1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA used computer is worth buying only if you can verify what it is, confirm it will run the software you need, rule out account or management locks, and test its condition before paying. This guide is current as of August 18, 2026. One important change since the title’s original 2024 date: Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so a PC that cannot run a supported operating system needs a clear alternative plan.
Use the checks below as buying gates, not just a cosmetic checklist. A machine that boots can still be locked, unsafe, unreliable, or more expensive to repair than a better-supported alternative.
Before you meet the seller: set your requirements and price ceiling
1. Match the computer to your workload
Write down what you will actually do: web and office work, school, programming, photo or video editing, gaming, CAD, music production, or travel on battery power. That determines which processor, graphics hardware, memory, display, and battery condition matter. An “i7,” “Ryzen 7,” or “gaming” label is not a performance guarantee; generation, cooling, power limits, and the exact configuration all count.
Microsoft’s general laptop shopping guidance puts ordinary-use systems broadly around 8–16 GB of RAM and 256 GB–1 TB or more of storage. These are shopping guidelines, not universal minimums; demanding applications can need more. See Microsoft’s laptop buying guide.

2. Research the exact model and likely repair costs
Before agreeing to meet, look up the model’s operating-system support, port capabilities, memory and storage upgrade options, common faults, and replacement-part availability. Check current prices for likely needs such as a battery, charger, SSD, screen, keyboard, fan, or hinge. The same product-family name can cover configurations with very different performance and repair costs.
3. Set a repair-adjusted offer ceiling
Compare the asking price with similar working machines and calculate the full cost, rather than treating a low listing price as a bargain:
Realistic total cost = purchase price + travel or shipping + tax + missing accessories + expected repairs + license costs + data migration.
Then compare that figure with a newer used model, a manufacturer-backed refurbisher, or a repairable alternative. A return window or warranty can be worth paying more for, particularly when a fault may not appear during a brief inspection.

4. Identify the exact model and configuration
Record the manufacturer, full model number, generation or year, CPU, RAM, storage type and capacity, GPU, screen size and resolution, operating-system edition, and serial number or service tag. “Dell Latitude,” “HP Pavilion,” or “MacBook Pro” alone is not enough to establish what you are buying.
- Windows: Open
Settings > System > About. For detailed system information, runmsinfo32. In PowerShell, these commands provide a quick summary:Get-CimInstance Win32_ComputerSystem,Get-CimInstance Win32_Processor, andGet-CimInstance Win32_LogicalDisk. - Mac: Open
Apple menu > About This Mac, then selectSystem Reportfor detailed hardware information.
Compare the displayed configuration with the listing and the serial number on the machine. Microsoft also recommends checking a device’s specifications against the work you intend to do in its laptop buying guide.
5. Confirm the operating system will remain usable
As of August 18, 2026, Microsoft has ended free Windows Update security fixes, technical assistance, and software updates for Windows 10; support ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10-only PC is therefore a significant security and compatibility concern unless you have a specific supported alternative plan. Check the exact model’s upgrade path rather than assuming an older PC can move to Windows 11. Microsoft’s dated support information is available here.

Microsoft’s stated Windows 11 minimums include a compatible 64-bit processor at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a display of at least 720p and 9 inches. These are minimum installation requirements, not recommendations for a comfortable experience. Check eligibility with Microsoft’s PC Health Check rather than judging from a CPU name alone. Do not treat bypassing requirements as a normal fix: unsupported installations can bring update, driver, security, and resale risks. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements.

For a Mac, verify that the exact model supports the macOS version and applications you need. Support depends on the model and operating system, so a family name is not enough.
6. Verify Windows activation and license legitimacy
On a Windows PC, open Settings > System > Activation and confirm the edition as well as activation status. Home and Pro differ in features that may matter for business use. Activation alone does not prove that a copy of Windows is genuine. Ask the seller to explain the license source; be wary of vague claims such as “preactivated” or unusually cheap Windows keys. Microsoft describes activation and refurbished-device license considerations here and guidance on genuine Windows here.
7. Rule out account, firmware, and organization locks
A reset can remove files without clearing Apple Activation Lock, Windows organizational enrollment, mobile-device management, BIOS or UEFI passwords, firmware locks, or drive encryption for which no recovery key is available. Ask the seller to erase the device and let you reach its initial setup screen. A Windows PC should not demand an employer’s or school’s credentials during setup; a Mac must not request someone else’s Apple Account to activate.
For a former work or school computer, ask for proof that it was decommissioned and removed from management, plus confirmation that any BIOS administrator password has been removed. “You can remove the lock later” is not adequate. Treat an unresolved lock as a reason to walk away.
8. Verify ownership and provenance
Ask where the computer came from, whether the seller is the original owner, whether a receipt or asset-transfer record is available, and whether the motherboard or display has been replaced. Check that the serial number is present and consistent across the machine, firmware, operating system, and paperwork where those records are available. Also ask whether the charger is original or third-party.
Be cautious if the serial number is scratched off, the seller will not show it, the price is far below comparable listings, or the seller pressures you to pay immediately or outside the platform. Gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, and unusual overpayment-and-refund stories are warning signs. For local purchases, meet somewhere safe and test before paying; for shipped purchases, use a platform with clear dispute and return terms.

Inspect the hardware in person
9. Examine the case, hinges, screws, and battery area
In bright light, check for cracks, gaps, bulges, loose hinges, separated bezels, bent ports, missing feet or screws, damaged bottom panels, pry marks, corrosion, liquid residue, sticky keys, and discoloration. Scratches may be cosmetic; a cracked hinge or warped chassis can damage a display cable or motherboard. Look for a lifting palm rest or other signs of a swollen battery. A swollen battery is a safety issue: do not use or charge the machine, and do not treat it as an ordinary bargaining point.
For a desktop, inspect dust, missing expansion-slot covers, loose graphics-card brackets, damaged ports, improvised wiring, and signs of heat or heavy use. Later checks on power supply and graphics hardware are especially important for desktops.
10. Test the display and lid movement
Show a white, black, red, green, and blue screen, using a test image or a plain page, and look for dead or stuck pixels, uneven brightness, flicker, lines, color shifts, image retention, pressure marks, or cracks. For touchscreens, test the full surface for dead zones. Move a laptop lid through its normal range; an image that cuts out as it moves can point to a damaged hinge or display cable.
Note the built-in panel’s resolution, refresh rate, brightness, finish, touch capability, and—on OLED screens—any burn-in. Microsoft defines FHD as 1920×1080 and 4K as 3840×2160, but resolution by itself does not tell you brightness, contrast, color accuracy, or comfort. See Microsoft’s display guidance.
11. Test the keyboard, pointing devices, and biometrics
Open a text editor and type with every key, including function and brightness or volume keys, arrows, modifiers, number pad, and Caps Lock. Check the backlight and indicator lights. Test trackpad clicks and gestures, any included mouse, touchscreen accuracy, fingerprint reader, Windows Hello camera or infrared sensor, and Mac Touch ID.
Multiple failed keys can make a laptop expensive to repair, especially when the keyboard is integrated into the top case. Confirm that the features you rely on actually work rather than assuming they do because they appear in the listing.

Bring known-good accessories if possible: a flash drive, USB-C charger, display adapter or cable, headphones, Ethernet cable, and SD card. Test USB-A and USB-C data, USB-C charging, advertised Thunderbolt, HDMI or DisplayPort, headphone and microphone jacks, Ethernet, card readers, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, webcam, microphone, and speakers.
Do not assume USB-C means that a port supports charging, video output, Thunderbolt, or a particular data speed. Confirm capabilities for the exact model. On a desktop, test front and rear ports separately.

13. Check the charger and power delivery
Inspect the charger plug and cable, then confirm that charging remains stable while you gently move the connector as you normally would. A missing or incorrect adapter can cost money and may cause reduced performance or failure to charge. For USB-C charging, verify that the computer accepts the adapter you plan to use.
14. Inspect fans, vents, and cooling behavior
Check vents for blockage and listen for rattling, grinding, clicking, fan pulsing, coil whine, fans that never spin under load, or fans that stay at maximum while idle. Watch for burning smells or signs of overheating. Do not use a single temperature threshold as a universal pass/fail rule: acceptable behavior depends on the exact processor, graphics hardware, chassis, room temperature, and workload.

15. Evaluate battery capacity and charging behavior
For a laptop, inspect reported battery health and observe how it behaves unplugged. On Windows, open an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell and run powercfg /batteryreport. Windows displays where it saved the HTML report. Compare design capacity with full-charge capacity and review recent usage and cycle information where available. The report may be less informative after a reset or when the computer lacks enough usage history.
On a Mac, Option-click the Apple menu and open System Information > Hardware > Power. Review cycle count, condition, full-charge capacity, and any service recommendation. There is no universal battery percentage or cycle count that makes a used laptop acceptable: weigh usable capacity and replacement cost, and treat physical swelling as a stop condition. Do not rely on a seller’s promised number of runtime hours; brightness, workload, wireless use, power settings, and age affect results. Microsoft notes that advertised battery-life figures may come from manufacturers or retailers and are not necessarily comparable real-world measurements in its laptop buying guide.
16. Identify the storage and check its health
Determine whether the computer uses a SATA hard drive, SATA SSD, NVMe SSD, eMMC, or multiple drives. In Windows, check Settings > System > Storage and Task Manager > Performance > Disk. A SMART-capable diagnostic can reveal drive health, reallocated or pending sectors, uncorrectable errors, percentage used or lifetime remaining, temperature, unsafe shutdowns, and total host writes when reported.
The command wmic diskdrive get model, status is only a basic check, not a complete SMART test; “status OK” does not prove a drive is healthy. Use a reputable SMART reader or the drive maker’s utility when available, and consider the results alongside performance and error history. Avoid destructive or full-surface testing while the seller’s data is on the drive. A degraded drive, failing hard disk, or nearly full low-capacity drive should be priced as a replacement project.

17. Check memory capacity and upgradeability
Verify installed RAM, available slots, soldered versus replaceable memory, maximum supported capacity, generation, speed, and whether the configuration is single- or dual-channel. In Windows, open Task Manager > Performance > Memory. For more detail, use PowerShell:

Do not assume an 8 GB laptop can be upgraded; many thin models have soldered memory. Conversely, an older business laptop with accessible memory may be inexpensive to improve. Choose capacity for your applications: Microsoft’s broad 8–16 GB or more shopping range is not a universal minimum or a substitute for checking software requirements. See Microsoft’s guidance.
18. Confirm CPU and GPU suit the work you intend to do
Record the full processor and graphics models, then compare them with the requirements for your applications or games. Check CPU generation and cores, integrated versus discrete graphics, dedicated GPU memory, driver support, and whether the GPU is replaceable. Laptop graphics with the same model name can perform differently because of power limits and cooling. A discrete GPU is necessary for some editing, rendering, CAD, or AI workloads, but not for every computer user. Match the hardware to the actual software rather than a marketing tier; Microsoft makes the same workload-first point in its laptop buying guidance.
19. Run a sustained workload and test everyday components
After getting permission to use the machine, run a representative workload for about 10–20 minutes: several browser tabs and video, a large file copy, an application you use, or a game or 3D test for a gaming PC. Watch for shutdowns, blue screens or kernel panics, severe throttling, artifacting, freezes, charger disconnects, or performance that collapses under load. A short boot test will not reveal all of these problems.
Test the webcam, microphone, left and right speakers, headphone output, screen rotation where applicable, ambient-light and lid sensors, and face or fingerprint authentication. Make a short recording and play it back; listen for crackling, distortion, imbalance, or intermittent input. These components can be costly or difficult to replace in a modern laptop.
Complete platform-specific checks
20. Have the seller erase the device and demonstrate a clean setup
Do not accept the seller’s files, browser accounts, password managers, or cloud credentials as proof of a clean machine. Ideally, the seller erases the computer in front of you and you reach the initial setup screen before paying.
- Windows: The seller can open
Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PCand select the appropriate option to remove their data. Continue far enough through setup to check that no organization’s credentials are required. - Mac: The seller should sign out of their Apple Account, turn off Find My, erase the Mac, and leave it at Setup Assistant. On supported Macs, Erase All Content and Settings is preferable; older systems may need manual sign-out and macOS reinstallation.
Apple says Activation Lock can prevent another person from turning off Find My, erasing, or reactivating a Mac without the owner’s credentials. If setup requests another person’s Apple Account, do not buy the Mac. See Apple’s Activation Lock guidance. If the seller no longer has the Mac, Apple describes removing it from Find My through iCloud at this support page; verify removal before purchase rather than taking it on trust.
For repaired Macs, ask whether used replacement parts were installed. Apple warns that previously used parts—including batteries, displays, cameras, or Touch ID components—may remain linked to another Apple Account and require Repair Assistant or removal of Activation Lock. See Apple’s used-parts guidance. A hardware diagnostic can help investigate faults, but it does not prove the Mac is free of Activation Lock; Apple’s repair and support options are listed at Apple Support.
Extra checks for desktops
Desktops do not need a battery or hinge inspection, but their power delivery and upgrade path deserve extra attention. Check the power-supply manufacturer, wattage, condition, and connectors against the CPU and graphics card. A low-quality or underpowered PSU can make a used gaming PC an expensive rebuild. Inspect the GPU, card bracket, fans, dust, expansion slots, drive bays, connectors, and available RAM slots. Verify that planned upgrades fit the case and are supported by the motherboard and power supply.
Decide whether to buy, negotiate, or walk away
| Decision | Use it when | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Buy | The exact configuration is verified, the operating system is supported or has a clear supported path, locks are cleared, essential functions pass, and the repair-adjusted total is attractive. | Keep the receipt and listing, confirm the return terms, and complete setup with your own account. |
| Negotiate | The fault is known, repairable, and priced into the deal—for example, a worn but replaceable battery, small healthy replaceable SSD, upgradeable low RAM, missing easy-to-source charger, or non-structural cosmetic wear. | Deduct the realistic repair and accessory cost from your offer ceiling. |
| Walk away | Activation Lock or organizational enrollment remains; serial or ownership details are suspicious; the battery is swollen; Windows licensing is doubtful; storage has serious warnings; the screen is severely damaged; or the computer crashes, overheats, or artifacts under load. | Do not pay on a promise that the seller will resolve the issue later. |
| Choose a refurbisher | The seller will not permit basic testing, there is no meaningful return protection, or the repair-adjusted private-sale price is close to a safer alternative. | Compare the written test procedure, battery threshold, parts policy, cosmetic grade, license, warranty, and return terms. “Refurbished” is not a universal quality grade. |
For any purchase, prefer a written return period, warranty, documented condition grade, clear battery policy, serial-number lookup, protected payment, and disclosure of replaced parts. A brief inspection is not a substitute for a return window that lets you test the computer over several days.
