Amazon is a strong choice for broad selection, Costco for bulk buying, and eBay for used or hard-to-find goods—but seller quality, delivery costs, and return rules can change which site is the better deal. For U.S. shoppers, start with the retailer that fits the item, then compare the full delivered cost and the route for returning it.
That distinction matters because several large shopping sites also host third-party sellers. A product appearing on a retailer’s website is not necessarily sold, shipped, or covered by that retailer’s own policies.

What makes an online shopping website worth using?
A useful comparison goes beyond the product’s displayed price. The Federal Trade Commission advises shoppers to compare total cost—including shipping, handling, taxes, and other fees—and to review seller information, returns, reviews, and payment protections. See the FTC’s online shopping guidance.
- Selection and seller clarity: Can you find the exact model and condition you need, and can you tell who is selling and fulfilling it?
- Total cost: Include shipping, taxes, membership costs, required accessories, delivery surcharges, installation, and possible return costs. Subtract only discounts you can actually use.
- Fulfillment: Check the delivery estimate, local pickup options, and whether the date is an estimate or a stated guarantee.
- Returns and recourse: Look for the return deadline, condition rules, shipping responsibility, fees, and whether a local store can accept the item.
- Category expertise: A specialist may make it easier to compare technical specifications or arrange project services, even if its sticker price is not the lowest.
- Account and payment security: Use the site’s checkout rather than paying a seller off-platform, and favor payment methods that offer meaningful dispute protections.
The nine sites below are category recommendations, not a universal ranking. Policies and availability can change, so check the current product listing and official policy before placing an order.

The 9 best online shopping websites by category
1. Amazon: best for broad selection and convenience
Amazon is a practical starting point for household goods, books, media, small electronics, and recurring purchases when selection and delivery options matter. Its breadth makes it easy to compare brands and price points, but a product page can include multiple offers from different sellers. A product sold by Amazon is not the same as one sold by an independent marketplace seller, even if Amazon handles shipping.
Before buying, check the seller and shipper, item condition, manufacturer warranty, delivery estimate, and return terms. Amazon’s returns and refunds information explains its process; its seller information describes the marketplace. For eligible offers, compare the seller’s history and the exact listing rather than relying only on product-level ratings.
Choose it when: you want broad mainstream selection or convenient replenishment. Look elsewhere when: seller identity, consistent service, or certainty about authenticity is more important than breadth.
2. Walmart: best for everyday value and local fulfillment
Walmart combines groceries, household staples, apparel, electronics, and general merchandise with options such as store pickup and delivery where available. Its physical stores can also make some purchases and returns more convenient. Check the item’s fulfillment method and whether it is sold by Walmart or a Marketplace seller.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Walmart’s returns policy lists a common 90-day period but also identifies exceptions, including categories such as major appliances, wireless phones, and consumer electronics. Marketplace purchases have a separate return policy, so do not assume every listing has the same process. For grocery orders, review delivery fees, minimums, and substitution preferences before checkout.
Choose it when: you want routine household shopping with local pickup or store access. Look elsewhere when: a Marketplace seller’s return terms or reputation make the apparent savings uncertain.
3. Target: best for curated everyday shopping and store returns
Target is a good fit for home décor, clothing, beauty, baby products, household essentials, and gifts. Its website and app connect with store services such as Drive Up and in-store returns, which can reduce return friction for eligible products.
Rank #2
- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
Target says most items it sells can generally be returned within 90 days, with some Target-owned-brand items receiving longer windows; exceptions and Target Plus partner terms apply. Check the current returns page and detailed return rules for the specific item. Target Circle 360 includes eligible same-day delivery, free two-day shipping on many items, and an extra 30 days for certain returns, subject to availability and exclusions; see Target Circle 360 terms.

Choose it when: you value a curated assortment and the option of local store service. Look elsewhere when: you need specialized parts or a product whose partner-seller terms are less convenient than buying directly from another retailer.
4. eBay: best for used, collectible, refurbished, and hard-to-find goods
eBay is especially useful for discontinued products, replacement parts, collectibles, vintage goods, used electronics, and refurbished items. Fixed-price listings and auctions provide different ways to buy, but the listing’s condition, photos, seller record, and shipping cost deserve close attention. An auction can also encourage overbidding.
eBay’s Money Back Guarantee generally covers eligible purchases that do not arrive, are damaged or faulty, or differ materially from the listing, subject to exclusions and deadlines. The same policy page states that, beginning May 7, 2026, certain bullion, coin, and paper-money transactions may have a three-calendar-day reporting deadline when the seller does not accept returns; this is a narrow rule, not a general eBay deadline. eBay also offers a Best Price Guarantee for qualifying new and manufacturer-refurbished items under specified conditions.
Check seller feedback, exact condition, return shipping responsibility, delivery estimate, and whether an authenticity program applies. Save the listing and act within the relevant reporting deadline if something is wrong.
Choose it when: the item is used, rare, collectible, or no longer readily sold by conventional retailers. Look elsewhere when: you need predictable condition or especially simple returns.
5. Etsy: best for handmade, personalized, vintage, and creator-made products
Etsy is a marketplace for distinctive goods such as personalized gifts, handmade décor, jewelry, art, wedding items, craft supplies, and vintage products. Many purchases are made to order, so production time is separate from shipping time. Policies and fulfillment vary by seller; Etsy is not a single retailer with one uniform return process.
Rank #3
- Gift Card is redeemable towards millions of items storewide at Amazon.com
- Gift Card has no fees and no expiration date
- Gift Card is nested inside a specialty gift box
- Free One-Day Shipping (where available)
- Scan and redeem any Gift Card with a mobile or tablet device via the Amazon App
Before ordering, confirm materials, dimensions, spelling and other personalization details, production schedule, seller location, cancellation terms, and return policy. Review customer photos and the listing carefully rather than relying on the word “handmade” alone. Etsy’s buyer help and Purchase Protection policy explain available support and eligibility.
Choose it when: customization or a distinctive creator-made product matters. Look elsewhere when: you need immediate delivery, standardized warranties, or a uniform returns experience.
6. Costco: best for bulk buying and warehouse-club value
Costco can be a strong option for bulk groceries and household supplies, as well as selected appliances, furniture, tires, and services. Its value depends on whether you will use the quantity, membership, and delivery options—not simply on the unit price shown. Online and warehouse prices can differ, and some products have their own fulfillment or return terms.
Compare unit cost with the amount you can realistically use, then factor in membership, shipping, delivery, installation, and haul-away where relevant. Read Costco’s return policy for product-specific exclusions and review membership information before joining. A large package is not a saving if part of it goes unused.
Choose it when: you shop in bulk regularly or are buying an eligible larger item with useful services. Look elsewhere when: you need a small quantity or are unlikely to use the membership.
7. Best Buy: best for consumer electronics and local support
Best Buy is suited to computers, TVs, phones, cameras, gaming, networking, smart-home products, and appliances. Its stores can be useful for pickup, product demonstrations, returns, installation, and technical services, especially when compatibility or after-sale help matters.

Compare the price with other sellers, but also check whether the listing is sold by Best Buy or a Marketplace seller. Review the returns and exchanges policy for category-specific deadlines and conditions. Open-box products, manufacturer warranties, and optional protection plans should each be assessed on their own terms; a paid plan is not automatically worthwhile. Current membership options are listed on Best Buy’s membership page.
Rank #4
- Amazon.com Gift Cards do not expire and carry no fees.
Choose it when: local support, pickup, setup, or installation is valuable. Look elsewhere when: you only need a commodity item and a lower total price is available with equally acceptable warranty and return terms.
8. The Home Depot: best for home improvement and project shopping
The Home Depot is a practical choice for tools, building materials, hardware, paint, lighting, lawn and garden products, appliances, and project services. Local stock and pickup may matter more than a small price difference when a project has a schedule. For large or heavy goods, compare delivery appointments, installation, haul-away, and return pickup as part of the cost.
Check product dimensions and compatibility, store inventory, and whether the item is sold by Home Depot or a marketplace partner. Its return policy covers the applicable rules; special-order, used, cut, tinted, or installed items may require particular care. The retailer’s price-match policy excludes certain channels, including auction, marketplace, and membership-based sites such as eBay, Costco, and Sam’s Club; qualifying products generally must be sold and fulfilled by an eligible retailer. See also its online shopping information.
Choose it when: the purchase is part of a home project and local inventory or services are useful. Look elsewhere when: delivery, installation, or compatibility is uncertain enough to erase a lower listed price.
9. Newegg: best for PC components and technical electronics
Newegg specializes in computer components, gaming hardware, monitors, networking gear, peripherals, and prebuilts. Its specification-focused selection can help experienced buyers compare parts, but a low price is no bargain if the component does not work with the rest of the build.
Verify the exact model and revision, socket, chipset, memory type, interface, power requirements, and physical dimensions. Check new, open-box, or refurbished condition, seller identity, manufacturer warranty, dead-on-arrival procedure, return deadline, and any restocking provisions. Newegg’s return policy and marketplace seller information are useful before ordering.
Choose it when: you are buying PC parts or technical hardware and can verify specifications. Look elsewhere when: you need a simpler general-purpose purchase or cannot confirm compatibility.

How to compare the real cost between two sites
Match the exact product first
Write down the brand, model number, size, color, quantity, condition, included accessories, and warranty requirement. Do not compare a new item with a refurbished one, a base model with a bundle, or different storage, memory, or regional versions. The FTC recommends recording the model information and comparing the same product across retailers: FTC online shopping guidance.
Calculate delivered cost
Use this formula: item price + shipping + handling + taxes + membership allocation + required accessories − guaranteed discounts. For bulk goods, divide the total by the usable quantity. For a membership, estimate only benefits you expect to use: shipping fees avoided, rewards actually redeemed, relevant discounts, and service value, less the membership fee. Do not count savings on purchases you would not otherwise make.
Check seller, fulfillment, and the return route
- Identify who sells the item and who ships it.
- Confirm condition, warranty, and the address or process for returns.
- Find the return window and when it begins; check who pays shipping and whether fees or exclusions apply.
- For bulky or fragile goods, include appointment delivery, installation, haul-away, damage inspection, and return pickup.
- For made-to-order goods, separate production time from transit time and verify all custom details before paying.
When does a shopping membership pay off?
A membership makes sense only when the benefits match your normal shopping habits and location. Consider how many qualifying orders you make, which shipping or delivery fees you would otherwise pay, whether same-day or grocery delivery is available in your ZIP code, and whether you will redeem the rewards. Check renewal, cancellation, and benefit exclusions before joining. A free-shipping offer can encourage extra purchases, so compare the annual fee with savings on orders you would have made anyway.
Amazon Prime, Walmart+, Target Circle 360, Costco membership, and Best Buy membership have different benefits and eligibility terms. Review the current official pages rather than relying on an old price or a benefit summary: Amazon Prime, Walmart+, Target Circle, Costco membership, and Best Buy memberships.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to avoid misleading deals, scams, and difficult returns
Verify the seller and product
Look for an unusually low price on branded goods as a reason to investigate, not proof of a bargain. Check seller history, clear product photos, exact model details, serial numbers or authenticity records where relevant, and warranty coverage. Avoid pressure to pay outside the marketplace; off-platform payment can cost you platform protections. The FTC’s marketplace guidance explains why platform rules and protections vary.
Read reviews critically
Do not rely on star ratings alone. Compare reviews from multiple sources, check dates and photos, and make sure feedback is for the exact model rather than a broader product family. Repeated generic wording or a rating pattern that does not match the written reviews deserves caution. For expensive purchases, independent expert testing can provide a useful second view.
Understand shipping and keep records
A delivery date may be an estimate, a carrier estimate, conditional on membership or local stock, or tied to a third-party seller’s handling time. The FTC says sellers must ship as promised; when no shipping time is promised, the applicable federal rule generally requires shipment within 30 days. Save the listing, seller name, order confirmation, promised delivery date, return policy, tracking details, and seller messages. Photograph damage or an incorrect item before repacking it.
Use a payment method with recourse
The FTC recommends safer payment methods such as credit cards when possible and warns against sellers who insist on gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency. Stay within the retailer or marketplace checkout, and keep order records in case you need to contact the seller, platform, or payment provider. See the FTC’s payment and shopping advice.
Watch for category-specific return traps
- Electronics and PC parts: Verify compatibility before opening, keep packaging, and learn whether the seller or manufacturer handles defects.
- Appliances, furniture, and building materials: Check delivery access, installation, damage inspection, restocking, freight, and pickup costs.
- Personalized goods: Confirm spelling, dimensions, color, and proof approval; custom-item returns may be limited.
- Clearance and special orders: Confirm whether returns are accepted before paying.
- Membership-club or price-match offers: Read exclusions for marketplace sellers, bundles, coupons, shipping differences, and limited quantities.
The strongest deal is not necessarily the lowest sticker price. It is the item from a seller you trust, at a fair delivered cost, with shipping and a return path you can accept.
