles city planning’s Hollywoodland community-plan document provides historical context, not a current census of residents or an elevation survey.

Alta Loma Terrace: a Craftsman on a ridge above the Hollywood Bowl
The Los Angeles Conservancy identifies 6881 Alta Loma Terrace in Hollywood Heights as a 1921 Craftsman residence with Japanese influences. It describes the house as standing on a ridge overlooking the Hollywood Bowl and documents its historical associations with actor Philip Ahn and, later, musicians Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.
The Conservancy says Cobain and Love rented the house for about a year beginning in late 1992. It reports that Cobain worked on Nirvana’s In Utero there and Love began writing Hole’s Live Through This there. These are past associations, not evidence of current celebrity residency.

The Conservancy’s record says the Cultural Heritage Commission declined in 2022 to recommend the home for Historic-Cultural Monument designation. The record also said the house was still standing and that its owner had stated an intent to demolish it; that status may have changed. The organization identifies it as a private residence and marks it “Do Not Disturb.” Read the Los Angeles Conservancy’s residence record for its preservation information; do not visit or approach the property.
Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford’s estate near Runyon Canyon
Architectural Digest reported on July 9, 2026, that actor Helen Mirren and director Taylor Hackford were listing their Hollywood Hills estate for $12 million. The publication said they had owned it since the 1980s and that the house was built in 1911 for silent-film star Dustin Farnum. A reported asking price is time-sensitive and does not establish the home’s current listing status. Architectural Digest’s July 2026 listing report covers the listing and the property’s history.

Architectural Digest described the property as a 6.5-acre compound with a 6,600-square-foot main house, a three-bedroom guesthouse, and a garage with an office and apartment; its report gave the total compound area as 10,200 square feet. These are publication-reported property figures, not elevation measurements.
In a 2021 listing account, Realtor.com reported that the estate adjoins Runyon Canyon and quoted listing agent Joyce Rey describing it as being “at the top of a private winding drive.” That phrase is promotional listing language, not a measured comparison with other homes. Realtor.com’s July 2021 report preserves the earlier listing description. Architectural Digest also quoted Mirren’s description of the home: “Although it’s a big house, it doesn’t feel like a big house,” adding, “You don’t feel like you’re a little pea in a huge pod rattling around.”
Why dramatic listings do not establish which homes are highest
Real-estate coverage often emphasizes views, size or a home’s position on a winding drive. Those details can make a property sound elevated without showing how its elevation compares with another home’s.
- A 2019 Fox Business story described a listing at 8408 Hillside Avenue as more than 20,000 square feet and quoted listing agent David Parnes calling it “the biggest home in the Hollywood Hills.” That was an agent’s size claim, not an elevation ranking, and the cited passage does not establish a celebrity-owner connection. Fox Business’s 2019 report gives the context for the claim.
- A 2014 Los Angeles Times feature described a Gary Johns-designed house at 7007 Los Tilos Road in Outpost Estates. It reported a 0.94-acre lot and an $8.5 million asking price at that time, but did not identify a celebrity owner. Those historical listing details do not make it a verified celebrity home or establish its elevation. The Los Angeles Times feature covers the listing.
What a genuine “highest homes” list would need
A defensible ranking would first verify each celebrity connection and distinguish ownership, tenancy and current residence. It would then compare each property’s elevation above sea level using the same measurement method. Neighborhood labels, views, hillside locations and lot sizes cannot substitute for those data.

Until comparable measurements and verified celebrity associations are available, the most accurate account is a selective tour of documented hillside and ridge homes—not a ranked list of 10 homes by altitude.
