The September 5, 2023 interview with Daniel Goetz, vivo Europe’s Product Manager, is best read as a statement of strategy—not proof of a financially verified “success story.” Goetz describes how vivo says it researches European consumers, selects products for particular markets, uses imaging partnerships to stand out, and balances headline features against component cost. The interview supplies no audited European sales, market-share, revenue or profitability figures.
What the interview actually covers
GizChina’s interview focuses on the vivo V29 and V29 Lite, the X90 Pro and China-exclusive X90 Pro+, the ZEISS imaging relationship, and cooperation with Sony’s Lytia imaging division. Goetz joined vivo’s European headquarters in Düsseldorf in 2022. The biographical material describes him as a Product Manager responsible for European positioning and go-to-market work across the Y, V and X series, with a background in consumer-technology marketing and business development. His German upbringing, English fluency and conversational Chinese are presented by the interview as useful cultural and communications assets, rather than independently verified biography.

That is evidence of a planned market-entry process, not evidence of commercial success. The announcement does not provide country-level sell-through, market share, revenue, profit, retention or customer-satisfaction data. A Spanish report later described Spain as an important market and mentioned a first store presence at MediaMarkt in Majadahonda, but that local detail is not equivalent to audited performance.

The strategic playbook described by Goetz
Local research and selective launches
Goetz presents consumer research as the starting point for product decisions. vivo does not necessarily release every model worldwide; the company says it considers local demand, software, configuration and market requirements before launching a device. This approach can improve relevance, but localisation also adds certification, software, retail and support costs.
Three portfolio tiers
| Series | Positioning described in the interview |
|---|---|
| Y | Entry-level users |
| V | Mid-range buyers seeking a broad feature package |
| X | Flagship imaging and premium positioning |
Feature bundling rather than one headline component
vivo argues that camera capability, charging, durability, display, design and everyday reliability should be considered together. That can make an older processor a deliberate allocation choice, although it does not remove the performance and longevity questions that buyers should test independently.

Why the V29’s Aura Light mattered
According to vivo, the V29’s Aura Light was designed for portraits rather than functioning as a conventional flash. The company specified a 15.6 mm diameter, a light-emitting area nine times larger than a standard flash, and brightness 36% higher than the V27. Smart Color Temperature Adjustment was intended to adapt illumination to surrounding conditions, producing softer, more even portraits.
- “Nine times larger” refers to light-emitting area, not necessarily nine times the photographic output.
- The 36% figure is a manufacturer comparison with the V27; the interview does not provide a testing method.
- These are product claims, not independent camera-test results.
The V29 also carried vivo-stated 50 MP front and rear cameras, a 92-degree front-camera field of view, 80W FlashCharge, a high-resolution AMOLED display, a slim design with “3D Magnetic Particles,” and IP68 dust and water resistance. IP68 protection is measured under controlled IEC 60529 laboratory conditions; it is not unlimited protection against drops, salt water, damaged seals or aging.
Why use the Snapdragon 778G?
Goetz’s explanation is strategic, not benchmark-based. vivo considered the Snapdragon 778G stable and reliable for expected V-series use and preferred to spend the overall device budget on cameras, charging, durability, display and design.
- Possible benefits: a mature platform, predictable thermal behaviour, adequate performance for messaging, photography, streaming and ordinary productivity, and more budget for other hardware.
- Possible costs: less performance headroom for demanding games and sustained workloads, potentially lower long-term efficiency than newer chips, and a weaker perception of value among buyers who prioritise the newest processor.
No independent benchmark, battery or thermal result in the interview proves that the 778G was the best choice.

V29 and V29 Lite: different jobs in the same range
| Model | Features highlighted by vivo | Intended emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| V29 | Aura Light; Smart Color Temperature Adjustment; 50 MP front and rear cameras; 92-degree front camera; IP68; 80W charging; AMOLED display | More imaging-focused and feature-rich mid-range package |
| V29 Lite | 64 MP main camera with optical image stabilisation; 120Hz AMOLED; 44W charging; 5,000 mAh battery; extended RAM; eSIM; IP54 | More affordability- and reliability-focused option |
The specifications explain segmentation, not market performance. Availability, pricing and promotions were country-specific and may no longer apply.
V29 Lite versus the Galaxy A54: what remains unproven
When asked about Samsung’s Galaxy A54, Goetz restated the V-series advantages rather than offering a neutral head-to-head test. A meaningful comparison would need the same country and date, then examine:
- daylight, low-light and portrait camera output;
- processor performance, gaming and sustained thermals;
- display quality and refresh rate;
- battery endurance and charging time;
- water and dust protection;
- software-support duration, eSIM operation and repair coverage;
- retail price, promotions and resale value.
The interview does not establish that the V29 Lite beat the Galaxy A54 on any of those measures.
Why the X90 Pro+ stayed in China
Goetz said vivo believed the international X90 Pro already delivered much of the X90 Pro+ camera experience. He also pointed to different chipsets and displays, and to the software split between Funtouch OS on the international model and OriginOS in China. The stated principle was to match products to each market rather than automatically export the highest-specification version.

This is an example of regional portfolio management, not a single confirmed explanation for non-launch. The interview does not resolve whether localisation expense, certification, carrier requirements, supply constraints or expected demand was decisive. China-exclusive hardware can simplify a portfolio, but it can also frustrate enthusiasts and encourage grey-market imports with uncertain warranty and network support.

Related interviews describe the vivo–ZEISS relationship as a strategic research and development partnership in smartphone imaging. The stated engineering concerns include reflections, chromatic aberration, distortion and other optical artefacts. Coverage of the X80 Pro highlighted a 50 MP optically stabilised main camera, 48 MP ultra-wide camera, portrait camera with gimbal stabilisation, periscope camera and ZEISS Cinematic Video Bokeh.
Those claims belong in three separate categories: partnership and engineering cooperation, listed hardware and software features, and actual photographic output. Only independent testing can establish whether the final images outperform competitors across scenes and users.
Another Daniel Goetz interview says vivo regards camera functions as especially important to European consumers, who may value natural-looking photos and videos of landscapes, family and friends. Imaging is also easy to demonstrate in advertising, while ZEISS supplies premium technical associations. It is reasonable to infer that camera differentiation can help justify a higher price even when a phone does not use the newest processor; that is an analysis, not a stated causal finding by vivo.

Europe is not one market
France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the UK differ in carrier relationships, retail concentration, language, regulation, consumer preferences and after-sales expectations. A model’s availability in selected launch countries should not be presented as continent-wide coverage. Country-by-country analysis would require local shipment, pricing, channel and support data that the interview does not provide.
What the interview proves—and what it cannot prove
Established by the available sources
- vivo announced entry into six European countries in October 2020.
- The company reported pre-launch interviews with 9,000 European consumers.
- Goetz described localised product planning, selective launches and portfolio segmentation.
- vivo promoted Aura Light, charging, durability and camera features in the V29 range.
- The X90 Pro+ was not launched internationally in the product context discussed.
- vivo and ZEISS described cooperation on smartphone imaging.
Still unanswered
- European shipments, market share, revenue and profitability;
- country-level sell-through and brand consideration;
- returns, repairs, satisfaction and software-support performance;
- independent Aura Light, camera, battery and chipset testing;
- the precise commercial reason for each regional model decision.
Calling vivo’s European expansion a “success story” therefore reflects publisher and interviewee framing. The stronger conclusion is that the interview documents vivo’s intended playbook: local research, selective expansion, imaging differentiation, partnerships and carefully assembled feature packages.
How to use this information when considering a vivo phone in 2026
The V29, V29 Lite and X90 Pro were 2023-era reference points, not automatically current recommendations. Before buying, verify the exact country model, network bands, software-support commitment, current price, warranty, repair route, battery condition and availability. Buyers who prioritise long-term updates, broad support and resale may prefer Samsung’s Galaxy A series; computational photography may favour Google’s Pixel A series; specification-per-price shoppers may examine Xiaomi Redmi or POCO; and charging and performance buyers may consider OnePlus Nord. Current prices and specifications require a country- and date-specific check.
