Calling someone in another country usually does not fail because of the distance. The call travels over the internet, so the usual culprits are an unstable connection, an unsupported or struggling phone, an audio setting, or mobile-data charges while roaming. App calls generally use internet data rather than international voice minutes, but that does not make the data free—especially when you are away from Wi-Fi.
Why video calls freeze or break up
Video needs a steadier connection than audio. A connection may show several signal bars yet still have weak upload speed, high latency or packet loss. Upload matters because your phone must send your picture and voice; download matters because it must receive the other caller’s. Congestion, a weak Wi-Fi link or switching between Wi-Fi and cellular can interrupt either direction.
Zoom’s published requirements for a one-to-one call list about 600 kbps in both directions for high-quality video, 1.2 Mbps up and down for 720p, and 3.8 Mbps down with 3.0 Mbps up for 1080p. These are Zoom figures, not guaranteed minimums for every app or every call. Zoom says it adjusts bandwidth to the participants’ network conditions. Its standard one-to-one network indicator labels under 72 Kbps very bad, under 128 Kbps bad, under 180 Kbps not good, under 320 Kbps normal, under 640 Kbps good, and 640 Kbps or above excellent; high round-trip time or packet loss can also produce instability warnings. Zoom’s bandwidth requirements and network stability indicators explain those measures.
When the connection is too weak for video, turn video off and continue with audio if the app allows it. A headset can help with sound, but it cannot repair packet loss or a congested network.

Why the other person can see you but cannot hear you
One-way audio is often a separate microphone, speaker or permission problem rather than a video-bandwidth problem. Check that the call is not muted, that the app has microphone permission, and that the phone is using the intended microphone and speaker. Disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth devices if the audio route seems wrong.
- Make a short recording or voice call to check whether the phone’s microphone works outside the video call.
- Raise the volume and check whether sound is routed to a connected headset or speaker.
- Try a wired USB-C or Bluetooth headset with a microphone if the built-in audio path is unreliable. It may improve microphone and speaker handling, but it is not a network fix.
Zoom lists Bluetooth speakers and microphones as optional audio devices. WhatsApp’s troubleshooting guidance also points to internet quality, app and operating-system updates, Wi-Fi, roaming and carrier APN settings as possible causes of connection or media problems. WhatsApp’s connection troubleshooting steps include checks to try when the issue persists.
Will a call to another country cost extra?
The country code alone does not determine the cost. WhatsApp, Google Meet and Zoom calls use an internet connection, so the main cost question is whether that connection uses Wi-Fi, included mobile data or chargeable roaming data. Your carrier’s plan and roaming terms determine what cellular data costs; the official app guidance cited here does not establish a universal per-minute data amount or roaming price.
WhatsApp warns, “If you use WhatsApp while your phone is roaming, data charges might apply.” It recommends using Wi-Fi and turning off mobile data and data roaming if you do not have an international plan. Check your carrier’s terms before travel rather than assuming an app call is free. WhatsApp’s data-roaming guidance covers these precautions.

A local SIM can provide local mobile data while you travel, and you may continue using WhatsApp with your home number. WhatsApp notes that re-verifying the account may require access to the original SIM, so keep that in mind before changing SIMs.
How to avoid roaming charges
- Before travelling, check your carrier plan. Confirm whether it includes data roaming in the country you will visit and what charges apply if it does not.
- Turn off mobile data and data roaming if you have no suitable plan. Use Wi-Fi for app calls. If you need cellular service, consider a local SIM or other travel-data option after checking coverage and terms.
- Do not assume Wi-Fi always blocks cellular use. Google says Meet can use a small amount of mobile data as a backup even while connected to Wi-Fi. For stronger protection against cellular data charges, disable mobile data in your phone settings while using Wi-Fi.
- Use Meet’s data controls when cellular use is necessary. Its Android guidance says that when Wi-Fi is unavailable, Meet automatically lowers the connection to 1 Mbps; Data Saver reduces data and CPU and battery demand. This limits use, but does not mean calls use no data. See Google Meet’s Android mobile-data guidance.
Can a budget Android phone run WhatsApp, Meet or Zoom?
A low-cost phone can make internet calls if its Android version and hardware meet the app’s requirements, but launching an app does not guarantee smooth video. Heat, limited memory or background processes can make a particular phone struggle; those effects vary by device and are not established for every budget model.

For the Zoom Android mobile release line described in its requirements, Zoom lists Android 9.0 or later, Wi-Fi or 3G/4G/LTE connectivity, and a 1 GHz single-core-or-better processor that is not Intel. Requirements change over time, so check the current app listing and support page for the specific release and phone. Zoom’s Android system requirements provide its stated baseline.
- Install app and Android updates before a trip, while you have reliable Wi-Fi.
- Close apps you do not need during a call and let an overheated phone cool down.
- If video remains unstable, switch to audio or join from a device with a stronger connection rather than assuming the phone can overcome a poor network.
A practical order for troubleshooting a failing call
- Try reliable Wi-Fi. If you must use cellular, check upload and download stability; signal bars alone do not show whether the connection can sustain video.
- Reduce what the connection must carry. Turn off video or enable Meet’s data-saving controls. For Zoom, its published bandwidth figures can help explain why higher video quality needs more capacity, but they are not a guarantee that a connection will be stable.
- Check the call’s audio path. Confirm microphone permission, mute status, speaker selection and any connected headset.
- Refresh the connection and test elsewhere. Toggle airplane mode, Wi-Fi or mobile data, then try opening a web page and using another app. Update the calling app and make sure Android is supported.
- For a persistent WhatsApp connection issue, check carrier settings. WhatsApp recommends checking the signal, web access, app and operating-system support, Wi-Fi, roaming and APN/provider settings; contact the provider if those checks do not resolve it.
- Protect your bill before switching networks abroad. Confirm roaming terms and disable mobile data and roaming if you do not have an appropriate plan.
- Keep audio and try again later if video still fails. Severe packet loss or congestion can defeat any app’s adaptation; arrange the next video call from a stronger connection.
Choosing between WhatsApp, Meet and Zoom
There is no universal winner established by the available official guidance. The practical choice depends on whether both callers already use the app, the phone’s Android compatibility, network conditions, and the data controls you need.
