Samsung Led Europe’s Smartphone Market in 2023. Did Canalys’s 2024 Rebound Forecast Hold Up?

Samsung held Europe’s smartphone shipment lead during the 2023 downturn. Canalys forecast a 2024 rebound, but later reporting showed a slower recovery.

Samsung led Europe’s smartphone shipment market in Q3 2023, but that did not mean the market was healthy: shipments were falling, including Samsung’s. Canalys forecast a 7% recovery in 2024. Later reporting put the increase at about 5%, making the forecast a near miss rather than a failed call.

What Canalys reported for Europe in Q3 2023

In figures attributed to Canalys, Europe excluding Russia shipped 32 million smartphones in Q3 2023, 6% fewer than a year earlier. It was the market’s tenth consecutive quarterly year-over-year decline. The figures describe devices shipped into the channel, not a count of phones consumers bought or currently use. Contemporaneous coverage of Canalys’s Q3 findings reported the following vendor positions:

Vendor Q3 2023 reported position Reported shipment detail
Samsung First; 35% share Shipments reportedly down 6% year over year
Apple Second; 22% share Not stated in the cited report
Xiaomi Third; 19% share 6.2 million shipments
Motorola Fast-growing challenger Shipments up 30% year over year
TCL Top-five vendor About 800,000 shipments, up 5%

These are reported regional shipment shares and growth rates for one quarter, not evidence that Samsung or any other vendor led every European country or earned the most revenue. The contemporaneous article named the Galaxy S23 Ultra, S23, A14, A53 and A33 as important Samsung models; that list is illustrative, not a verified Europe-wide bestseller ranking.

Why Samsung could lead while its shipments fell

A market leader can lose shipments and retain first place if rivals remain smaller or decline more sharply. Samsung’s position also reflected range: Galaxy A phones competed in mass-market price bands while Galaxy S models targeted premium buyers, supported by the company’s carrier and retail presence. That mix gave it more routes to volume than a vendor concentrated in a narrower price tier.

The ranking alone does not establish profitability. Premium phones may generate different revenue and margins from lower-priced models, but shipment share provides neither a vendor’s average selling price nor its profit. Nor does regional leadership imply national dominance: later reporting described Apple as substantially ahead of Samsung in the UK and Xiaomi as stronger than Apple in Spain. Those country examples are secondary-source reports, not a complete country-by-country ranking. The 2024 market coverage also points to competition from Motorola and Oppo in selected markets.

How deep was the downturn before the forecast?

Annual figures attributed to Canalys put Europe’s 2023 smartphone shipments, excluding Russia, at 129.8 million, down from 140.8 million in 2022—a decline of about 7.8%. Convergencia Latina’s report on the full-year figures provides that comparison. Against this backdrop, a rebound meant a return to shipment growth after a prolonged contraction, not necessarily a return to the earlier peak or a comparable rise in consumer spending.

What Canalys forecast for 2024

The late-2023 forecast called for European smartphone shipments to rise 7% in 2024. The rationale discussed at the time included replacement demand after consumers held onto pandemic-era phones, more normalized inventory, economic stabilization and new premium launches. Those are plausible supports for shipments, not guarantees that households would spend 7% more or that every country and price segment would grow at the same rate.

Launch timing matters. Samsung’s Galaxy S launches can support shipments earlier in the year, while Apple’s late-year iPhone cycle can shift Q4 rankings. Retail promotions, trade-ins, carrier installments and stock levels also influence how many devices manufacturers send into the channel and when. A forecast based on shipments should therefore be read as a market-volume outlook, not a direct measure of consumer confidence.

The Galaxy S24 offered a signal, not proof of cause

Samsung launched the Galaxy S24 series in the UK on January 31, 2024, promoting Galaxy AI as a headline feature. Samsung said UK preorders surpassed the predecessor’s total in under seven days and that 70% of UK preorder customers chose the S24 Ultra. These are Samsung’s UK preorder figures; they do not establish Europe-wide sell-through or prove that AI features caused Samsung’s broader market performance. Samsung’s UK launch announcement supplies the date and preorder claims.

Later coverage associated the S24 series with Samsung’s shipment growth and reported a record European premium segment. That association is consistent with a strong flagship launch, but shipment data and preorder figures cannot isolate the effect of Galaxy AI from pricing, promotions, distribution, replacement demand or other factors.

What happened in 2024?

Later reporting put the European market’s 2024 growth at approximately 5%, with more than 136 million devices shipped. On that account, the market recovered after four declining years, but grew more slowly than Canalys’s 7% forecast. Samsung reportedly remained the annual leader and increased shipments by 6%; Apple was particularly strong in Q4, while Xiaomi remained third and Motorola and Oppo also grew. The figures are reported in Technosports’ 2024 market coverage.

Measure Late-2023 expectation or Q3 2023 position Later reported 2024 outcome
European shipment growth 7% growth forecast Approximately 5% growth
Samsung Q3 leader; reported share 35%, with shipments down 6% year over year Annual leader; shipments reportedly up 6%
Market direction Tenth consecutive quarterly decline in Q3 2023 Annual growth after four declining years, according to later coverage

The comparison is indicative, not a perfectly matched audited series: the forecast and reported outcome are presented in separate coverage, and market estimates can vary with methodology and geographic definitions.

What the shipment figures can—and cannot—tell you

  • Shipments are not consumer purchases. Shipments track devices sent into the sales channel. Sell-through tracks devices bought by consumers; installed base tracks phones in use. A shipment share should not be described as the share of consumers who own a brand.
  • The geography matters. The key Canalys figures here exclude Russia. “Europe” is not interchangeable with every national market, and the regional ranking can conceal divergent country results.
  • Quarterly rankings move with launch calendars. Flagship release timing and channel inventory can change a quarter’s result without implying a lasting change in brand preference.
  • Research firms may not be directly comparable. Canalys and other market trackers can define regions, channels and periods differently. Combining their figures into one trend line risks comparing unlike measures.
  • Shipments do not reveal value or profit. The reported leadership says nothing by itself about average price, revenue, margins or the financial return on a vendor’s devices.

Later coverage also reported that phones priced at $800 or more accounted for about 30% of total sales, alongside roughly 41 million premium shipments. Because the same summary mixes sales and shipment terminology, that percentage should not be treated as a clean measure of consumer expenditure; it is best understood as an attributed indication of premium-market weight, not a precise spending share.

What the story means for buyers and investors

For market watchers, the central point is resilience rather than unchallenged dominance: Samsung kept the regional lead through a contraction and reportedly grew in the subsequent recovery, while the market itself rebounded less strongly than forecast. For investors, shipment leadership is only one input; it cannot substitute for company-level revenue, profitability or regional financial disclosures.

For consumers weighing a phone purchase, a vendor’s market rank does not determine which device offers the best value. Compare current local prices, software support, trade-in terms, repair coverage and the features you actually use. Prices, offers and model availability vary by country and date, so historical launch prices or UK preorder data should not guide a current purchase elsewhere.
