A working H&R Block homepage does not prove that sign-in, the tax-filing application, or e-file services are working normally, so avoid repeatedly clicking a filing or submission button while the site is unstable.
Start with the symptom

H&R Block’s CAPTCHA troubleshooting guidance recommends switching browsers and requesting a new CAPTCHA if the current one expired. It also says to save and quit in the current browser before switching.
Fix a blank or nonworking CAPTCHA
- Request a new challenge. Use the CAPTCHA’s refresh, reload, or new-code control if one is available. An expired challenge may no longer be accepted; repeatedly entering the same response is unlikely to help.
- Save and quit before changing browsers. If the return interface still lets you save, do that before leaving the session. H&R Block specifically recommends saving and quitting in the current browser before switching.
- Try another mainstream browser. Test a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. H&R Block’s CAPTCHA page recommends changing browsers and gives Firefox as an example when CAPTCHA is blank in Chrome. Do not treat older browser references on support pages as a recommendation to use an outdated browser.
- Open a private or incognito window. This can help distinguish a stale session, cookie, or extension conflict from a broader problem. H&R Block Canada’s documentation recommends incognito mode for some cache and login problems; that is general troubleshooting guidance from its Canadian product documentation, not proof of identical U.S. product behavior: H&R Block Canada’s incognito-mode instructions.
- Temporarily disable extensions that can interfere. Test with ad blockers, script or tracking blockers, VPN extensions, password-manager overlays, and antivirus web filters turned off. Re-enable security tools after the test. This is standard browser troubleshooting, not a confirmed diagnosis of H&R Block’s CAPTCHA.
- Check browser permissions. CAPTCHA widgets commonly need JavaScript, cookies, and images. Temporarily test whether those are allowed, or make a limited H&R Block-domain exception only if you understand the setting. Do not leave browser protections weakened unnecessarily.
- Hard-refresh the page. Browser shortcuts vary. H&R Block Canada lists
Ctrl+F5for Windows Chrome or Firefox,Ctrl+Shift+Rfor Windows Firefox, andCommand+Shift+Rfor Mac Chrome or Firefox. For Mac Safari it listsOption+Command+E, then reload. See its hard-refresh instructions; avoid clearing all saved browser data if a refresh will do. - Test a different trusted network or device. For example, compare home Wi-Fi with cellular data, or try another computer. This can help identify a local DNS, VPN, firewall, workplace-network, or ISP issue. Avoid entering tax information over public Wi-Fi unless the network is trusted and necessary.
Private browsing and clearing cookies can sign you out, and a browser change cannot repair an H&R Block server-side incident. If a browser test works, return to a normal, secure setup after identifying the likely cause.
Tell a local browser problem from a wider service issue
The homepage, authentication service, CAPTCHA provider, tax-return application, and e-file systems are separate components. One can work while another fails. A successful homepage load—or a third-party report that the main site responds—does not establish that every filing service is healthy.

Use this isolation test, changing one variable at a time:
- Try the same action in a private window.
- Try a second browser.
- Try a second device.
- If practical, try a different trusted network.
- Compare the homepage with the sign-in or tax-filing application.
- Check H&R Block’s official support page and help channels. An outage-reporting site can provide an additional signal, but not confirmation.

A third-party status page, UpdownRadar’s H&R Block status page, can be a rough indicator of site reachability or user reports, not an official statement or a health check for every H&R Block service. Do not conclude there is an outage from complaints alone, or conclude everything is functioning because the homepage responds.

If the CAPTCHA works but you still cannot sign in
Go to H&R Block’s official sign-in page through its own domain. H&R Block says usernames and passwords are case-sensitive. Its login troubleshooting guidance says credential recovery can use an email address, mobile number, or username. The recovery flow may send a security code and may offer “Try something else” if you cannot use the original email or phone. H&R Block also says three attempts to enter account-identification information can lead to account lookup.
Do not repeatedly reset a password unless the site identifies a credential problem. If a security code does not arrive, verify that you are using the contact information associated with the account and use the official recovery options rather than a link or number from an unsolicited message.

If H&R Block says your account is locked
H&R Block says an online account can lock after three failed login attempts and advises waiting 20 minutes before trying again. Follow its account-locked recovery instructions if waiting does not restore access. Recovery may require the email used for the program, the last five digits of your Social Security number, and answers to security questions.
- Stop guessing passwords once you suspect a lockout; further attempts may add friction.
- Use only the official H&R Block site for recovery.
- Never give your password, full Social Security number, or one-time security code to an unsolicited caller or unofficial support site.
If the return may already have been submitted
A frozen page or a click on “Submit,” “Transmit,” or “File” does not prove that a return was received—or that it failed. Avoid clicking again until you have checked the status. If the interface still permits saving without risking a second transmission, save your work first.

- Look for an H&R Block confirmation email, an official submission ID, or filing-status information in your account.
- Write down the error message, approximate time, browser, device, and what action you took.
- If there is no clear confirmation, contact H&R Block and ask whether the return transmitted before attempting another submission.
- Do not create a second account immediately; duplicate accounts can make it harder to find prior returns.
If a deadline is close, contact support promptly and keep a record of the problem and your support interaction. A website problem does not automatically extend a tax deadline; seek official tax or H&R Block guidance about your circumstances.

Contact H&R Block if the CAPTCHA fails in multiple browsers or devices, sign-in continues to loop after browser testing, an account is locked, a security code does not arrive, you cannot access a prior return, or you cannot determine whether a return was transmitted. - Online chat and phone hours: the support page lists 7:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday. Hours can change, so verify the current schedule there.
Use the support channel for the product you are using: Online, desktop software, or an office service. Do not trust a phone number in an unsolicited call, pop-up, or unofficial search result when you can verify contact details on H&R Block’s domain.
If the online service stays unavailable
If tests across devices and networks still fail, waiting and retrying later may be safer than repeated attempts—especially if you have recorded the error and avoided duplicate submissions. Depending on your situation, other routes include an H&R Block office, H&R Block desktop software, another tax-filing provider, an IRS-supported filing option if you are eligible, or printing and mailing a return.
These are alternatives, not guaranteed workarounds. Switching providers may mean re-entering tax information, and it may not resolve an identity-verification or IRS-system issue. Before changing routes, consider how much work is already in your H&R Block return and confirm that you can access or transfer the information safely. Mailing also has different processing and proof-of-mailing considerations; do not assume a website problem changes a deadline.
