It starts at $149.99 in the U.S. Amazon says a new touch-and-haptics system detects where your thumb rests and creates a temporary touch dead zone, while page turns are 30% faster than on the previous generation.
What changed on the new Kindle?
The most visible change is the front: instead of a raised rim around the screen, the new Kindle has a flush-front design. That removes the physical edge some readers used as a place to rest a finger, but makes the face look more seamless.
Amazon says capacitive touch technology and haptics address accidental touches. When a reader grips the device, the Kindle detects where a finger is resting and dynamically creates a touch dead zone there. Amazon devices vice president Kevin Keith described the system as detecting the reader’s thumb and readjusting the touch area around it. That explanation is Amazon’s account of how the feature works; real-world performance is not independently established by the cited report.
Is the new Kindle thinner and lighter?
The standard six-inch model is 6.8 millimeters thick and weighs 140 grams, figures Amazon provided and TechCrunch reported in 2026. Those specifications make it a compact option for carrying, but the cited report does not give the previous generation’s thickness or weight, so it does not establish how much thinner or lighter this model is than its predecessor.

- Pick the standard Kindle if you want the most portable, lower-priced model and do not need a color screen.
- Pick Paperwhite if the larger display and higher contrast are worth the higher reported price to you.
- Pick Colorsoft if reading content in color is the reason to upgrade and its higher price fits your budget.
Compare the live regional price and the features you will actually use before buying. The standard Kindle is the only model in the report with stated thickness and weight, so the available figures do not support a like-for-like portability comparison across all three.
