The company said the round brought its total funding to $204 million. The financing backs Semgrep’s application security software, which it describes as combining code, dependency, and secrets scanning with AI-assisted triage and remediation.
What Semgrep announced
Semgrep said Menlo Ventures led its Series D and that existing investors Felicis Ventures, Harpoon Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Redpoint Ventures, and Sequoia Capital also participated. The company reported $204 million in total funding after the round. Semgrep’s February 5, 2025 announcement said the capital would support its effort to build an autonomous code security platform.
The release also said Semgrep Assistant had launched about two weeks earlier. Semgrep characterized Assistant as a tool to find, triage, prioritize, and help fix security issues; these are the company’s product claims, not independent findings about performance.
What the platform covers
Semgrep describes its AppSec Platform as a suite for application security across source code, third-party dependencies, and exposed secrets. Its product page names five areas:

How Semgrep says its AI approach works
In its Series D post, CEO Isaac Evans described a hybrid approach: conventional static-analysis and dataflow techniques paired with large language models for context and communication. In Semgrep’s framing, static analysis provides rule-based detection while LLMs can help interpret findings and communicate recommendations.

Evans also acknowledged limitations he associates with LLMs, including nondeterminism, opacity, hallucinations, and smaller context windows. He argued that traditional static analysis can miss contextual clues. These points explain Semgrep’s stated product design; they are not an independent assessment of the relative strengths of either method. Evans’s post includes the company’s explanation.
What Semgrep’s figures do—and do not—show
Semgrep reported that security researchers agreed with its true-positive identification 96% of the time in its February 2025 post. The announcement material does not provide enough evaluation methodology to independently assess that figure, so it should be read as a company-reported result rather than a comparable benchmark.

The funding release also said Semgrep’s SAST, SCA, and Secrets suite served hundreds of customers at the time. That is a historical company statement from February 2025, not a current verified customer count. Neither figure establishes how the platform compares with other AppSec products.

The financing is a company and investor signal, not proof that a security product is more accurate or that it will fit a particular engineering team. For buyers assessing Semgrep or another AppSec tool, practical comparison points include coverage of first-party code, dependencies, and secrets; supported languages and analysis methods; false-positive handling; prioritization; integration with pull requests; remediation assistance; deployment and data handling; and price.
