Microsoft Office 2024 Is Here: Should You Buy It or Subscribe to Microsoft 365?

Office 2024 is a one-time license for one computer; Microsoft 365 adds ongoing updates, multi-device use and cloud services. Choose based on how you work.

Office 2024 is already available, so the decision is no longer whether to try a preview. It is whether a one-time license for one computer is worth more to you than Microsoft 365’s ongoing app updates, multi-device access, OneDrive storage and connected services. For one PC or Mac and basic Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Office Home 2024 can make sense. If you need Outlook or commercial-use rights, look at Home & Business 2024. For multiple users or devices, cloud collaboration or the latest features, Microsoft 365 is usually the better fit.

Which Office option fits your needs?

Option Best fit What to weigh
Office Home 2024 One home or school user on one PC or Mac who wants Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote without a subscription. It excludes Outlook, commercial-use rights and Microsoft 365 cloud services; future major Office releases are not included.
Office Home & Business 2024 A freelancer or small-business user who needs Outlook and commercial-use rights on one computer. It remains a one-computer license, not a hosted email, administration or collaboration service.
Microsoft 365 Personal or Family Individuals or households using multiple devices, OneDrive, sharing and continuously updated apps. It is a recurring subscription; confirm current plan terms and pricing before buying.
Microsoft 365 business plans Organizations needing services such as hosted email, identity, Teams, SharePoint, administration or security features. Choose a plan based on whether desktop apps and the required services are included.
Office LTSC 2024 Organizations with volume licensing and controlled, regulated or disconnected deployments. It is not the ordinary consumer substitute for Microsoft 365 and does not get feature updates after launch.

Microsoft describes the one-time Office 2024 products as fixed-feature desktop suites, while Microsoft 365 includes those app capabilities plus ongoing updates and additional collaboration, productivity and security services. See Microsoft’s Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 FAQ.

What do the Office 2024 editions include?

Office Home 2024

Microsoft lists Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for one PC or Mac, for non-commercial home or school use. It does not include Outlook. Check the Office Home 2024 product page for current availability, terms and price.

Office Home & Business 2024

This one-time-purchase edition adds Outlook and permits home or commercial use on one PC or Mac. That distinction matters: the cheaper Home edition is not the appropriate choice for commercial work simply because its apps look similar. Microsoft’s product comparison lists its current Office and Microsoft 365 offerings.

  • Classic Office Apps | Includes classic desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with ease.

  • Consider Upgrading to Microsoft 365 | Get premium benefits with a Microsoft 365 subscription, including ongoing updates, advanced security, and access to premium versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more, plus 1TB cloud storage per person and multi-device support for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android.

Office LTSC 2024

LTSC is a separately licensed commercial edition for organizations that need a stable feature set and controlled deployment. Microsoft lists Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote, with Access on Windows; app availability varies by platform, and Publisher is not included. Microsoft says LTSC receives no feature updates after launch. Its LTSC overview explains the deployment model and supported configurations.

What did the preview mean?

The preview story was primarily about Office LTSC 2024, not a free early version of the normal consumer product. Microsoft announced a commercial preview for organizations assessing an on-premises release aimed at customers unable to take ongoing feature updates. A preview can be incomplete or contain bugs; it is not a signal that Microsoft 365 has become a one-time purchase. The historical announcement is at Microsoft’s LTSC 2024 preview post.

Office 2024 versus Microsoft 365

Consideration Office 2024 Microsoft 365
Payment One-time purchase for the selected edition. Recurring subscription.
Devices and users Consumer editions license one PC or Mac. Consumer plans support multiple devices and, for Family, multiple users subject to current plan terms.
Feature releases Stays on the 2024 feature set; a later major release is not included. Apps receive ongoing feature updates while the subscription is active.
Cloud storage No Microsoft 365 OneDrive allocation is included. Consumer plans include OneDrive storage; Microsoft describes 1 TB per person for applicable consumer subscription plans.
Outlook Included in Home & Business, not Home. Included in desktop-app consumer plans, with platform and plan differences.
Collaboration Can work with cloud-stored files, but the storage and account setup affect sharing and coauthoring. Designed around Microsoft’s cloud services and collaboration features.
Copilot and premium services Not generally included as part of the one-time apps. Availability depends on plan, eligibility and current product terms.

Office 2024 is not “Microsoft 365 without a subscription”: the familiar desktop apps overlap, but the subscription’s service layer, storage, update model and device terms are different. Compare current consumer plan details at Microsoft 365 plan comparison.

How to compare the cost fairly

Microsoft Store price snapshots have varied: research results included an older U.S. Office Home 2024 listing of $149.99 and a more recent listing of $179.99. Microsoft’s comparison page has shown consumer Microsoft 365 plans beginning at $9.99 per month, but plan, billing interval, promotions and packaging can change. These are not guaranteed current checkout prices. Check the live U.S. product pages before deciding.

TrulyOffice 2024 Family Lifetime License for Windows | 4 in 1 All Access TrulyOffice Suite | Words, Sheets, Slides, and Cloud | 5 Users | Physical Activation Card
  • Lifetime License for 5 Users: Perpetual access for 5 users to TrulyOffice 2024 on Window, ensuring a versatile 4-in-1 suite, catering to the needs of 5 users.
  • Digital Delivery: Please note that this product is not a physical CD. You will be delivered an activation code to access the software digitally. Compatible with Windows 7 or later and macOS 10.14 or later.
  • Activation Instructions: Detailed instructions for activating your software are included with the delivery. Follow these steps to download and install your product.
  • Full MS Office Compatibility and Comprehensive Productivity: Experience smooth collaboration with full compatibility with MSOffice, support for all major formats, and access to Words, Slides, Sheets, and Cloud with offline and premium features.
  • Offline Access, Premium Features and Cloud Access: Access Truly Words, Truly Sheets, Truly Slides and Truly Cloud offline with premium features; safeguard your files with secure cloud storage.

For a simple cash-cost comparison, divide the one-time Office price by the annual subscription price. Using the $179.99 Office snapshot and $99.99 per year as an illustrative annual Microsoft 365 price, the arithmetic break-even is about 1.8 years. Using the older $149.99 Office snapshot against the same annual figure gives about 1.5 years. This is not a total-value comparison: it assigns no value to OneDrive, extra devices, family sharing, support or future feature updates, and does not account for discounts or price changes.

A household should not compare one Office license against a shared subscription as if they cover the same people. Likewise, if you already pay for cloud storage, Microsoft 365’s included storage may replace some expense; if you do not use cloud storage, it may have little value. Review live pricing and billing terms at the Office Home 2024 page and Microsoft 365 comparison page.

What happens after you buy Office 2024?

You keep using the 2024 edition, but the purchase does not include the next major Office release. Security and quality updates are not the same as new features or an upgrade to a future version. If you want the next major version, you would normally need to buy it separately. The one-time apps also do not include Microsoft 365’s cloud-service bundle.

Support terms differ by product. Microsoft lists Office LTSC 2024 under the Fixed Lifecycle Policy, with support ending October 9, 2029. Consumer Office 2024 is covered under the Modern Lifecycle Policy, not that same fixed LTSC schedule. Do not apply the LTSC date to every consumer edition; consult the lifecycle FAQ for the distinction.

Will it work on your computer or offline?

Microsoft’s consumer product information lists Windows 10 and later compatibility. But Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025, so application compatibility is not the same as a supported, secure operating system. In 2026, buying Office for a Windows 10-only computer means accepting that operating-system risk.

Office 2024 is a locally installed desktop product, but do not interpret “one-time purchase” as “no internet or Microsoft account ever.” Installation, activation, licensing checks, updates and connected features may require connectivity. LTSC can suit managed environments that host updates internally, but exact activation and reactivation requirements depend on the deployment and license. Microsoft’s commercial Office requirements and connectivity information is relevant for organizations; LTSC requirements are detailed in its overview.

Who should buy Office 2024?

  • One-computer home or school user: Office Home 2024 is reasonable if Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote cover your needs, you do not need Outlook, and you prefer paying once.
  • Freelancer or small-business user: Consider Home & Business 2024 if Outlook and commercial-use rights on one computer are enough. If you need hosted email, shared mailboxes, administration or collaboration services, assess a business plan instead.
  • Stable, mostly offline workflow: A fixed app set may be appealing, though activation and some connected operations still involve internet access.
  • Existing Office user: Upgrade only if the new feature set or support status addresses a real need. Check add-ins, macros, templates and file workflows before changing editions.

Who should choose Microsoft 365?

  • Multi-device individual: A person moving between PC, Mac, tablet and phone can benefit from a subscription plan’s device access and synchronized files.
  • Family: Microsoft 365 Family may be a better comparison than buying separate one-device licenses when several people use Office. Confirm the current sharing limits and benefits.
  • Cloud collaborator: Choose the service model when OneDrive storage, sharing and real-time collaboration are central to the work.
  • Feature-conscious user: A subscription suits someone who wants continuing app feature releases or eligible premium services such as Copilot.
  • Business requiring a service stack: Compare Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Business Standard and Business Premium for email, identity, Teams, SharePoint, storage, security, administration and desktop app inclusion. See Microsoft’s business plan comparison.

When is Office LTSC 2024 the right answer?

LTSC is for organizations using volume licensing that need a controlled, stable deployment—for example, regulated or restricted environments, fixed-function devices or networks with limited connectivity. It trades cloud-first capabilities and continuous innovation for feature stability and centralized deployment control. Microsoft says organizations already using Microsoft 365 Apps generally do not need LTSC because Microsoft 365 Apps contains the LTSC feature set plus additional capabilities. See the LTSC deployment guidance and Microsoft Office licensing overview.

What if Microsoft Office is more than you need?

  • LibreOffice: A free locally installed suite; Microsoft-format fidelity and advanced Excel compatibility can vary. Visit LibreOffice.
  • Google Workspace: A cloud-first alternative built around Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail and Drive, suited to browser collaboration but not identical to native Office workflows. Visit Google Workspace.
  • Apple iWork: Pages, Numbers and Keynote fit Apple-centric use, but are not full replacements for advanced Word, Excel, Outlook or Access workflows. Visit Apple iWork.

If a school or employer provides Microsoft 365, check eligibility before paying for a personal license. Whichever route you choose, avoid unauthorized “lifetime Office” keys: they are not equivalent to Microsoft’s official licenses and can create activation, legitimacy, support and security risks.
