Yes—Samsung ultimately owns AKG through HARMAN. Samsung Electronics acquired HARMAN International in 2017, and AKG was already one of HARMAN’s audio brands. Samsung did not purchase AKG in a separate transaction. The practical ownership chain is Samsung Electronics → HARMAN International → AKG.
The ownership chain in one view
AKG is best described as a HARMAN-owned audio brand within Samsung Electronics’ corporate group:
Samsung Electronics
↓
HARMAN International
↓
AKG
That wording separates three things often collapsed into one. Samsung Electronics is the ultimate parent, HARMAN is the immediate corporate parent and operating group, and AKG remains the consumer and professional audio brand customers see on headphones, microphones and wireless systems.
HARMAN’s current company information describes it as a wholly owned Samsung subsidiary and lists AKG among its brands: HARMAN company information.

Did Samsung buy AKG directly?
No. Samsung announced on November 14, 2016, that it would acquire 100% of HARMAN International Industries for $112 per share, an equity value of approximately $8 billion. The transaction closed on March 11, 2017. The acquisition disclosure identifies HARMAN as the target—not AKG as a separately acquired company.
After closing, HARMAN’s shares were delisted and HARMAN continued as a standalone Samsung subsidiary. Samsung said HARMAN would retain its workforce, headquarters, facilities and consumer and professional audio brands, including AKG. See the acquisition announcement, completion announcement and acquisition disclosure.
What HARMAN does
HARMAN is the group that manages a broad portfolio spanning consumer audio, professional audio, automotive systems, software and connected services. Samsung’s completion announcement named AKG alongside other HARMAN brands, including:
- JBL
- Harman Kardon
- Infinity
- Lexicon
- Mark Levinson
- Revel
These are sister brands in HARMAN’s portfolio, not interchangeable product lines. JBL generally emphasizes portable and lifestyle audio, Harman Kardon focuses heavily on home and premium lifestyle products, while AKG has a substantial professional-audio heritage.
Is AKG still a separate brand?
Yes, as a brand and operating identity. HARMAN retained AKG rather than replacing it with the Samsung name. AKG still operates an official store at akg.com and sells headphones, studio monitors, microphones and wireless systems.

“Separate brand” does not necessarily mean “independent company.” Corporate ownership, legal registration, trademark ownership, product design, manufacturing, distribution and customer support can involve different entities and can vary by country. The consumer-safe conclusion is that AKG is not independently owned from Samsung’s group, but it remains distinct from Samsung Electronics in branding and product identity.
Why do Galaxy products mention AKG?
Some Samsung devices use wording such as “Sound by AKG” or “Tuned by AKG.” That language is product-specific: it may refer to audio tuning, a collaboration or use of the AKG name in marketing. It does not establish that the phone or earbuds are rebadged AKG products, nor that AKG designed or manufactured every component.
Check the specifications and documentation for the exact Galaxy model. Do not generalize one generation’s AKG reference to every Samsung device.
Does Samsung manufacture every AKG product?
No such blanket conclusion is supported. Samsung owns AKG ultimately through HARMAN, but that does not prove Samsung Electronics designs, assembles or manufactures every AKG model. AKG’s catalog covers professional headphones, microphones and wireless equipment, and manufacturing arrangements can differ by product and market.
Likewise, ownership alone says nothing about sound quality, durability or engineering continuity. Those are model-level questions that require specifications, independent measurements, reviews, warranty information and return terms.

What the relationship means when you buy AKG equipment
Choose by the model’s intended use
- Closed-back headphones such as K361 or K371: generally better suited to recording, mobile listening and situations where isolation matters.
- Open-back models such as K702 or K712 Pro: intended for reference listening and mixing, but they leak sound and are poor choices for noisy travel or shared offices.
- K872: a premium closed-back reference product; its price and capabilities are difficult to justify for casual listening.
- C114 or C414 microphones: studio recording equipment, not substitutes for a phone, gaming or conference microphone.
These are category-fit observations, not hands-on performance tests.

Buy through a reliable channel
Use the official U.S. store or an authorized dealer. AKG’s authenticity guidance warns buyers about marketplace sellers and unusually low prices; verify the seller before paying, especially for premium headphones and microphones. See AKG’s authenticity guidance.
The official store advertises direct-buy benefits including free shipping, product support and extended return shipping, but terms and availability are regional and can change.
Common misconceptions
“Samsung bought AKG in 2016.”
This is shorthand, not the transaction’s structure. Samsung announced a HARMAN acquisition in 2016 and completed it in 2017; AKG came under Samsung ownership as part of HARMAN.

“AKG is just a Samsung sub-brand.”
That skips the immediate parent. The more accurate chain is Samsung Electronics → HARMAN → AKG.

It does not. Evaluate the exact model, intended use, independent measurements, warranty and return policy.

AKG existed long before Samsung’s ownership. AKG’s official product material describes nearly 70 years of expertise, and Samsung’s 2016 announcement already listed AKG as part of HARMAN’s brand portfolio. The brand was therefore not created by Samsung.

For a particular older product, check its release date, regional distributor and warranty documentation. Corporate ownership may be clear while support arrangements and legal entities differ by country and time.
Bottom line for buyers
Samsung owns AKG in the ultimate corporate sense, but HARMAN is the immediate parent and AKG remains a distinct audio brand. That relationship explains why AKG appears in Samsung’s broader audio ecosystem and why Samsung also owns sister brands such as JBL and Harman Kardon. It does not mean every AKG product is Samsung-made, every Galaxy product marked “AKG” is an AKG product, or that ownership alone predicts quality.
