Amazon Web Services confirmed in January 2019 that it had acquired Israeli disaster-recovery and cloud-migration company CloudEndure. CloudEndure’s website announced that it had become an AWS company, and AWS confirmed the purchase to technology publications. AWS did not disclose the transaction value: media reports put it at approximately $200 million to $250 million, but neither figure was confirmed by AWS.
What AWS actually confirmed
Reports from Israel surfaced in early January 2019. After CloudEndure identified itself as part of AWS, the cloud provider confirmed the acquisition. The brief confirmation did not state a closing date, purchase price, employee count, integration timetable, or detailed product commitments.
That distinction matters. “AWS acquired CloudEndure” is established. “AWS paid $200 million” or “AWS paid $250 million” is not an AWS-disclosed fact.
What CloudEndure did
Founded in 2012 and based in Israel’s Ramat Gan area, CloudEndure developed software for disaster recovery, continuous backup, live workload migration and business continuity. Reports named Ofer Gadish as chief executive, Gil Shai as chief revenue officer, Ofir Ehrlich as vice president of research and development, and Leonid Feinberg as vice president of product. Depending on the source and reporting date, the company had raised roughly $18 million to $20 million. TechCrunch and Globes described the company’s history and financing.

Its technology protected physical, virtual, on-premises and cloud-based servers. Before the acquisition, product descriptions covered AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, VMware and private-data-center environments. That made CloudEndure more than an AWS migration utility: it was also a hybrid- and multicloud continuity platform.
How the technology worked
CloudEndure continuously copied changed storage blocks from source machines into a relatively inexpensive staging area in a target cloud. Replication occurred continuously rather than only during periodic full backups.
- Block-level replication: Changed blocks were transmitted instead of repeatedly copying entire disks.
- Staging: Data remained in a low-cost recovery state until a drill or failover required machines to be launched.
- Machine conversion: AWS described automatic conversion so recovered systems could boot and run natively on AWS.
- Point-in-time recovery: Earlier recovery points could be selected, which is important when the newest state contains corruption or ransomware encryption.
- Failback: After the primary environment recovered, workloads could be replicated from AWS back to the original environment.
AWS described support for on-premises-to-cloud, cross-Region, cross-Availability Zone and cross-cloud recovery. AWS product materials cited recovery-point objectives measured in seconds and recovery-time objectives measured in minutes, but those are product claims, not guarantees for every application. Actual results depend on workload design, network capacity, dependencies and testing. The architecture is outlined in the AWS News Blog and AWS Storage Blog.
Why AWS wanted CloudEndure
Enterprise migration
Many large organizations still operated physical servers, VMware estates, private clouds or workloads in another public cloud. Continuous replication reduced the operational friction of moving those systems into AWS and allowed migration teams to test a cutover before switching production.

Disaster recovery as a route into AWS
A company could initially replicate systems to AWS for business continuity without permanently migrating every workload. Once AWS became the recovery site, it could become the destination for broader modernization and production migration.
Competition with Azure
Industry analysts interpreted the purchase as strengthening AWS’s answer to Microsoft Azure Site Recovery and related continuity services. That is an analyst interpretation, not a publicly stated AWS motive. The acquisition nevertheless gave AWS a mature replication and recovery capability rather than requiring it to build one from scratch. TechTarget’s coverage provides that competitive context.
The multicloud tension
CloudEndure’s appeal partly came from supporting competing clouds, VMware and private infrastructure. AWS could gain the most commercial value by integrating the technology deeply with AWS, while customers might value it precisely because it was not tied to one provider. The deal therefore raised a practical question: how much of CloudEndure’s former neutrality would survive AWS ownership?
What did the acquisition cost?
| Report | Estimated value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Globes | Approximately $250 million | Media estimate, not confirmed by AWS |
| TechCrunch | Approximately $200 million | Sources cited by the publication; not confirmed by AWS |
| AWS | Not disclosed | No public transaction value in the cited confirmation |
The defensible conclusion is that the price was reported as somewhere between roughly $200 million and $250 million. A precise purchase price remains publicly unsettled.

How AWS integrated the product
In January 2020, AWS announced an approximately 80% reduction in CloudEndure Disaster Recovery pricing and changed the model from contract-based pricing to usage-based billing. The historical rate was $0.028 per protected server-hour, or about $20.16 per server-month when calculated over 720 hours. That software rate did not include AWS infrastructure charges. The announcement is documented by AWS.
Customers could still incur charges for staging storage, replication-server compute, network transfer, EC2 and EBS resources used during tests or failover, and application licenses. AWS said the service could protect environments including Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server and SAP, but workload support and recovery behavior depend on the operating system, architecture and service version.
What happened to CloudEndure after 2019?
AWS launched AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery (DRS) in November 2021 and described it as the next generation of CloudEndure Disaster Recovery. DRS moved the experience into the AWS Management Console and added integrations with IAM, CloudTrail and CloudWatch.
As of August 18, 2026, AWS documentation presents DRS as the recommended service for disaster recovery to AWS and directs existing CloudEndure customers toward migration. AWS Marketplace and lifecycle documentation describe a staged discontinuation of CloudEndure Disaster Recovery in most Regions, with limited historical exceptions involving China, GovCloud, AWS Managed Services and Outposts. Different AWS pages describe different phases and remaining shutdown dates, so there is no single universal retirement date that applies to every environment. See the AWS DRS FAQ, AWS Marketplace listing and AWS General Reference.

What existing customers need to check
Recovery destination
DRS is the logical successor when AWS is the recovery destination. Organizations that require active recovery across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, VMware and private infrastructure should compare cloud-neutral alternatives instead of assuming the original CloudEndure posture remains unchanged.
Recovery objectives and application consistency
Continuous replication can reduce data loss, but it does not automatically make a distributed application consistent. Database clusters, Active Directory, shared storage, DNS, secrets, load balancers, monitoring and external integrations need coordinated recovery procedures. A successful server boot is not the same as a usable application.
Ransomware, drills and failback
Ransomware recovery requires selecting a clean point in time; the latest replicated state may already be encrypted. Failover should be rehearsed, and failback can be harder than failover because data must be reconciled and written back to the original environment.
Migration readiness
AWS documents a CloudEndure-to-DRS assessment and upgrade process. Depending on the environment, it can involve importing a launchable snapshot, testing it, replacing the CloudEndure Agent with the AWS Replication Agent and completing a rescan. The AWS upgrade guide describes the detailed procedure. Customers on older deployments should verify eligibility and test the migrated configuration rather than assume a seamless cutover.

CloudEndure versus adjacent AWS services
AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery is the direct successor for continuously replicating and recovering workloads into AWS. AWS Application Migration Service is the migration-focused path for moving workloads into AWS, not a substitute for a continuously tested disaster-recovery program; AWS explains the distinction in its service decision guidance.
Azure Site Recovery may be more natural for Microsoft- and Azure-centered estates. VMware-native tools and specialist providers such as Veeam, Rubrik, Cohesity, Zerto and Commvault may better suit organizations seeking broader multicloud portability, immutable backup or an existing enterprise relationship. Comparisons should examine source-platform support, recovery destinations, application-aware orchestration, ransomware recovery, failback, testing automation and total cost—not just a replication fee.
The financial and strategic significance
The transaction gave AWS a faster route into enterprise disaster recovery and migration, areas where reliability and switching costs influence long-term infrastructure spending. It also illustrated a recurring cloud-platform trade-off: a provider can make an acquired tool cheaper and more deeply integrated while making its strategic neutrality less certain.
For customers, the historical $0.028 hourly rate was never the complete bill, and the original CloudEndure product is no longer the service AWS broadly promotes. The relevant current decision is whether AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery meets the organization’s recovery, portability and operational requirements.

AWS confirmed the January 2019 CloudEndure acquisition, but never confirmed the reported $200 million-to-$250 million price. CloudEndure’s continuous block-level replication strengthened AWS’s migration and disaster-recovery portfolio; its technology later became AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery, while the original CloudEndure service entered a staged retirement.
