That was a striking moment in the company’s expansion—not a description of its position today. In IDC’s latest figures, for Q1 2026, OPPO ranked fourth globally, with shipments down 9.9% year over year.
For consumers, the distinction matters: OPPO is still a major phone maker, but its appeal and availability depend on the model and market. Here is how it grew, what it sells, and what to check before spending money on one of its phones.
What is OPPO?
OPPO is a Chinese smart-device company whose smartphone portfolio includes the premium Find line, the design- and camera-oriented Reno range, and more affordable A-series models. The company says its first mobile phone, the “Smiley Face,” launched in 2008. In its 2025 sustainability report, OPPO said it operated in more than 90 countries and regions, employed more than 40,000 people, and offered smartphones, ColorOS software, and internet services. Those are company-reported figures, not independent market estimates. OPPO’s 2025 sustainability report provides its account of the business.
OPPO is best understood as a global brand with uneven local reach. It has a significant presence across Asia and other international markets, but a product listed on its global site is not necessarily sold or supported in every country. Corporate relationships among OPPO, realme, OnePlus, and other brands can also be complex; they should not be treated as interchangeable brands when comparing products or market statistics.

Why OPPO was called the fastest-growing smartphone brand
The label came from a specific quarter. On July 29, 2016, Computerworld reported IDC figures showing OPPO smartphone shipments rose 137% year over year in Q2 2016. The company shipped 22.6 million phones, held 6.6% of the global market, and ranked fourth behind Samsung, Apple, and Huawei. The growth rate was exceptional, but it did not make OPPO the market leader: it was fourth by shipments. The original 2016 coverage also noted that OPPO did not sell directly in the United States at that time and cited an online price of about $434 for the F1 Plus. That price and availability describe the period, not today.
OPPO’s pitch at the time combined attractive design and features associated with pricier phones with lower prices. Its stronger base in China and other Asian markets gave it room to grow before the brand became familiar to buyers in more regions. That combination helps explain the surge, but no single phone or feature alone accounts for the company’s rise.
How OPPO built its business
Regional retail and localization
OPPO’s expansion relied on more than online visibility. Its strategy has emphasized in-person retail, local marketing, and relationships with distributors and carriers. That approach can make a brand easier to discover and buy in markets where shoppers value store demonstrations or local service. Market-by-market execution also matters: a phone, promotion, or carrier relationship that works in one country may not translate directly to another.

Features that make mid-range phones feel premium
OPPO has used camera features, design, displays, and fast charging to distinguish phones across price tiers. The broader business logic is straightforward: deliver visible features that shoppers can compare in a store or in product listings, then tailor the lineup to different budgets. The company now positions Find as its flagship family, Reno for design-conscious buyers, and A-series models for more price-sensitive customers.

Photography has been central to OPPO’s positioning, from portrait-focused phones to high-resolution cameras on newer models. Camera specifications can signal ambition, but megapixel counts do not establish image quality on their own. Sensor size, lenses, processing, and performance in real-world conditions also matter, so manufacturer claims should be weighed against independent tests of the particular model.
OPPO’s phones and software today
| Line or product | Typical role | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Find | Premium flagship and technology showcase | Includes high-end camera, display, performance, and charging features; exact specifications vary by model. |
| Reno | Design- and camera-oriented mainstream range | Often emphasizes portraits, video, appearance, and battery life, with a position below Find in the lineup. |
| A series | More price-sensitive buyers | Provides lower-cost options; features and availability depend on the market and model. |
| ColorOS | OPPO’s Android-based software interface | Version, included features, and update timing can vary by phone and region. |
OPPO’s global catalog has listed Find X9 phones, Find N foldables, Reno models, and A-series devices. The company’s listing has also shown some products as out of stock, so an online product page does not guarantee local inventory. Find X9 Pro: a snapshot of OPPO’s flagship ambitions
The Find X9 Pro illustrates how far OPPO’s positioning has moved beyond an inexpensive-phone reputation. Its specification page lists a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with refresh rates up to 120Hz, a MediaTek Dimensity 9500 processor, a configuration with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, and a 7,500mAh typical-capacity battery. It lists 80W wired and 50W wireless charging, a 200MP telephoto camera, ColorOS 16, and IP66, IP68, and IP69 resistance claims. These are listed specifications and manufacturer claims; they are not independent performance, camera, or durability test results. See the Find X9 Pro specifications and product page.
OPPO promotes the Find X9 Pro with a Hasselblad-branded camera system, 4K 120fps video, AI features, and cross-device functions. ColorOS 16 launch materials describe features including AI Mind Space, AI Recorder titles and summaries, AI Portrait Glow, and O+ Connect for Windows and Mac. Availability and supported devices may differ by market, model, and software version. OPPO’s launch information for the Find X9 series and ColorOS 16 describes the advertised functions; it should not be read as an independent usability assessment.

What ColorOS means for buyers
ColorOS is OPPO’s Android-based interface and a layer for its own services and connected-device features. Features promoted for ColorOS 16 include animation and rendering updates, AI tools, and cross-device functions. As with other phone software, what appears on a device depends on its model, regional software build, and updates. OPPO’s comparison page notes that the ColorOS version can vary and may require an update; confirm the version and supported features for the exact device before buying: OPPO’s comparison tool.
Where OPPO stands in 2026
IDC’s Q1 2026 figures place OPPO fourth among the vendors in its global table. Its 30.7 million shipments represented 10.5% market share, but shipments declined 9.9% year over year. IDC described the broader market as facing memory-supply constraints and higher component costs. The figures measure shipments, not phones sold directly to consumers, and the rankings apply to IDC’s stated vendor definitions.
| Vendor | Q1 2026 shipments | Global share | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung | 62.4 million | 21.2% | +2.9% |
| Apple | 61.8 million | 21.0% | +4.4% |
| Xiaomi | 33.8 million | 11.5% | −19.1% |
| OPPO | 30.7 million | 10.5% | −9.9% |
| vivo | 21.2 million | 7.2% | −6.9% |
IDC’s smartphone market-share figures show why the 2016 superlative should not be carried forward as a current ranking. IDC also said OPPO’s Q1 2026 performance was stronger in China than internationally, while Honor had the fastest growth among the top ten vendors in that quarter, at 24.9%.

“Fastest-growing” depends on the measure
A growth claim is only useful when it states what grew, where, and over what period. Smartphone shipments, market share, revenue, premium-segment sales, and average selling price are different measures. A company can grow the average price of the phones it sells even as the number of phones shipped falls.
OPPO says Counterpoint measured a 14% year-over-year increase in its average selling price in Q2 2025, which OPPO described as the fastest increase among leading brands. That is a company-reported claim about average selling price—not evidence that OPPO led the industry in shipment growth or overall size. OPPO’s announcement attributes the measure to Counterpoint.
There have also been narrower historical claims: a 2019 announcement described OPPO as the fastest-growing smartphone brand in the premium segment in 2018. Such a statement is limited to a segment and period, not a timeless ranking of all brands. The 2019 announcement gives that claim’s context.
What to check before buying an OPPO phone
Whether OPPO makes sense for you depends less on its historic growth rate than on local price, support, and the phone’s fit for your needs. Buyers who prioritize camera hardware, large batteries, fast charging, or premium displays may find models worth comparing—especially in markets where the brand has strong official distribution.
- Local price and stock: Check the price for the exact model and configuration from an authorized seller in your country. OPPO’s global catalog is not a guarantee of local inventory.
- Network compatibility: Confirm the regional model supports the LTE and 5G bands used by your carrier. OPPO’s specification page lists multiple network versions and warns that actual network functionality depends on live network conditions and regional service deployment.
- Warranty and repairs: Ask whether local service covers the specific regional version. A phone imported from another country may not qualify for local warranty support.
- Software and services: Check the ColorOS version, update status, and availability of the features and apps you rely on. Regional builds can differ.
- Independent reviews: Treat advertised camera, battery, charging, and durability specifications as starting points. Look for independent tests of the exact model rather than inferring results from a headline specification.
- Total cost: Compare the local price against Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, vivo, Honor, and OnePlus phones with similar storage and support. A premium OPPO may compete in price with established alternatives rather than automatically offering a bargain.
OPPO’s global footprint does not mean its phones are equally easy to buy everywhere, particularly in the United States. For imported models, local carrier compatibility, warranty coverage, and software support deserve as much scrutiny as the hardware.
