Short answer: Semrush was a capable choice for connecting SEO research with content planning and optimization, but it made the most sense when buyers used its broader SEO platform. It was difficult to justify for AI writing alone. This review assesses the 2024-era product landscape and separately identifies current product and pricing information observed on August 16, 2026; the current Content Toolkit is not assumed to be identical to 2024’s ContentShake AI.
Verdict at a glance
| Area | Verdict |
|---|---|
| SEO research | Broad, with content work connected to keyword, competitor, SERP, backlink, and site-audit data. |
| Content ideation and briefs | Useful for finding and structuring opportunities, provided a person validates intent and adds an original angle. |
| AI drafting | Can accelerate outlines and first drafts; it does not replace subject expertise, fact-checking, or editing. |
| On-page guidance | Helpful for checking SEO, readability, originality, and tone, but a score is not a ranking guarantee. |
| Ease of use | Powerful, though the number of tools, product names, subscriptions, and limits can be confusing. |
| Value | Strongest when several SEO and content functions are used together; weak if the only need is occasional AI writing. |
| Best suited to | SEO teams, agencies, and serious publishers with recurring research, optimization, and reporting needs. |
| Usually excessive for | Casual bloggers and buyers who need only a simple writing assistant or basic keyword ideas. |
For a finance-minded buyer, the central question is not whether Semrush has many features; it is whether the work those features replace or improve is valuable enough to justify the total subscription and any add-ons.
What “Semrush” meant for content in 2024
Semrush was not one content-writing product. Its broader SEO Toolkit covered research and measurement, while several content-specific tools addressed different stages of production. The 2024 annual report describes Pro, Guru, and Business subscription levels, with Business adding capabilities such as API access, expanded usage limits, and share-of-voice metrics; that is useful context for the broader platform, not a complete price list for every content tool. Semrush 2024 Annual Report.
- SEO Toolkit: The broad platform for keyword and competitor research, rank tracking, backlink analysis, and technical site audits. Content recommendations become more useful when the buyer also uses this data.
- Topic Research and SEO Content Template: Research and briefing functions intended to help identify topics and turn a target keyword or subject into content guidance.
- ContentShake AI: A distinct paid content product being promoted in 2024, closer to topic ideation, briefing, and AI-assisted production than a general SEO suite. A Semrush offer ran from April 29, 2024, at 5:00 a.m. Central Time through May 13, 2024, at 5:00 a.m. Central Time, offering eligible users 25% off a six-month subscription. The terms excluded users with a paid Semrush service or active trial at the relevant time, subject to detailed eligibility conditions. This promotion establishes that it was sold as a distinct product; it does not establish its normal 2024 list price. Offer terms.
- SEO Writing Assistant: An editor-oriented tool for assessing drafts. Semrush describes it as checking SEO, readability, originality, and tone of voice, with recommendations in supported editors. SEO Writing Assistant documentation.
These tools address different jobs and should not be treated as one included, unlimited product. Access, allowances, and packaging depend on the product and plan. The available evidence does not establish a complete, reliable 2024 price schedule for each combination.

How Semrush fits into a content workflow
The platform is most useful when it informs a complete editorial process rather than being treated as an automatic article factory.
- Set the audience and business goal. Decide who the article serves, what question it answers, and whether the goal is awareness, qualified traffic, leads, or sales.
- Research the topic and market. Use keyword and competitor data to generate possibilities, selecting the appropriate country and language database. Search demand and intent can differ by market.
- Inspect the search results yourself. Review what currently ranks, what searchers appear to need, and where existing pages fall short. Tool-generated topic suggestions do not substitute for customer research, first-party performance data, or judgment about intent.
- Build and edit a brief. Use recommendations as a starting point, then add the audience, conversion goal, original angle, evidence requirements, internal links, product context, and expert-review needs. A brief built only by imitating competitor pages can lead to interchangeable content.
- Draft selectively. AI can help with ideation, an outline, or a first draft. It should not be presumed to create publishable expert material.
- Add what the tool cannot supply. Include reliable evidence, first-hand experience where appropriate, examples, expert judgment, and details that distinguish the article from competing pages.
- Optimize with editorial judgment. Use the Writing Assistant to notice possible gaps in terminology, readability, or tone, not as a command to maximize a numerical score.
- Fact-check and review originality. Verify claims, statistics, citations, product details, and recommendations. Review originality-related results according to the limits of the applicable plan.
- Publish and measure outcomes. Track search performance and business results, then update the article based on actual first-party data. Semrush can inform research and measurement, but it cannot guarantee rankings or conversions.
Feature-by-feature assessment
Topic discovery: useful signal, not editorial strategy
Semrush’s content tools connect topic ideas to search and competitor data, which can help a publisher prioritize subjects and questions. Its current Content Toolkit page describes data-driven ideas and SEO content boosts, but those current features should not be projected backward as proof of the exact 2024 product. Current Content Toolkit pricing and features.
Topic lists are strongest when used to identify opportunities for further investigation. They cannot tell a publisher what customers need, whether a topic fits the business, or what original evidence will make a page useful. The person choosing the topic still needs to judge intent and inspect the results.
Brief creation: a time-saver that needs an editor
A brief can gather related terms, readability guidance, and competitor-informed direction in one place. That can reduce manual setup for a writer or agency. Its weakness is the same as any competitor-derived template: matching the average of existing pages can produce a page that is complete-looking but offers little new value.

Before a writer starts, an editor should specify the intended reader, the answer the page must deliver, sources or evidence to collect, internal links, conversion context, and any subject-matter review. Those decisions matter more than filling every suggested subtopic.
ContentShake AI and AI-assisted drafting
ContentShake AI was a separate paid product in the 2024 landscape, as the dated promotion terms show. Current Semrush content pages describe AI-assisted article creation based on keyword and prompt information, but product names and packaging have changed. Current features are not evidence that ContentShake AI had the same tools, allowances, or plan structure in 2024. Current content-creation positioning.
AI drafting is most defensible for reducing blank-page friction: generating an outline, proposing angles, or producing material for an experienced editor to reshape. It is not equivalent to producing an accurate, distinctive, publication-ready article. Check for unsupported claims, fabricated citations, outdated details, repetitive phrasing, unnatural keyword use, and missing experience. Semrush’s own SEO Writing Assistant guidance advises reviewing AI-generated content before publication. SEO Writing Assistant documentation.
SEO Writing Assistant: practical checks, not a quality verdict
The assistant evaluates SEO, readability, originality, and tone, and offers recommendations while a user works in supported editors. It can help identify underused terms, readability issues, or a mismatch in tone. It cannot establish that an article satisfies search intent, demonstrates expertise, or will rank. Search engines, reader satisfaction, backlinks, brand authority, technical performance, and changing results pages remain outside the control of a content score.
Rank #3
Current support documentation lists plan-dependent allowances, including document, plagiarism-check, and Smart Writer Word limits. It specifies three plagiarism checks in total per Pro account, five per month for Guru, and ten per month for Business; Smart Writer Word allowances are 500 words lifetime for Pro, 1,000 words per month for Guru, and 2,000 words per month for Business. These are current documented limits, not verified 2024 allowances. Current limits and feature documentation.
Publishing, browser access, and repurposing
Semrush’s current content-marketing pages describe browser-based writing assistance, CMS publishing, and repurposing into formats such as social posts and email newsletters. These are current product descriptions and should not be assumed to document the 2024 feature set. Current content-marketing workflow.
Pricing: what can and cannot be said about 2024
Semrush’s 2024 pricing cannot be responsibly reduced to one verified monthly figure from the evidence available here. Prices can vary by product, plan, billing cycle, geography, and promotion; the 2024 ContentShake AI discount was temporary and eligibility-limited, not a normal list price. Do not use a current price as if it were the historical price of the SEO Toolkit, ContentShake AI, or SEO Writing Assistant.
As a separate present-day reference, Semrush’s Content Toolkit pricing page listed a Base plan at $60 per month billed annually on August 16, 2026. The same page listed up to 10,000 articles and five SEO content boosts per month, along with AI and SEO optimization and brand-voice functionality. This is a dated price signal for that current product, not a universal Semrush price or a confirmed 2024 price. Content Toolkit pricing page.
Rank #4
The same page showed current add-ons of $20 per month for additional users, $90 per month for Lead Generation, $10 per month for Base Report, and $20 per month for Pro Report. These are prices observed on August 16, 2026, not verified historical amounts. Buyers should confirm billing cadence, taxes, included users, account and project limits, and the specific tool access before committing. Current add-ons and plan details.
The current subscription documentation describes the Content Toolkit as including Topic Finder, SEO Brief Generator, Article Generator, optimization, a Chrome extension, CMS publishing, and brand-voice functionality. This present-day lineup is not proof of the 2024 ContentShake AI bundle. Current subscription documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When Semrush is worth paying for
Solo blogger or small publisher
Consider Semrush if the site publishes regularly and the owner will use keyword research, competitor analysis, audits, and content planning—not merely occasional AI drafts. If the need is limited to a handful of ideas or drafts, a large subscription is likely difficult to justify.
Freelance SEO writer
It can be useful when clients expect keyword-informed briefs and optimization recommendations. The economics are less attractive if the freelancer needs only an editor or must pay for access to a broader platform they do not otherwise use. Clarify who supplies the subscription, how client work is shared, and which limits apply.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
In-house SEO team or ecommerce brand
The case strengthens when the team needs connected keyword, competitor, technical, and content work across a continuing publishing program. Ecommerce teams should still validate product-specific intent and conversion performance rather than equating more search terms with better commercial outcomes.
Content agency
Agencies may benefit from recurring research, project organization, reporting, and shared SEO workflows. Before buying, map the intended number of users, client projects, reports, and checks to actual plan limits and add-ons. A feature list alone does not show whether the needed workflow is available at the quoted price.
Enterprise marketing team
A broader platform can be relevant where teams need expanded usage, API access, share-of-voice reporting, or coordinated SEO work; Semrush’s 2024 annual report identifies such distinctions for the Business tier. Enterprise buyers should validate current terms, security, access, and workflow requirements directly rather than assume that a historical tier description represents a current contract.
When to skip Semrush or choose another tool
- You only want AI-written blog drafts: Semrush’s broader data and workflow may be wasted if drafting is the only job.
- You publish infrequently: Occasional content is unlikely to use enough of the platform to support its cost.
- You need only a focused content optimizer: Surfer or Clearscope may be a more direct evaluation when keyword and backlink research are already handled elsewhere.
- You need briefs and AI content, not a full SEO suite: Frase is a content-centered alternative to assess.
- You prioritize broad backlink and competitor research: Ahrefs is a direct broad-SEO alternative to compare.
- You need lower-cost all-in-one SEO: SE Ranking may suit smaller teams, though database coverage and content functions should be checked for the target market.
- You need first-party performance data: Google Search Console and Google Analytics are essential free complements, but neither replaces competitor databases, keyword discovery, or content briefs.
Official product pages: Ahrefs, Surfer, Clearscope, Frase, SE Ranking, Google Search Console, and Google Analytics. Alternative prices are not compared here; verify current official pricing and limits before purchasing.

Quick Recap
How to decide before subscribing
- List the jobs you expect the platform to handle: research, briefing, drafting, editing, tracking, audits, or reporting.
- Identify the exact product and plan that unlocks each job; do not treat ContentShake AI, SEO Writing Assistant, the Content Toolkit, and SEO Toolkit as interchangeable names.
- Estimate actual monthly usage, including documents, words, plagiarism checks, users, projects, reports, and API needs where relevant.
- Compare the full recurring cost and billing term with a specialist tool or a smaller SEO platform that covers the same required tasks.
- Trial the workflow on a real article: check whether it saves enough research and editing time without making the result more generic.
