Apple removed the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus and third-generation iPhone SE from its EU online stores in late December 2024, as the EU’s USB-C charging requirements took effect. The phones were not banned from ownership: existing owners could keep using them, and leftover or second-hand stock could still be available.
Which iPhones did Apple withdraw?
The affected models were the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus and third-generation iPhone SE. All use Apple’s Lightning connector. Apple’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 families, available at the time, use USB-C. The withdrawal applied to Apple’s EU sales channels, not to every iPhone 14 worldwide. 9to5Mac reported the models were no longer listed in most EU countries.

When did Apple stop selling them directly?
Apple’s online-store withdrawal happened in stages. The models were reported unavailable in Switzerland around December 20, 2024, then disappeared from Apple’s online stores in most EU countries by December 27–28. Switzerland is not an EU member; the separate withdrawal there does not make it part of the EU rule. MacRumors reported the Swiss-store change, and its later report covered Apple’s broader EU withdrawal.
That timing is why “will soon pull” is no longer accurate in 2026. Apple stopped offering the models through its own EU retail channels; it did not make every remaining phone disappear from shops on one universal date.

What did the EU USB-C rule require?
The EU’s common-charger requirements amend the Radio Equipment Directive. For covered smartphones with wired charging, USB-C became mandatory from December 28, 2024. The European Commission describes the framework and its scope on its Radio Equipment Directive page. The stated policy aims include improving charger interoperability, reducing consumer inconvenience and cutting charger waste.
The rule concerns covered products newly placed on the market after the applicable date. It is not a prohibition on owning, using or reselling every Lightning phone. Nor did it require Apple to redesign the older models: Apple withdrew them rather than continuing to introduce non-compliant new units into the affected market. The distinction between a new unit’s market-placement status and a retailer’s later sale can depend on the stock’s distribution history and applicable national rules.

Laptops had a later USB-C deadline, April 28, 2026; that date should not be confused with the smartphone deadline. The measure applied to covered devices across manufacturers, not just Apple, and did not require owners to replace working Lightning accessories.
Why withdraw the phones instead of redesigning them?
Apple could in principle have re-engineered these models with USB-C, but doing so would have meant additional engineering, manufacturing, certification, inventory and support complexity for older designs. The iPhone 14 generation was already late in its product cycle, and Apple had newer USB-C iPhones to sell. The commercial calculation is an explanation of the likely choice, not an Apple-confirmed account of its internal decision.

Reports at the time described the EU rule as bringing the iPhone 14 models’ departure forward compared with their expected product-cycle timing. That timing was an industry estimate, not an Apple-published sales schedule. MacRumors’ December 2024 report covered the planned withdrawal ahead of the deadline.
Could you still buy one after Apple removed it?
Possibly. Apple’s own online listings were gone in most EU countries, but retailer inventory and second-hand availability were separate matters. Authorized resellers could still have stock, while used and refurbished phones were not made unusable or erased from the market by the charging rule.

- Check the seller and condition: establish whether the device is genuinely new, refurbished, returned or previously activated.
- Check the financial terms: compare the price with newer USB-C models, and confirm the warranty, return window and any national consumer-law protections.
- For used or refurbished units: ask for battery health, activation status and a clear description of defects; assess the seller’s reputation and return policy.
- Consider the connector: these phones charge through Lightning, so factor in the cables and adapters you already own—or would need to keep using.
- Ask about stock status if relevant: a post-deadline sale is not automatically proof that a unit was illegally placed on the market; that question depends on the unit’s status and applicable rules.
In short, “Apple no longer sells it directly” does not mean “no retailer has one.” Availability varies by country and seller.

The right substitute depends on budget, whether the buyer wants a new device, and how much they value USB-C, newer hardware or a familiar Apple setup. Apple’s current country-specific lineup can change; check the Apple iPhone page for models actually sold where you live rather than assuming a model or price is universal.

| Option | Best suited to | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Current USB-C iPhone listed by Apple in your country | Someone who wants a new iPhone and a direct move away from Lightning | Price and model availability vary by country; verify the current lineup locally. |
| Used or refurbished iPhone 14 or third-generation SE | A buyer prioritizing a lower price, a familiar iPhone or the SE’s compact design | Lightning, older hardware and condition-dependent battery life; check warranty and return terms. |
| USB-C Android phone | A buyer prioritizing a different price range or broader hardware choice | Switching can mean trade-offs for Apple services and devices such as iMessage, Apple Watch and AirDrop. |
If you already own one of the withdrawn models, the rule itself gives you no reason to upgrade immediately. Continue using it if it meets your needs; if its battery or condition becomes the issue, compare repair costs with replacement options. Apple’s Trade In page describes trade-in and recycling options, but eligibility and value depend on the device and market.
How did the rule apply across Europe?
- EU member states: the EU common-charger framework applied to covered products placed on those markets.
- Switzerland: outside the EU; Apple also withdrew the models from its Swiss online store.
- Northern Ireland: reported as affected by relevant single-market arrangements, but it is not an EU member state.
- Great Britain: the EU requirement did not automatically apply there.
These distinctions matter: “Europe” is a geographic description, not a single regulatory market. The withdrawal coverage discussed the differing treatment outside EU member states.
What did the withdrawal mean for existing owners?
Owners can continue using and charging an iPhone 14, 14 Plus or third-generation SE with Lightning. The legislation did not remotely disable the phones or require immediate replacement. Software updates and repair service remain subject to Apple’s normal model-specific support policies, parts availability and local service terms; the USB-C rule does not set an individual phone’s support end date. Apple’s iPhone page provides general information on its devices and trade-in or recycling options.
