Facebook’s Seattle strategy began as a recruiting solution, not an attempt to replace Silicon Valley. By 2022, the company had built a major engineering presence there; by 2026, Meta’s layoffs and AI spending showed the limits of the old expansion model. Seattle remains a powerful technology labor market, while Silicon Valley still dominates frontier-AI finance. Both regions are being reorganized around specialized talent, computing infrastructure and stricter capital discipline.
Why Facebook chose Seattle
Facebook opened its Seattle engineering operation as an early experiment in running a major team outside the Bay Area. Mark Zuckerberg’s explanation, reported by GeekWire in 2022, emphasized Seattle’s deep engineering base, cultural compatibility with Silicon Valley, shared Pacific time zone and proximity to the company’s California operations.
The practical incentive was recruitment. Engineers with experience at Microsoft, Amazon, Google and local startups could join Facebook without moving to the Bay Area. The arrangement also gave Facebook a repeatable model for adding talent in another labor market while keeping teams operationally connected.
When Seattle stopped being an outpost
The model scaled well beyond a small satellite office. Facebook grew to more than 8,000 people across the Seattle area over the decade covered by the 2022 GeekWire report. That is a historical figure, not a current 2026 headcount, but it marks the point at which Seattle had become part of Facebook’s core engineering organization.

The broader regional effect followed a familiar technology-cluster loop:
- Microsoft and Amazon supplied experienced engineers and managers.
- Large Bay Area companies competed for that workforce and opened substantial offices.
- Founders, recruiters, contractors, professional-services firms and investors followed the talent.
- Corporate employment supported demand for housing, restaurants, transportation and commercial real estate.
Seattle became connected to Silicon Valley without becoming a copy of it. Its identity was increasingly tied to cloud computing, enterprise software, developer tools and large-scale engineering.
The 2022 reckoning: growth met its limits
In November 2022, Meta eliminated 11,000 jobs, or 13% of its workforce, according to the same GeekWire account. The cuts followed pandemic-era hiring and spending that had assumed unusually rapid growth in digital activity and advertising.
The significance extended beyond one employer. Advertising-sensitive businesses faced a weaker economy and changing digital-advertising conditions. Investors became less willing to fund indefinite expansion, speculative projects and large office commitments. “Efficiency” replaced growth-at-any-cost as the dominant management objective.

A region’s strategic importance and its workers’ job security are different things. Seattle could remain essential to Meta’s engineering plans while particular teams, functions or projects were cut.
What changed by 2026: fewer broad roles, more AI concentration
Meta’s next restructuring was larger in strategic implication. The Associated Press reported approximately 8,000 additional layoffs in April 2026, about 10% of the workforce, as the company redirected capital toward AI infrastructure and highly paid AI specialists (AP).
Meta’s 2025 annual filing shows the combination of contraction and continued investment. The company reported 78,865 employees worldwide on December 31, 2025. It occupied or leased approximately 10 million square feet around its headquarters, including about 2 million square feet of unoccupied space that it planned to sublease, terminate or abandon. Reality Labs reduced 2025 operating profit by approximately $19.19 billion, with similar operating losses expected in 2026 (Meta’s SEC filing).
These figures do not establish that Meta is abandoning Seattle or that the company is failing. They show a capital-allocation shift: less tolerance for general headcount and underused space, alongside large commitments to computing, model development and scarce specialist talent.

Washington felt the change directly
In May 2026, KUOW reported that Meta layoffs affected nearly 1,400 Washington workers, disproportionately affecting the Seattle-area presence (KUOW). The reported rationale was the same redirection toward AI data centers and related priorities. Meta’s operation had become large enough to symbolize Silicon Valley’s decentralization—and large enough to be exposed when priorities changed.
Is Seattle still gaining technology jobs?
Seattle remains a major technology-talent market, but talent strength is no longer the same as near-term employment growth. CBRE reported that Seattle-area companies added 8,940 jobs between 2022 and 2024 and that the region produced 14,107 technology-degree graduates between 2021 and 2023 (CBRE). Those measures describe the region’s labor pipeline; they do not mean every job was an AI role or that hiring will continue at that pace.
A 2026 Seattle forecast warned that employment growth could remain weak through 2027 as technology companies emphasize AI investment and operational streamlining. It also reported that Seattle office values had fallen approximately 24% since 2019 and that office demand was below half its pre-pandemic level at the end of 2025 (Axios).
Seattle and Silicon Valley in the AI economy
Neither region is simply “winning.” They occupy different positions in an increasingly concentrated technology economy.

| Dimension | Seattle | Silicon Valley |
|---|---|---|
| Core advantage | Cloud, enterprise software and large-scale engineering | Venture capital, founders and frontier-AI concentration |
| Key institutions | Microsoft, Amazon, universities and major engineering offices | AI startups, venture firms, research networks and established technology companies |
| AI opportunity | Infrastructure, applied AI, developer tools and enterprise systems | Frontier models, research-heavy startups, mega-rounds and acquisitions |
| Current pressure | Weak broad hiring, office vacancy and exposure to large employers | High costs, severe office vacancy and capital concentration |
| Main risk | A deep but employer-concentrated labor market | Financing bubbles, inequality and real-estate dysfunction |
CBRE’s 2026 technology-office analysis found that AI represented $218 billion, or 83%, of $264 billion in venture funding in its analysis. It also found stronger absorption or falling vacancy in Silicon Valley and San Francisco while Seattle’s vacancy increased by approximately five percentage points (CBRE). The methodology and geography matter: this is not a claim that every global venture dollar went to AI.
Seattle startups raised $2.7 billion across 163 deals in the first half of 2026, down from $4.5 billion across 210 deals in the first half of 2025, according to GeekWire. The decline partly reflects concentration: AI infrastructure is attracting very large checks into fewer leading companies, rather than distributing capital evenly across the startup market.

Unused offices are an important economic signal but not a simple technology-health score. San Francisco had a 32.8% office-vacancy rate in the fourth quarter of 2025 in CBRE’s tracked markets, even as selected AI submarkets attracted investment and leasing. Hybrid work, subleases, interest rates, new construction and local development patterns all affect vacancy.
Meta’s disclosure of roughly 2 million unoccupied square feet around its headquarters illustrates the distinction between corporate prestige and actual occupancy. AI can increase demand for data centers, networking and specialized research space while reducing demand for conventional desk-based offices.

What the shift means for workers and households
Specialists may remain in demand
Researchers, infrastructure engineers, chip and systems specialists and people who can deploy AI at scale may continue to command strong offers. That demand is narrower than the broad hiring waves of the late 2010s and pandemic period.
Generalist and support roles face more uncertainty
Generalist software, recruiting, product, operations and support positions can be affected when a company removes layers, consolidates teams or automates routine work. A financially strong company can still reduce those roles.
Layoffs spread beyond payroll
Contractors, vendors, restaurants, transportation providers and local tax bases feel the effects when a large employer cuts staff or leaves space unused. A large technical labor pool can help displaced workers, but simultaneous reductions at Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and other companies make transitions more difficult.
Immigration requires individual advice
Workers on employer-sponsored visas can face deadlines and restrictions that do not apply to other employees. Reporting about layoffs is not a substitute for current advice from a qualified immigration attorney or official government source.
A connected corridor with different operating models
Seattle still benefits from Bay Area capital, founders and company networks. Silicon Valley benefits from Seattle’s cloud expertise, engineering workforce and proximity to Microsoft and Amazon. The relationship is increasingly reciprocal rather than a one-way transfer of ideas northward.
For personal financial decisions, the practical lesson is to distinguish a strong ecosystem from a secure job. Workers and households exposed to either region should stress-test budgets for longer searches, variable equity compensation and concentrated employer risk. The regions remain important AI hubs, but the next phase rewards specialized capability and infrastructure more than indiscriminate headcount growth.
