The biggest gains come not from adding a storefront alone, but from making account-specific prices, products, availability, checkout, and service work together reliably. That requires clear data ownership across Salesforce, ERP, PIM, tax, shipping, payment, and fulfillment systems.
This guide explains how to design that operating model, improve high-value B2B buying tasks, and decide whether Salesforce is the right fit. Product capabilities, licensing, and packaging vary by edition and configuration; verify them against your Salesforce contract and implementation requirements.
What Salesforce B2B Commerce does well
Salesforce B2B Commerce is designed for business buyers whose online experience depends on their account relationship: who they are, what they may buy, what price applies, and how an order fits into sales and service processes. Documented capabilities include buyer accounts and groups, catalogs, customer-specific pricing, carts, checkout, search, order management, subscriptions, and shared B2B and D2C operations in a Salesforce org. The documented supported editions are Enterprise, Unlimited, and Developer, subject to the specific product and licensing configuration. Salesforce’s B2B Commerce overview describes the platform scope.
Commerce capabilities are not all automatically available in every org. Release-dependent features, licenses, implementation choices, and integrations affect what a business can use. Salesforce’s Spring ’26 release notes describe B2B enhancements such as quote requests from the cart, pricing-context extensions, configurable products, buyer-eligibility rules, larger searchable catalogs, subscriptions, and multilingual guided shopping. Check the applicable release and org configuration before making those features part of a project scope. Salesforce Spring ’26 Commerce release notes

The optimization goal is broader than page speed. A useful B2B experience helps buyers find the right product, see the right commercial terms, place repeat orders with less effort, and get clear answers when pricing, stock, tax, or delivery cannot be confirmed. It should also reduce avoidable sales interventions, incorrect orders, and support work.
Map system ownership before connecting systems
Decide which system is authoritative for each business domain before choosing connectors or building synchronization. Copying the same facts into several systems without an owner and conflict rule creates disagreements: a buyer can see one price in the storefront and another on an ERP order, for example. Salesforce can coordinate customer-facing commerce, but that does not make it the correct master for every operational record.
| Data domain | Likely authoritative system | Salesforce’s usual role |
|---|---|---|
| Accounts, contacts, sales relationships | CRM | Customer and account context for commerce, sales, and service |
| Product master and technical attributes | PIM or ERP | Commerce catalog projection and buyer-facing product information |
| Contract and negotiated pricing | ERP, CPQ, or Salesforce pricing, depending on the business | Price books, buyer groups, and pricing-service integration |
| Inventory and availability | ERP, WMS, or inventory platform | Storefront availability, live or near-real-time where configured |
| Tax | Tax provider or tax engine | Checkout orchestration and result display |
| Shipping and freight | Carrier, TMS, or shipping engine | Delivery options and rate integration |
| Payment authorization | Payment gateway | Payment flow, tokenization, authorization, and exception handling as supported |
| Fulfillment and shipment status | OMS, ERP, or WMS | Order-status visibility and service context |
| Marketing consent and engagement | Marketing Cloud, Data 360, or another governed consent source | Segmentation and activation within permitted use |
| Customer support | Service Cloud or designated service system | Case and order context for support |
For every data flow, document its source of truth, owner, direction, update frequency, conflict-resolution rule, audit requirement, and customer-visible fallback. Salesforce publishes B2B storefront APIs for areas including addresses, carts, checkout, imports, profiles, order summaries, pricing and promotions, search settings, tax, and wishlists. Use the documentation for the specific API and version rather than assuming a universal endpoint or payload. Salesforce B2B and D2C storefront APIs
Choose an integration pattern for each type of data
One architecture rarely suits every data domain. Stable product descriptions can tolerate scheduled updates; a buyer’s final contract price or tax result may need a current calculation. Salesforce’s integration documentation describes checkout-related services and asynchronous integration work, but the exact design depends on the storefront, provider, and business requirement. Salesforce integration architecture for LWR
Batch synchronization
Use scheduled imports for relatively stable data such as catalog content, base prices, historical orders, and lower-volatility account attributes. Batch processes can be efficient, but buyers may see stale inventory or delayed price changes; partial failures can also leave duplicate or incomplete records. Include load validation, external IDs, and a recovery procedure.
Event-driven integration
Events suit changes that matter soon after they occur, such as inventory adjustments, order-status updates, shipment events, account approval, or product and price changes. Consumers must tolerate duplicate and out-of-order messages. Define replay behavior, monitoring, and a dead-letter or escalation path before relying on events for customer-visible status.

Synchronous API calls
Call external services when a current result is important at a decision point, such as contract pricing, availability, tax, freight rates, or payment authorization. This can improve accuracy, but adds response time and makes checkout dependent on the service’s uptime, limits, and latency. Define timeouts and failure behavior instead of allowing a stalled request to become an unexplained checkout hang.
Use a hybrid pattern where it fits
A practical default is to replicate stable catalog and account data, retrieve volatile price, inventory, tax, or freight data when accuracy matters, and process order and fulfillment updates asynchronously. Cache volatile values only when the business has explicitly decided how stale they may be. For each customer-facing value, distinguish live, estimated, and cached information.
Salesforce currently recommends Commerce extensions over older checkout-integration patterns for targeted customizations such as pricing, inventory, shipping, and tax. The older integration framework remains supported, but extensions are the preferred direction in current developer guidance. Salesforce Commerce integration architecture and checkout integration documentation explain the relevant patterns. Middleware such as MuleSoft may help with orchestration, transformation, and governance in a complex landscape, but it is not mandatory for every implementation. Salesforce notes that some organizations may need MuleSoft, an integration partner, or marketplace apps for systems without built-in integration. Salesforce B2B Commerce pricing and packaging information
Make integrations observable and safe to retry
- Use secure credential management, including named credentials where appropriate.
- Assign external IDs to synchronized records and idempotency keys to order, payment, and fulfillment operations.
- Correlate requests across the storefront, Salesforce, middleware, and ERP with a traceable request identifier.
- Set timeouts and circuit breakers for external tax, freight, inventory, and payment calls.
- Separate buyer-facing messages from technical diagnostics; give support staff enough detail to investigate.
- Build retry and dead-letter handling for asynchronous events, and reconcile orders and payments on a defined schedule.
- Test partial failures, duplicate messages, and recovery—not only successful transactions.
Make pricing and product data dependable
Put pricing authority and rules in writing
B2B buyers often judge a storefront by whether it honors negotiated terms. Define whether Salesforce or an external pricing engine owns the final price, and account for base price books, buyer-group or account pricing, contract terms, quantity breaks, currency and region, promotions, eligibility, overrides, and effective dates. Decide how to display quote-required or call-for-price items and whether displayed prices include tax.
Salesforce supports price books, pricing strategies, and custom pricing providers. Its setup guidance notes that a physical product needs an appropriate price-book entry for pricing to appear on category and search pages. Salesforce B2B pricing setup The pricing and promotions APIs support product and cart pricing, promotions, product-listing and detail pages, cart changes, coupons, and checkout calculations. Salesforce pricing and promotions APIs
- Decide which system owns the final price and how the storefront receives it.
- Reprice the cart at the point required by the business; do not treat a stale cached price as final when contract pricing can change.
- Test quantity-break boundaries, effective-date transitions, account switching, and buyer-group changes.
- Test missing base prices, expired records, and conflicting price books.
- Where commercially appropriate, explain why prices differ by account or quantity.
- Retain the price source and timestamp with the order so discrepancies can be investigated.
Model a catalog for procurement, not just browsing
Many business buyers search by SKU, manufacturer part number, specification, or internal procurement code. Product data should include governed identifiers, variants, units of measure, case-pack and pallet quantities, minimum and maximum order quantities, substitutions, technical documents, safety and compliance information, and discontinued-product replacements. Customer-specific assortments and eligibility rules should be clear and consistent with account permissions.

Improve checkout without creating avoidable maintenance
Checkout is where pricing, address, inventory, tax, freight, procurement, and payment rules converge. The design should make those dependencies understandable to the buyer and recoverable for operations.
Choose managed or custom checkout deliberately
Salesforce distinguishes managed checkout from custom checkout. Managed checkout integrates Salesforce merchant services and receives automatic updates to the checkout UI, but does not support checkout customization. Salesforce recommends custom checkout when a business needs to customize the experience or use third-party providers. Salesforce checkout solution guidance
| Approach | Useful when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Managed checkout | The supported Salesforce flow meets payment and process needs, and limited customization is acceptable. | Less control over checkout UI and workflow; it is not the path for custom checkout behavior. |
| Custom checkout | Procurement steps, payment terms, third-party tax or shipping, approvals, or other required workflows go beyond the managed flow. | More development, testing, upgrade responsibility, and risk of security or accessibility defects. |
Do not customize checkout solely for visual preference. A custom flow should solve a defined buyer or operational requirement and have an owner for release testing and maintenance.
Verify payment support against the actual configuration
Salesforce documents B2B payment integration through the Commerce payment framework, Payment Gateway, and payment adapters. Its documented B2B flow has a limitation: it does not yet support multiple payment methods or sale transactions. Confirm current support against the organization’s exact edition, package, geography, and provider configuration before committing to a payment design. Salesforce B2B payment integration
Payment options include Salesforce Payments, AppExchange payment packages, or a custom gateway integration; availability and interoperability depend on the specific B2B Commerce and Order Management configuration. Salesforce payment gateway options A marketplace listing is not a substitute for reviewing fees, geography, data handling, support, upgrade compatibility, and whether the package supports the intended B2B flow.
Make tax, shipping, and availability failures actionable
Address validation, multiple delivery groups, freight rules, customer-specific shipping agreements, pickup, tax exemptions, backorders, partial availability, warehouse selection, split shipments, and cut-off times can all affect the order. Set a timeout and fallback for every external result needed to place an order. Do not silently use stale tax, inventory, or freight data; tell buyers whether a value is current, estimated, or pending confirmation.

Design around frequent B2B buying tasks
Optimize the workflows buyers repeat, not only the storefront home page. A distributor’s buyer may need to rebuild last month’s order, check a contract price, split delivery across locations, or submit a purchase order for approval. Useful functions include quick order, reordering from history, saved requisition lists, buyer invitations and roles, account switching, quote requests, purchase orders, approvals, invoice and shipment status, and clear escalation to customer service.
Test account switching and buyer permissions as security controls, not merely interface details. A buyer must not see another account’s price, catalog, order, or data through a direct URL, API request, cached page, or changed account context. Include negative authorization tests in every release.

Personalize with account context and consent
Useful personalization is account-aware: it may draw on buyer role, industry, contract, purchase history, installed equipment, service history, territory, eligibility, inventory location, or sales opportunity. The storefront should not recommend an item the buyer cannot purchase or expose a price belonging to another account.
Salesforce states that Marketing Cloud and Data 360 can be used with B2B Commerce for customer messaging, marketing consents, and related commerce activity. Check licensing, packaging, and total cost
Salesforce’s documented supported editions for B2B Commerce are Enterprise, Unlimited, and Developer, but the exact product family, contract, and license model matter. Its licensing guidance describes B2B licenses based on GMV or orders placed and says certain license types cannot be mixed. Buyer managers or buyers who need access to other buyers, role-based sharing, reports, and other objects may require Customer Community Plus or a higher Experience Cloud license. Confirm the requirements for the actual org and buyer model. Salesforce B2B Commerce licensing guidance
As of the Salesforce pricing page observed in August 2026, B2B Growth was listed as contact for pricing with six storefronts and Order Management Lite; B2B Advanced was listed as contact for pricing with ten storefronts and full Order Management. Salesforce described pricing as including a percentage of GMV based on functionality required and listed Premier Success Plan at 30% of net license fees. Those are page-level packaging signals, not a complete quote for a particular business. License, GMV, order volume, storefronts, Order Management, Data Cloud, support, middleware, implementation, and partner costs can materially affect total cost. Salesforce B2B Commerce pricing
Do not assume an integration platform is required, or that an advertised license figure represents the full operating cost. Include build and support effort, monitoring, data remediation, releases, and the cost of maintaining custom code in the decision.

| Option | Reason to consider | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| Salesforce B2B Commerce | Strong customer, account, sales, and service context for an organization already centered on Salesforce. | Quote-based packaging and potentially complex total cost; integration and governance still require deliberate design. |
| Shopify Plus B2B | Hosted commerce and a combined B2B/DTC model with curated catalogs, price lists, payment terms, and a self-service portal described on its product page. | May be less suited to unusually deep Salesforce-native account, service, CPQ, or ERP-led procurement orchestration. Plus pricing is not shown as a public standard figure on the cited page. |
| BigCommerce | Hosted commerce with public entry pricing and B2B capabilities for businesses seeking an alternative to the Salesforce ecosystem. | Salesforce-centered organizations may need additional integration work. The pricing page has plan, GMV, and billing conditions; compare the applicable billing view and conditions rather than treating one figure as universal. |
| commercetools | API-first composable commerce for organizations with engineering capacity seeking granular control of the stack. | More architecture and engineering responsibility than a mostly preconfigured Salesforce-native implementation; public pricing does not provide one universal dollar figure. |

Quick Recap
Salesforce is more likely to fit when
- Sales, service, customer, and commerce data should share a Salesforce foundation.
- Account relationships and customer-specific pricing are central to online ordering.
- Sales representatives need useful visibility into online behavior and orders.
- The business wants connected service and commerce context or shared B2B and D2C processes.
- The organization can support Salesforce administration and integration development.
Consider another platform when
- The business does not already use Salesforce and mainly needs a simple wholesale storefront.
- Public pricing is sufficient and account-specific workflow is limited.
- The team lacks Salesforce skills or implementation support.
- Extensive checkout freedom is essential and the organization is unwilling to maintain custom code.
- An ERP or PIM must remain the dominant experience and Salesforce would duplicate its role.
- GMV-based commercial terms or unsupported payment requirements do not fit the business model.
A practical implementation sequence
- Map the buyer’s top five tasks. Identify what buyers need to do most often, where they fail, and which actions currently require a representative.
- Assign data ownership. Name the authoritative system, owner, synchronization direction, conflict rule, and customer-facing fallback for each domain.
- Choose freshness by business risk. Replicate stable data, call external systems for volatile decisions when necessary, and use asynchronous events for order and fulfillment updates.
- Configure standard capabilities first. Validate account, catalog, price-book, buyer-group, and checkout behavior before adding custom code.
- Use extensions or APIs for specific gaps. Define a stable contract and failure behavior for each custom integration instead of scattering logic across the storefront.
- Add observability and reconciliation. Correlate requests, handle retries safely, and reconcile orders and payments before scaling traffic.
- Measure task completion and accuracy. Compare buyer effort, conversion, discrepancies, cancellations, and support workload against a baseline.
- Revisit platform fit. If integration and operating costs outweigh the value of a unified Salesforce context, compare alternatives against the same workflows and data requirements.
