.si is Slovenia’s country-code top-level domain (ccTLD), managed by the Academic and Research Network of Slovenia (ARNES). Register.si’s terms define a domain holder as a natural or legal person and do not state a Slovenia-residency requirement in the cited provisions. To register, apply through a registrar and check that your chosen name is available, unreserved, valid under the naming rules, and consistent with applicable law.

What does .si mean?

The .si ending identifies Slovenia’s country-code top-level domain. IANA lists ARNES as its manager and records the domain’s registration date as 1 April 1992; the delegation record was last updated on 25 March 2026. IANA’s .si delegation record provides those details.

Who can register a .si domain?

Register.si’s general terms define a domain holder as “a natural or legal person who registers a domain name in accordance with these General terms and conditions.” The cited definition and application clause do not state a Slovenia-residency requirement. They also do not guarantee that every applicant or requested name will be accepted: current registry terms, contact-data requirements, legal restrictions, and the name’s status still matter.

Holder requests normally go through a domain registrar, which handles the registration between the applicant and the registry. Register.si’s terms, published and effective 15 November 2024, specify exceptions to that usual route. Read the .si general terms and conditions and confirm the registrar’s current process.

How to get a .si domain

  1. Choose a registrar. Submit your request through a registrar rather than assuming you can apply directly to the registry.
  2. Check the exact name. Confirm it is both unregistered and not reserved. Availability alone does not mean a name is lawful to use.
  3. Check the naming rules. A name must satisfy the length, character, and hyphen requirements described below.
  4. Review registration and renewal terms. The sources here do not establish current registrar prices; check the registrar’s fees and renewal conditions before placing an order.

Register.si’s registration and return guidance explains the process and restrictions in plain language.

What names are allowed?

The general terms set a length of 2 to 63 characters. Names can use the standard Latin alphabet, digits, hyphens, and the listed characters supported for internationalized domain names (IDNs). A name cannot begin or end with a hyphen. Two consecutive hyphens cannot occupy the third and fourth positions unless the string is an allowed ACE string used for an IDN. Check the registry’s current rules if you plan to use non-ASCII characters.

Some names are reserved for public authorities: 112.si for civil protection and disaster relief, 113.si for police, and si.si and rs.si for the government. The registry may also reject or deactivate names that conflict with law, public policy, or morals. Its guidance describes possible concerns including official names and national symbols, consumer protection, trademarks, and business or association names. See Register.si’s guidance on names contrary to law, public order, or morality.

Does an available .si name clear trademark rights?

No. Availability means the registry has not registered or reserved that name; it is not a determination that you have the right to use it. Consider relevant trademark, business-name, consumer-protection, and other legal interests before registering. The general terms also incorporate the .si alternative domain-name dispute-resolution rules (ARDS), so registration does not prevent a third party from raising a claim under the applicable rules.

Can you cancel after registering?

Register.si describes a 16-day return period, but it is conditional rather than an unconditional refund guarantee. The domain must remain inactive, and the registry says activation occurs once nameserver records are submitted to its activation system. Contact your registrar promptly if you want to return a registration, and check the current return conditions before relying on the window.
