Shopify Canvas is a visual workspace for creating or editing online-store themes with Sidekick, Shopify’s AI agent. Merchants can describe a change in natural language, then work directly with page elements, blocks, settings and text. Shopify announced Canvas on October 1, 2026, and said it was rolling out over the following days.
What is Shopify Canvas?
Canvas is a Shopify-native design workspace for a store’s online theme. A merchant can ask Sidekick to create or change a theme from a description, then refine the result through direct visual edits. It combines conversational instructions with hands-on control rather than requiring every change to be made by writing code.
That scope matters: Shopify describes Canvas as a way to create or edit an online-store theme. The announcement does not establish that Canvas also sets up every part of running a Shopify business, such as its products, payments or fulfillment.
How do you use Canvas?
- Open the Themes page in Shopify Admin. Shopify’s Help Center identifies this as the place to open Canvas.
- Describe the design or change you want. You can ask Sidekick to build or modify a theme from a description.
- Review and refine the result. You can edit blocks, settings and text yourself, and click page elements, move between pages or zoom in on details.
TechCrunch reported that Canvas renders the store’s real code rather than showing only a static preview. That lets merchants check interactive behavior and animation and inspect pages at different screen sizes.

Does Canvas replace Shopify’s theme editor?
The available product information establishes that Canvas can create and edit themes and that merchants can make direct edits within it. It does not establish whether Canvas replaces the existing theme editor, how the two experiences will coexist, or whether every theme and app extension is compatible. Treat Canvas as a new design surface, not as proof that other editing tools or custom development are no longer needed.
Can Canvas preview mobile and desktop layouts?
TechCrunch reported that merchants can view pages at different screen sizes. That supports responsive inspection, but the available information does not specify particular device presets, breakpoint controls or a guarantee that a design will display identically on every device.

Do you need coding skills to use Canvas?
Shopify presents Canvas as intended for merchants regardless of design experience or coding skills, and its natural-language workflow is designed to let users request changes without writing code. Direct controls for blocks, settings and text also give users a way to refine a design themselves. The announcement does not promise that coding will never be useful—for example, where a merchant needs customization beyond the controls Canvas provides.

Canvas could reduce the effort involved in getting a theme design started by letting a merchant describe a desired change and then adjust it visually. But Shopify’s launch information does not establish a price, plan eligibility, geographic availability, usage limits or the cost of any additional development a store might need. Check Shopify’s current product documentation and your Admin account before making a budget or migration decision.

Shopify Director of Product Ben Sehl said that an entrepreneur could build a custom store in twenty minutes, contrasting that with the two weeks he said it took him to get a rough store working when he built Kotn 12 years earlier.
