Perplexity did announce a plan to share advertising revenue with publishers, and it tested ads in the United States in late 2024. But that is not the whole current story: in 2025, the company introduced Comet Plus, a subscription-based model that allocates revenue to participating publishers for human visits, AI citations and agent actions. Reports in 2026 said Perplexity had stepped back from advertising, though that change has not been confirmed in the company announcement cited here.

What the original ad and revenue-share plan promised
The initial Publishers’ Program named Automattic, Der Spiegel, Entrepreneur, Fortune, The Texas Tribune and TIME among its partners. Perplexity described benefits including a share of revenue when partner content was used in a monetized interaction, API access, developer support and Enterprise Pro access for employees.
Perplexity said publishers would not receive preferential ranking in answers. It also acknowledged that sending publishers Google-like volumes of referral traffic was not the program’s central offer: direct compensation was meant to address AI search interactions that might not produce a conventional click. TechCrunch’s account of the program reported the company’s description of a “double-digit” revenue share.
How the proposed ad payment would work
- A user asks a question and Perplexity uses or cites publisher material in its answer.
- An advertisement is associated with that interaction.
- A participating publisher receives a share of the advertising revenue, under terms not publicly detailed in the coverage cited here.
In November 2024, the initial ad format was a labeled “sponsored follow-up question” shown alongside an answer, rather than a conventional banner. Perplexity said advertisers would not write or edit AI-generated answers and would not receive users’ personal information. Those are company statements, not independent evidence that commercial influence can never affect an answer. TechCrunch reported the experiment.

What publishers still cannot calculate from the public terms
“Double-digit” sounds specific, but it does not tell a publisher what a payment will be. The public description does not establish whether the percentage applies to gross ad revenue, net revenue or a separate pool, nor does it provide a complete allocation formula.
#1 Best Overall
- Whether a payment is triggered by citation, source prominence, impressions, clicks, conversions or a combination.
- How revenue is divided when several publishers contribute to one answer.
- Whether rates vary by publisher, region, query or ad format.
- How a publisher can audit uses, citations and payments.
- Whether inaccurate citations or summaries affect payment.
- Whether the arrangement covers only answer use or also crawling, training, reproduction or other uses.
A revenue-sharing arrangement is not automatically a traditional content license, model-training license, minimum-payment guarantee or promise of traffic. Those rights and obligations depend on the specific agreement; the public announcement does not settle them.
How Comet Plus broadened the compensation model
Perplexity’s August 2025 Comet Plus announcement framed publisher value more broadly than the earlier ad plan. The company said the $5 monthly subscription would distribute revenue to participating publishers for three categories: human visits, citations in AI search and actions carried out by AI agents. Perplexity said it would retain a small amount for platform-computing costs. The announcement does not establish a universal publisher percentage or a detailed payment formula. This model treats some AI use as valuable even when it does not look like a traditional pageview. An agent may inspect content or take an action on a publisher site without a person arriving, reading an article and generating an ordinary advertising impression. That makes agent activity a potentially important new compensation category, but the public announcement does not explain how individual actions are valued or verified.
Comet Plus is best understood from the available terms as a subscription-funded publisher-compensation model, not proof that every publisher’s material is licensed or that every use is paid. Perplexity directed interested publishers to [email protected].

Why publishers may see both opportunity and risk
AI search can provide a synthesized answer without sending a reader to the original article. That threatens referral traffic, advertising impressions and opportunities to convert readers into subscribers. Perplexity’s program responds to that gap by proposing direct compensation, but the size of any payment relative to displaced audience value is not established by the public information cited here.
The program also emerged amid publisher concerns about scraping, attribution and reproducing material too closely. A partnership can offer a negotiated relationship and potential compensation, while also helping Perplexity secure content relationships and credibility. That business benefit is an inference from the program’s design, not a disclosed statement of motive. Revenue sharing alone does not resolve copyright, consent, attribution or accuracy disputes.

Questions publishers should get answered in writing
- What content and uses are covered, and are model training and agent actions included or excluded?
- Is there a minimum payment, and is the calculation based on gross or net revenue?
- How are multiple sources credited and paid, including syndicated reporting?
- Can the publisher audit citations, activity and payment calculations?
- What happens when an answer misquotes, misattributes or inaccurately summarizes an article?
- What rights end if the publisher withdraws, and does withdrawal stop crawling, citation, training or only payment eligibility?
- How are paywalled material and agent actions handled?
What advertisers and users should take from the ad experiment
Sponsored follow-up questions put advertising inside a high-intent question-and-answer experience. That may be relevant to categories such as travel, employment, shopping, education and product research, but the cited reports do not establish campaign scale, standardized measurement or durable availability. Reports of a later ad wind-down add uncertainty for advertisers considering continuity.

It is whether commercial relationships affect which sources appear, how an answer is phrased or which follow-up questions are suggested. Perplexity said brands would not write or edit answers, but that policy claim is not the same as independently auditable proof of neutrality.
