Historical snapshot: January 1–March 31, 2020. China’s tablet market shipped about 3.73 million units in the first quarter of 2020, a 29.8% year-over-year decline, according to figures attributed to IDC. Factory and supply-chain disruption coincided with sharply weaker commercial procurement, while online schooling supported consumer demand. Huawei was the only leading vendor reported to have grown year over year.
China tablet shipments in Q1 2020: the key figures
The figures below describe shipments into China during January–March 2020, not necessarily devices bought by end users in that period. Shipment estimates and vendor explanations are attributed to IDC’s quarterly tracking report as reproduced by GizChina.

The categories describe different cuts of the market: slate versus detachable is a device-form split, while commercial versus consumer is a customer-market split. Slate tablets are traditional tablet designs without a permanently integrated keyboard structure; detachable tablets are designed to work with a detachable keyboard. Category boundaries can vary among market trackers.
Why the market contracted
The quarter captured the initial COVID-19 outbreak, lockdowns, factory shutdowns and delayed production restarts. Disruption intensified over the three-month period, so the quarterly totals should not be read as if conditions were uniform from January through March. Interruptions to manufacturing and supply chains constrained the number of devices vendors could ship.

Commercial procurement fell hardest
Commercial shipments declined 47.8% year over year to about 620,000 units. The report attributed the fall to government resources being redirected toward epidemic control, school suspensions, and enterprises halting or delaying operations. Government, education and business tablet projects were postponed or canceled, making procurement cycles less predictable.
Online learning supported consumer demand, but supply remained a constraint
Consumer shipments were about 3.1 million, down 24.6% year over year. The report said online education supported demand as families and students needed devices for remote classes. That demand did not translate into shipment growth: factory closures and component shortages limited vendors’ ability to fulfill it. Online learning cushioned the downturn rather than overcoming broader disruption.

Detachable tablets proved more resilient than slates
About 2.06 million detachable tablets shipped, compared with approximately 1.67 million slates. Slate shipments plunged 63.3% year over year; the report did not specify a year-over-year change for detachables.
A plausible interpretation is that detachable devices were better aligned with remote work and study because a keyboard can support productivity tasks that might otherwise be done on a laptop. Traditional slates may have been more exposed to paused commercial projects and weaker discretionary purchases. The source establishes the shipment gap and the online-education effect, but does not provide a full causal breakdown of the difference.

Vendor rankings and reported performance
IDC-attributed estimates put Huawei and Apple far ahead of the other named vendors. Unit counts are approximate, and explanations in the final column are assessments reported by the source, not independently established causes.

Huawei grew while the market shrank
Huawei shipped about 1.5 million units and held 40.2% share, while its shipments grew 4.3% year over year. The report attributed its outperformance to production resuming at manufacturing partners. It also said shutdowns still reduced Huawei’s shipments; the figures therefore indicate relative resilience, not an unaffected supply chain.

Apple’s decline was not reversed by the new iPad Pro
Apple shipped about 1.31 million iPads, down 42.5% year over year. The report said slow production recovery and a shortage of later spare parts weighed on supply. It also said the new iPad Pro launch did not materially reverse the shipment decline, citing positioning and price among the context. That is a claim about the quarter’s overall shipments, not evidence that the product launch was broadly unsuccessful.
Smaller vendors faced different constraints
The report described Xiaomi’s older tablets as discontinued and said follow-up products had not yet arrived, an assessment offered to explain its 31.3% decline. Microsoft’s shipments fell 17.6% year over year; the report also cited an approximately 1.5% month-over-month decline. Those comparisons use different time bases, and the monthly figure alone does not establish positive quarterly momentum.

Lenovo’s reported 60,000 units and 1.7% share refer to China and the report’s tablet categories, not Lenovo’s global business. Its shipments fell 49.5% year over year, and the report attributed much of the disruption to a manufacturing partner in the Wuhan area. It also said Lenovo improved its consumer-market position through online-course demand and stronger online-channel cooperation.

- Huawei and Apple dominated the reported market. Their approximately 2.81 million combined shipments and reported shares add to 75.3% of the market. That concentration is notable, but it does not indicate revenue, profit or installed base.
- The five listed vendors shipped about 3.20 million units. This is roughly 85.8% of the 3.73-million-unit total. By subtraction, other vendors accounted for about 530,000 units; the implied remainder is approximate because the source rounds its figures.
- Rounded categories do not reconcile exactly. Slate and detachable shipments add to about 3.73 million. Commercial and consumer shipments add to about 3.72 million, roughly 10,000 short of the headline total, consistent with rounding.
- Shipments are not retail sales. The figures do not establish sell-through, end-user purchases, device use, revenue, profitability or the active installed base.
- This is a one-quarter historical snapshot. Q1 figures alone cannot establish full-year 2020 performance, subsequent recovery, the persistence of online-learning demand or long-term vendor winners.
