The Sony WH-1000XM4 sold for $198 on Amazon in a promotion reported September 5, 2025—about 43% below the cited $349 price. That deal is historical, not proof of an August 2026 offer. Check Amazon’s live listing for the current price, condition, seller and return terms before buying. At a verified $198 for a new pair, the older flagship remains a strong value; at $300–$350, compare it closely with Sony’s newer WH-1000XM6.
What the $198 Amazon deal actually confirms
Phandroid reported the WH-1000XM4 at $198 on Amazon on September 5, 2025, against a stated regular price of $349—approximately 43.3% off, or $151 saved. Sony’s U.S. product page lists the XM4 at $349.99 MSRP, making the mathematical difference $151.99, or about 43.4%.
The report does not establish that Amazon still offers $198 in August 2026. It also does not identify whether the promotion covered new inventory, a specific color, a coupon, Amazon Renewed, used stock or a particular marketplace seller. Shipping, tax and membership requirements could change the checkout total.
Verify the live offer at the original deal report for its date and then inspect Amazon’s current listing directly. Do not treat the old headline price as guaranteed availability.

What you get with the WH-1000XM4
The XM4 is a closed-back, over-ear wireless headphone with active noise cancellation, USB-C charging and a detachable cable for wired listening. Sony’s specifications list the following:
- Up to 30 hours with noise canceling enabled, or up to 38 hours with it disabled.
- Approximately three hours for a full charge.
- About five hours of playback after a 10-minute quick charge.
- Bluetooth 5.0 with SBC, AAC and LDAC codecs.
- Multipoint pairing for two devices at once.
- DSEE Extreme upscaling, Ambient Sound mode, Speak-to-Chat, Quick Attention and touch controls.
- Foldable construction and a carrying case.
See Sony’s official specifications and product page. The 30- and 38-hour figures are maximum manufacturer ratings; an older, used or long-stored battery may deliver less. LDAC also requires a compatible phone, computer and playback settings.

Why the XM4 can still make sense
The XM4 is no longer Sony’s newest flagship, but its feature set remains unusually complete at a discount. Travelers and office workers get over-ear ANC, long rated battery life and multipoint switching. Buyers who use Sony’s app can adjust listening modes and equalization, while LDAC supports higher-bitrate Bluetooth playback when the source device supports it.
Its value is primarily financial: you are buying mature flagship features for much less than the latest generation, not buying current-generation hardware. Comfort, clamping force, heat and call performance vary by listener and should not be assumed from the product’s premium positioning alone.

Prices and specifications can change. Sony’s XM6 pages are here and here. The newer model should be considered for its newer processing and design; the available sources do not establish that it wins every performance category.
Amazon checklist before you buy
- Confirm the model is WH-1000XM4, the over-ear headphone—not the in-ear WF-1000XM4.
- Make sure the condition is New if you are evaluating a new-product deal. Separate New, Used, Open-box, Amazon Renewed and third-party refurbished offers.
- Check both “Sold by” and “Ships from.” An imported or gray-market unit may have different warranty support.
- Verify the exact color and whether a clipped coupon, Prime membership or checkout promotion is required.
- Read the return window and warranty language, especially for renewed or marketplace inventory.
- Compare the final checkout total, including shipping and tax, with the headline price.
- Review recent buyer comments for packaging, missing accessories, battery condition and counterfeit concerns.
- Recheck stock immediately before ordering because Amazon prices and sellers can change quickly.
Who should buy at $198—and who should wait
Buy when these conditions are met
- The live listing is new, or renewed with a meaningful warranty and easy returns.
- The seller has clear provenance and acceptable feedback.
- You want over-ear ANC, multipoint and LDAC more than the newest Sony hardware.
- The XM6’s higher price would materially exceed your budget.
Pay more for newer hardware when
- You specifically want Sony’s latest ANC platform, QN3 processing or updated microphone system.
- Call quality and long-term warranty coverage matter more than the lowest price.
- The price gap is small enough that newer hardware and battery age outweigh the savings.
Skip the listing when
- The $198 offer is used or renewed without clear battery, warranty and return protection.
- The seller or regional origin is unclear.
- You need headphones for workouts or wet outdoor use and require a strong water-resistance rating.
- Your priority is cutting-edge ANC rather than value.
Bottom line
The $198 figure is a genuine reported Amazon promotion from September 5, 2025, not a verified current August 2026 price. If Amazon shows a new, reputable listing at or near $198, the XM4’s ANC, 30-hour rated battery, multipoint and LDAC make it compelling. If the offer is renewed, used or close to $300–$350, weigh battery and warranty risk against the newer XM6 before checking out.
