September 16, 2024, was the date of a promotional livestream unveiling World Liberty Financial—not the start of a fully operational retail crypto platform or a freely tradable WLFI token. The token sale came later, and public trading began in 2025. Separating those milestones matters: WLFI is described as a governance token, not company stock or a promise of income.

What Trump and his sons announced for September 16

On September 13, 2024, Donald Trump promoted a World Liberty Financial event scheduled for Monday, September 16, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. The planned Mar-a-Lago livestream was branded the “Donald Trump State of Crypto Address.” Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump were also associated with the venture. The announcement presented World Liberty Financial as a crypto platform, but offered few details about its products or how it would work. TechTimes’ September 13 report was a preview of the event, not evidence that a complete platform was already live.

What happened at the livestream

The September 16 event was a lengthy, largely promotional audio livestream, not a software launch, exchange listing or documented rollout of a functioning DeFi service. Contemporary Axios coverage said it revealed little beyond plans for a token called WLFI and its intended distribution. The distinction is important: an announcement about a token does not mean attendees or the public could immediately buy and freely transfer it.

How the project’s milestones unfolded

Milestone What the available source says
September 16, 2024 Promotional livestream and project reveal; not a public trading launch. Axios
Approximately October 14, 2024–March 14, 2025 World Liberty Financial’s tokenomics documentation says WLFI was sold at $0.015 and $0.05 during this period and that the sales raised a combined $550 million. These are the project’s reported sale figures, not a market valuation or money necessarily received personally by Trump. Official tokenomics documentation
September 1, 2025 An SEC-filed ALT5 Sigma corporate announcement says WLFI launched for trading. The announcement reported $4.7 billion in spot-trading volume within 24 hours; that is a company-reported volume claim, not $4.7 billion in investor funds raised. SEC-filed announcement

The official tokenomics page says the sale tokens were initially locked and non-transferable. A token allocation, a governance right, and an asset that can be transferred or sold are different things; buyers should check the applicable terms and the rules of the specific wallet or trading venue rather than assume that a purchase means immediate liquidity.

What WLFI does—and does not—give holders

World Liberty Financial describes WLFI as a governance token used for voting in its governance system, subject to project rules and restrictions. An SEC-filed token-purchase agreement says WLFI does not confer equity, ownership, dividends, profit-sharing, debt or similar economic rights; its stated rights are governance rights under the project’s terms. Read the agreement before treating the token as an investment in a company.

Governance rights do not automatically mean control over the businesses, cash flow, or a right to a share of profits. Nor does the label “governance token” by itself settle how a particular sale or promotion is treated under applicable law. A token can also lose substantial or all of its value.

USD1 is a separate product from WLFI

World Liberty Financial’s current website also promotes USD1, a dollar-pegged stablecoin associated with its ecosystem. The two assets serve different stated purposes: WLFI is governance-oriented, while USD1 is intended to track the U.S. dollar for payment or settlement use. A target peg is not the same as a guarantee, bank deposit or assurance of redemption in every circumstance. Anyone assessing USD1 should examine issuer disclosures about reserves, redemption, custody and counterparties rather than infer safety from the word “stablecoin.”

What the project discloses about Trump-linked economics

The venture was publicly promoted by Trump and associated with his sons, but that alone does not establish the corporate ownership structure. World Liberty Financial’s website currently says Trump holds or is allocated 22.5 billion WLFI tokens, and says DT Marks DEFI LLC is entitled to 75% of WLFI token-sale proceeds after specified deductions. These are first-party disclosures; they should not be read as proof of the tokens’ market value or of personal cash proceeds. They also illustrate why readers should distinguish a token allocation and an entity’s contractual entitlement from proceeds actually paid to an individual.

Why the political context raises questions

World Liberty Financial emerged during the 2024 presidential campaign and used the name and public profile of a presidential candidate to promote a private crypto venture. That context can lead purchasers to read political association as an endorsement or assurance, even though it does not establish either. The project’s website says its entities and tokens are not political and are not associated with a political campaign; that is the company’s position, not an independent resolution of conflict-of-interest concerns.

Senators later questioned the project’s stablecoin communications, and a Democratic staff report in the House discussed crypto-related conflicts and the venture. These are oversight and political-analysis materials, not court findings. The Senate Banking Committee letter and the House Judiciary Democratic staff report document the scrutiny; neither establishes a final legal judgment about the project.

What to verify before interacting with WLFI or USD1

  • Rights: Read the token terms and governance rules to see what voting rights exist and what restrictions apply.
  • Transferability: Confirm whether the specific tokens you would receive can be transferred or sold, and under what conditions.
  • Proceeds and incentives: Review who receives sale proceeds or related fees, using project disclosures and legal filings rather than assuming a token purchase funds a particular person.
  • Stablecoin exposure: For USD1, assess reserve, redemption, custody and counterparty disclosures; a dollar target does not eliminate depeg or issuer risk.
  • Authenticity and custody: Verify domains, contract addresses and wallet instructions through official channels. Political branding and high-profile names can attract impersonation and phishing attempts.
  • Legal status: A project’s terminology does not determine how regulators or courts will assess a sale or promotion under securities, consumer-protection, commodities, money-transmission, tax or campaign-finance rules.
