Johny Srouji did not announce that he was leaving Apple. In December 2025, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple’s chip leader was seriously considering an exit. Srouji told his organization he did not plan to leave “anytime soon.” On April 20, 2026, Apple named him chief hardware officer, giving him responsibility for both Hardware Engineering and Hardware Technologies.
What did the original report say?
In early December 2025, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Srouji had told CEO Tim Cook he was seriously considering leaving Apple in the near future. That was a report about a possible future departure—not a resignation announcement, formal notice, or confirmation that Srouji had decided to go. Thurrott’s coverage of the report and response summarizes the distinction.
The story appeared amid reports of wider turnover among Apple leaders. That context helps explain why a report about a senior executive attracted attention, but it does not mean Srouji left with other executives. His response and Apple’s later announcement point to a different outcome.
What did Srouji say about leaving?
In an internal message to his division, Srouji said: “I love my team, and I love my job at Apple, and I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon.” The wording directly rejected an imminent exit, but “anytime soon” is not a promise to remain at Apple indefinitely. The memo was reported by Thurrott and contemporaneous coverage collected by Techmeme.

What changed after the denial?
On April 20, 2026, Apple announced that Srouji had become chief hardware officer. His expanded remit includes both Hardware Engineering and Hardware Technologies. Apple said Hardware Technologies covers work including silicon, batteries, cameras, storage controllers, sensors, displays, cellular modems, and other hardware technologies. The appointment is the strongest public evidence that Srouji remained at Apple and was entrusted with broader responsibilities after the December report. Apple’s announcement does not say that the promotion resulted from the reported retention effort, so a direct causal link should not be assumed.
At the time of the December story, Srouji’s formal title was senior vice president of Hardware Technologies; “Apple Silicon chief” was shorthand, not his official title. Apple’s general leadership page appears to retain the older title, while the newer April 2026 newsroom announcement names him chief hardware officer. For the appointment and expanded remit, the dated newsroom release is the clearer first-party record.

Why does Srouji’s role matter?
Srouji joined Apple in 2008 and led development of the A4, Apple’s first internally designed system-on-chip, according to Apple’s biography. Before Apple, he held senior processor-development roles at Intel and IBM. His leadership has been associated with Apple’s move toward designing more of the silicon and hardware technologies used in its products.
The significance extends beyond a single chip launch. The organization he leads spans components and disciplines that can shape product road maps, hardware-software integration, and Apple’s efforts in areas such as cellular modems. Losing a senior leader with long experience across those teams could create continuity and talent-retention challenges. Those are plausible strategic risks, not confirmed outcomes: Apple’s public statements do not establish that the company would be unable to replace him or that any specific project would be disrupted by a departure.

What is confirmed, and what remains unknown?
- Confirmed by Srouji’s reported message: He said he did not plan to leave anytime soon.
- Confirmed by Apple: The company named him chief hardware officer on April 20, 2026, with an expanded remit.
- Reported, not publicly disclosed by Apple: Gurman’s sources said Cook was working to retain Srouji and was willing to offer substantial compensation and potentially more responsibility. Apple did not publish a compensation package or confirm those private negotiations.
- Not established publicly: Why Srouji was reportedly considering leaving, whether he had another offer, or whether discussions with Cook changed his plans. The promotion does not prove the original report was false; it establishes that he remained and took on a broader role afterward.
As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s April appointment is the latest strong public evidence of Srouji’s status in the available record. It supports the conclusion that the reported near-term departure did not happen, without resolving the private circumstances behind the December report.
