On April 9, 2020, the Linux Foundation and the Fintech Open Source Foundation (FINOS) announced that FINOS would become a Linux Foundation organization. The Linux Foundation also agreed to acquire FINOS’s operating assets. The stated aim was to give open-source software and standards work in financial services a home for collaboration across the industry.

What was announced?

The announcement described FINOS as the Linux Foundation’s umbrella project for advancing open-source software and standards in financial services. The arrangement combined an organizational move—FINOS becoming a Linux Foundation organization—with the Linux Foundation’s agreement to acquire FINOS operating assets. The announcement did not provide details of the legal or governance structure beyond those terms.

The organizations presented the change as a way to expand and accelerate development through collaboration among financial-services firms and technology companies. That was the stated purpose of the arrangement, not a measured result.

What kinds of work did FINOS support?

The announcement named desktop interoperability, data modeling, and compliance as examples of the areas in which industry collaboration could advance open-source work and standards. They were examples, not an exhaustive list or a limit on FINOS’s scope.

  • Desktop interoperability: collaboration on making financial-services desktop environments and tools work together.
  • Data modeling: shared approaches to representing and working with financial data.
  • Compliance: open-source work relevant to financial-services compliance needs.

What does the relationship mean?

The move placed FINOS within the Linux Foundation’s organizational portfolio, providing an institutional home for open-source collaboration in financial services. The 2020 announcement framed that structure as a means to bring financial firms and technology companies together around shared development and standards.

Later public descriptions support the continuation of that affiliation: a Linux Foundation Events release dated February 3, 2022 described FINOS as a financial-sector project of the Linux Foundation, and FINOS’s August 27, 2025 release called it the financial-services umbrella of the Linux Foundation. Those descriptions confirm the affiliation at those dates, but do not establish detailed current governance or legal arrangements.
