This is a historical December 2021 buying snapshot, not a 2026 recommendation. The five phones selected at the time were the Redmi Note 11 Pro, Meizu 18X, Realme GT Neo 2, Honor X30 Max and Oppo K9 Pro. The prices primarily described Chinese-market or import availability, so tax, shipping, bands, Google services and warranty could change the real value for an overseas buyer. The table reproduces the period specifications; it does not establish a delivered international price. The five-phone ranking comes from the contemporaneous source article.
What “Chinese smartphone under $500” meant in December 2021
“Chinese” can describe a Chinese-owned brand, a phone sold domestically in China, or a global model made by a Chinese company. Those are not interchangeable. These selections were largely China-market or China-oriented devices. A domestic price converted to dollars was not necessarily the amount an importer paid after shipping, sales tax, customs, seller fees and a suitable charger.
Exact model number, RAM/storage variant and launch region matter. The Redmi Note 11 Pro name, in particular, covers materially different regional hardware. A global model may use another chipset, camera arrangement, bands, charging package or firmware. Treat the specifications below as the cited 2021 variant, not universal specifications for every phone carrying the name.

1. Redmi Note 11 Pro: the broadest value package
Gizchina positioned the Redmi Note 11 Pro as the overall value winner at just over $300 in China. The cited configuration combined a Dimensity 920, up to 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, a 6.67-inch Full HD+ AMOLED E4 panel, 120Hz refresh and 360Hz touch sampling. Its 5,160mAh battery and 67W charging were unusually strong for the class.
The rear array listed a 108MP main, 8MP ultrawide, 5MP macro and 2MP depth camera, with a 16MP selfie camera. NFC, a 3.5mm headphone jack and an infrared blaster added practical value. Megapixel counts do not by themselves prove photo quality, so the camera hardware should be read as feature breadth rather than a guarantee of flagship images.

Choose this variant when battery capacity, display quality, charging speed and everyday features matter more than peak gaming performance.
Import warning
Confirm whether the listing is the China or global model, its LTE/5G bands, VoLTE and Wi-Fi-calling support, ROM language options and Google Mobile Services. A listing titled simply “Redmi Note 11 Pro” is not specific enough.

2. Meizu 18X: performance-first alternative
The Meizu 18X used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 870 with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage in the cited configuration. Its 6.67-inch Full HD+ AMOLED E4 display ran at 120Hz with 360Hz touch sampling. Cameras were a 64MP main, 8MP ultrawide and 2MP macro, plus a 13MP front camera. A 4,300mAh battery and 30W charging were the compromises against the Redmi’s larger battery and faster charging.
NFC was listed, but payment usability still depends on firmware, certification, Google services and the bank’s app. The Snapdragon 870 made the 18X attractive to enthusiasts seeking 2021 high-end performance without flagship pricing.
Best match
It suits buyers who prioritize processor performance and a high-refresh AMOLED panel and can accept a less ambitious battery system.
Import warning
Check Meizu’s exact Flyme region, available languages, Google support, update path, repair options and return address before paying. International support was a larger practical question than the specification sheet suggested.

3. Realme GT Neo 2: strongest gaming balance
The GT Neo 2 paired a Snapdragon 870 with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, a 6.62-inch Samsung AMOLED E4 display, 5,000mAh battery and 65W charging. Its cited cameras were 64MP main, 8MP ultrawide and 2MP macro, with a 16MP front camera; NFC was also included.
Its 120Hz figure describes display refresh. The separately quoted 600Hz figure describes touch-sampling response, not a 600Hz screen. That distinction matters: touch sampling can improve input responsiveness in supported games, but it does not make animation run at 600 frames per second.
Best match
This was the clearest choice for gaming, sustained everyday speed and fast top-ups, provided the buyer accepted a camera system that was less versatile than its headline 64MP number implies.
Import warning
Verify whether the unit is a Chinese or global ROM, which LTE and 5G bands it supports, and whether the seller will honor returns outside China. Realme’s official availability and support vary sharply by country.

4. Honor X30 Max: a phone-sized media slate
The X30 Max’s defining feature was its 7.09-inch Full HD+ display. It used a Dimensity 900, 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, with microSD expansion specifically cited. Cameras were a 64MP main and 2MP macro, plus an 8MP selfie camera. A 5,000mAh battery, 22.5W charging, NFC and a 3.5mm jack completed the listed package.
Best match
Buyers who watch video, read extensively or use split-screen apps may prefer the near-tablet canvas. The size is a deliberate trade-off: one-handed use, pockets and cases are substantially less convenient than with the other four models.
Import warning
The Dimensity 900 sits below the Snapdragon 870 in 2021 performance positioning, and 22.5W charging was slowest in this group. Confirm the China firmware, language support, bands and warranty before treating the low headline price as a bargain.
5. Oppo K9 Pro: compact performance and rapid charging
The Oppo K9 Pro offered the Dimensity 1200, 8GB RAM and 128GB storage in a smaller 6.43-inch Samsung E3 AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh. It listed a 64MP main, 8MP ultrawide and 2MP macro rear system, a 16MP punch-hole selfie camera, 4,500mAh battery and 60W charging. NFC and a 3.5mm headphone jack were included in the cited specifications.

It was the natural choice for someone who found 6.6- to 7.1-inch phones unwieldy but still wanted high 2021 performance and rapid charging.
Import warning
Oppo’s sales, firmware and repair support are highly regional. Confirm carrier bands, VoLTE, Google services, charger plug, seller return terms and the exact ColorOS version rather than relying on the K9 Pro name alone.

A sub-$500 listing should be treated as a starting price. Add international shipping, sales tax, customs or brokerage, seller fees and any replacement charger. Check whether the quoted amount applied to the same RAM/storage version, a promotion, an open-box unit or a China-only sale. The December article does not document a complete delivered-cost method, so no precise landed price can be inferred from its headline figures.
China ROM, global ROM and Google services
China-ROM phones can ship without Google Mobile Services and may include Chinese system apps, fewer language choices, advertising or notification restrictions. A seller-installed “global ROM” is not automatically an official global model. Manual installation or bootloader flashing can affect banking apps, Widevine DRM, updates, security certification and warranty.

Will one work on a US carrier?
Do not infer US compatibility from the presence of 4G or 5G in a listing. For the exact model and carrier, check supported LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, SIM configuration, eSIM availability, carrier certification and—where relevant in 2021—legacy CDMA requirements. A phone may connect to basic data yet lack reliable coverage, voice service or 5G.
Buyer checklist for a 2021 import
- Record the exact model number, region and RAM/storage configuration.
- Compare that model’s LTE, 5G, VoLTE and Wi-Fi-calling support with your carrier.
- Confirm China or global ROM, Google services, languages and update eligibility.
- Calculate the delivered cost, including tax, duty, shipping and charger.
- Check whether the charger plug and charging protocol suit your country.
- Read the seller’s return window, repair location and warranty exclusions.
- Confirm NFC payment compatibility with your bank and required apps.
- Keep evidence of the advertised configuration in case the seller ships a different ROM or variant.
Which phone was best for each buyer?
- Best overall value: Redmi Note 11 Pro, if you buy the correct regional variant.
- Best gaming balance: Realme GT Neo 2.
- Best raw performance per dollar: Meizu 18X or Oppo K9 Pro, depending on the verified price, ROM and support.
- Best battery-and-charging package: Redmi Note 11 Pro or Realme GT Neo 2.
- Best media device: Honor X30 Max for buyers who specifically want a 7.09-inch screen.
- Best compact option: Oppo K9 Pro among these five.
- Best expandable-storage option: Honor X30 Max, because microSD support was specifically listed.
Historical verdict
For a December 2021 China-market buyer, the Redmi Note 11 Pro was the safest all-round specification choice, while the Realme GT Neo 2 made more sense for gaming. The Honor X30 Max served a distinct large-screen audience, and the Meizu 18X and Oppo K9 Pro rewarded enthusiasts willing to manage greater import and software uncertainty. None should be treated as a current 2026 recommendation without rechecking availability, security updates, carrier support and parts.
