How to Get Store Ratings in Google Search

Use Google Customer Reviews or a supported review partner to collect eligible store feedback, then check country, domain, and placement requirements. Google controls where ratings appear.

To get an overall store rating associated with your business on Google, activate Google Customer Reviews in Merchant Center and add its survey opt-in to every order-confirmation path, or work with a review partner Google currently supports. Collect eligible customer feedback for each target country and keep the rated store domain consistent. Google decides whether and where a rating appears; setup does not guarantee stars beside every search result or ad.

First, identify which Google rating you want

“Google reviews” can mean several different things. The collection method and where stars can appear depend on which one you want.

Rating type What it rates Where it may appear
Store or seller rating The overall shopping experience with your retailer Search text ads, Shopping surfaces, free product listings, and other Google surfaces when eligible
Product Rating A particular product, rather than the retailer Shopping ads and free product listings, subject to eligibility and product matching
Google Business Profile review A local business profile Google surfaces that show Business Profile information; it is a separate system from ecommerce store ratings
Organic review snippet A page or entity represented by structured data Potentially an organic search result when Google chooses to show a rich result; it is not the store-rating program

Google distinguishes ratings of a retailer from ratings of individual products. If you want product stars, use the Product Ratings route below rather than treating store reviews as a substitute. Google’s Store ratings and Product Ratings guidance explains the distinction.

The free route: Google Customer Reviews

Google Customer Reviews is a free program managed through Merchant Center. After checkout, customers can choose to opt in to a survey invitation. A customer who opts in may receive a survey after the estimated delivery date, asking them to rate the purchase experience from one to five stars and optionally leave a comment. Google can use eligible feedback in its store-rating systems; it may also use other review sources and its own evaluations. See Google’s explanation of the opt-in and survey.

#1 Best Overall
Google Pixel 11 Pro - Unlocked Smartphone, Gemini - 256 GB - Obsidian
  • Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
  • Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
  • Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
  • Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]

The opt-in should be presented consistently to customers, not selectively shown only to people you expect to leave positive feedback. The optional store widget (previously called the badge) is a separate on-site display element: it can communicate participation and show a rating when available, but it is not the mechanism that collects survey responses or causes stars to appear in Search. Google’s store widget instructions cover its placement.

Check the checkout requirements before activating

The opt-in belongs on the order-confirmation page. Google’s integration requirements include a separate confirmation page, HTTPS, JavaScript support, and the ability to add code to the page. The document must begin with the HTML5 doctype, with no whitespace or comments before it. If a payment provider temporarily hosts checkout, customers should return to a confirmation page on your own site. Review Google’s integration instructions and program guidelines before implementation.

  • You must be able to place code on the confirmation page and populate it with actual order data.
  • The opt-in needs to work on desktop and mobile checkout paths, including guest, express, and third-party payment flows where applicable.
  • Use the correct Merchant Center website and store domain consistently. A mismatch can make it harder for Google to associate feedback with the intended store.

Set up Google Customer Reviews

  1. Open Merchant Center. Use an existing account if you have one; otherwise create one. Verify your account and claim your website.
  2. Activate the add-on. In Merchant Center, go to Settings → Add-ons → Discover, find Google Customer Reviews, then select Activate. Complete the program agreement. Google’s current path is also described in Configure your account and About onboarding and integration.
  3. Add the survey opt-in module. Place the code on the order-confirmation page, immediately before the closing </body> tag, following Google’s integration instructions. Implement it for both desktop and mobile.
  4. Populate the fields dynamically. Use your Merchant Center ID, a unique order ID, the customer’s email, a two-letter ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 delivery-country code (for example, US), and the estimated delivery date in YYYY-MM-DD format. The delivery date is not the order or shipping date: Google uses it to determine when a survey invitation may be sent.
  5. Test each checkout route. Verify that the opt-in appears after successful orders on every relevant device and payment path, and that the submitted values correspond to the actual order. Do not publish sample IDs or customer data as production values.
  6. Optionally add the store widget. Add it only if you want an on-site display. Its availability does not guarantee a Google Search placement.

This representative code shows the required pattern; replace every example value with a securely populated value from the actual order. The script should be placed just before </body>, and the document must start with the doctype shown.

Check whether Google has a rating for your store

Google provides a store-rating lookup page. Replace the example with your homepage URL; add a country code to inspect a specific market:

  • https://www.google.com/storepages?q=YOUR-HOMEPAGE-URL&c=US

Use the relevant homepage domain, particularly if you operate country-specific sites. If no rating page appears, check that the URL is valid and that you are using the right country. Google may not have enough eligible information for that domain or market. A store-rating page existing also does not mean the rating will appear beside a particular ad.

For reporting on Google Customer Reviews itself, open Reviews under Activity in Merchant Center, then select the Google Customer Reviews tab and a country if needed. The dashboard reports opt-ins, surveys offered, responses, and store rating. Opt-ins, survey delivery, customer responses, and rating updates happen at different stages, so an opt-in count is not the same as a response count. Details are in Google’s dashboard instructions.

How many reviews do you need?

Google does not publish one review-count rule that guarantees a rating across every country and surface. Its guidance varies with the rating product and placement:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Google says most merchants can obtain a store rating after collecting 100 or more eligible reviews, but the number needed to calculate a score confidently varies by merchant and country. This is guidance, not a promise. See Google’s store-rating badge guidance.
  • For the Google Customer Reviews badge, Google says that in most cases 150 reviews during the past year are needed for a rating to appear. That is badge-specific guidance, not a universal threshold for every Search or Shopping result. See About store ratings.
  • Google documents a minimum composite score of 3.5 stars for a store-rating annotation to show with Search text ads. That rule is specific to the ad annotation; it should not be applied to all unpaid placements. See Google Ads’ shop-rating guidance.

Google’s documentation also describes different review lookback periods for different store-rating contexts. Treat the relevant country and surface as part of the threshold question rather than assuming that a single worldwide total qualifies you everywhere.

Why ratings may not show

What you see What to check
The opt-in does not appear Confirm the code is on the actual confirmation page, the page is HTTPS and starts with the required doctype, JavaScript is not stripped, and the code runs on mobile and desktop. Check the browser console and test guest, express, and third-party checkout paths. A third-party checkout should return the customer to your own confirmation page.
Opt-ins appear, but few surveys or responses do Survey invitations may be sent after the estimated delivery date, and not every opt-in necessarily results in a survey. Check that the delivery estimate is accurate and that email and country values are valid.
Reviews are being collected, but no rating is visible Google needs enough eligible reviews to calculate a score for the relevant country and surface. Allow time for processing; store ratings are not updated in real time. Google filters questionable data and aggregates multiple sources.
A rating appears in one country but not another Store ratings are country-specific. Check the country view and domain used for that market; reviews associated with one country do not automatically establish the same rating elsewhere.
The store rating exists but does not appear with a Search ad Check the documented 3.5-star composite minimum, rated-domain and visible-ad-domain match, target country, and ad eligibility. The auction and Google’s systems decide whether an annotation serves for a particular ad.
The wrong store seems associated with a domain Compare the website claimed in Merchant Center, the review source’s store identity, and the domain used in ads or listings. Correct identity or domain mismatches with the relevant partner or Merchant Center setup.
You expected stars on an ordinary organic page Store ratings are not the same as review snippets generated from structured data. Google Customer Reviews does not guarantee organic review stars for a webpage.

Google says merchants cannot reply to individual store reviews through Merchant Center; responses must be handled on the site hosting the review, and merchant responses are not currently shown in the store-rating result. Google also applies filtering to untrustworthy or questionable data rather than simply displaying every submitted review. See Google’s store ratings overview.

Google Customer Reviews or a review partner?

Start with Google Customer Reviews if you want a no-cost, Google-managed way to collect post-purchase store feedback and can implement the checkout module. A supported review partner may make more sense if you need automated invitations, moderation, analytics, on-site review displays, product-review syndication, or reputation management across channels.

Route Advantages Trade-offs
Google Customer Reviews Free; direct collection through Google; useful baseline for post-purchase store feedback Requires checkout integration; customers must opt in and respond; review volume can build slowly
Supported review partner May add review automation, moderation, analytics, displays, or syndication Often paid; support and data transmission must be confirmed; a partner does not guarantee Google visibility
Google-led evaluation Google may gather shopping feedback through its own evaluations Not a collection route a merchant can reliably trigger or control

Before choosing a vendor, confirm in Google’s current supported-partner information that it is still supported and that it transmits eligible reviews for your domain, business identity, country, and intended Google surface. Do not choose a service solely on a promise to guarantee stars or rankings.

If you want stars on individual products

Product Ratings are a separate Merchant Center program. To submit a product-review source, Google requires at least 50 reviews across all products, a complete and updated review feed at least monthly, and review URLs that match the Merchant Center domain. Onboarding can take several weeks. Accurate product matching matters: provide GTINs where available; Google may also try SKU, brand plus MPN, and product URLs. See Product Ratings eligibility and Product Ratings policies.

Submit comprehensive, authentic review data rather than only favorable reviews. Avoid review gating, fabricated feedback, and employee reviews; a star rating is useful only when the underlying collection is trustworthy and policy-compliant.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
