Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 results show fast cloud growth alongside heavy infrastructure investment—but the reported $41 billion was total capital expenditure for the June quarter, not an AI-only spending figure. Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 43% year over year in that quarter. The company’s results establish strong cloud demand; they do not disclose whether AI investment has generated a specific return.
How strong were Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 results?
For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2026, Microsoft reported revenue of $331.8 billion, up 18% year over year, operating income of $155.2 billion, up 21%, and GAAP net income of $133.7 billion, up 31%, according to its July 29, 2026 earnings release.
In the quarter ended June 30, revenue was $90.0 billion, up 18%, and operating income was $40.6 billion, also up 18%. GAAP diluted earnings per share (EPS) was $4.81, up 32%. Microsoft also reported non-GAAP diluted EPS of $4.74, up 23%; the company says that measure excludes the impact from its investments in OpenAI. The release notes that a $3.2 billion gain from its investment in Anthropic was among discrete items that benefited diluted EPS by $0.27 versus the company’s prior-guidance comparison. The GAAP and non-GAAP figures use different accounting treatments, so the EPS increases should not be read as identical measures of underlying operating performance.
How fast is Azure growing?
Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 43% year over year in fiscal Q4, Microsoft reported. The company said customer demand continued to exceed available capacity and credited fleet-efficiency gains and process improvements with helping it bring capacity online earlier. The growth rate indicates strong demand, but capacity constraints also limit how quickly Microsoft can serve it.

Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $59.3 billion for the quarter, up 27%. For fiscal 2026, it exceeded $214 billion. Microsoft CFO Amy Hood said nearly 90% of full-year Microsoft Cloud revenue came from customers outside frontier model companies. That offers context about the breadth of the cloud business, but does not guarantee that growth will continue at the same rate.
What did Microsoft spend on AI infrastructure?
Microsoft reported $41 billion in capital expenditures (CapEx) for fiscal Q4. This is total quarterly CapEx, not a separately disclosed AI-spending total. Roughly two-thirds went to short-lived assets, primarily CPUs and GPUs; the remainder went to long-lived assets. The company did not break out how much of either category was specifically for AI.

- 32GB GDDR6 with 256-bit memory bus - Tackle larger, more complex projects without limits.
- PCIe Gen 5 - Unlock lightning-fast data transfers with PCIe Gen 5 support.
- GIGABYTE TURBO Fan Cooling System - Indented metal cover and blower fan increase airflow intake, while the vapor chamber, all copper heat sink, and metal frame offer efficient heat dissipation. Optimized airflow design allows for easy multi-GPU scalability.
- Double Ball Bearing Fan - Delivers superior heat resistance and rotational efficiency for better performance and a longer lifespan compared to conventional sleeve fans.
Microsoft also reported $5.6 billion in finance leases, primarily for large data-center sites, and $35.8 billion in cash paid for property and equipment. These are related but distinct measures: cash paid for property and equipment is not a substitute for the reported $41 billion in CapEx.
Microsoft’s earlier spending outlook should also be kept separate from its reported results. On its April 29, 2026 Q3 earnings call, management projected roughly $190 billion in capital expenditures for calendar 2026, including approximately $25 billion from higher component pricing. That was an outlook—not a final spending total—and covers the calendar year rather than Microsoft’s fiscal year. Management said it remained confident in returns based on demand, product usage and efficiency gains, and expected capacity constraints through at least 2026. The Q3 earnings-call materials provide the date and context for that guidance.

Is cloud growth paying for Microsoft’s AI spending?
The reported figures show cloud growth and substantial investment, but they do not establish a realized return on AI infrastructure. Microsoft did not disclose AI-specific revenue, profit or return on invested capital in these results. Copilot adoption and cloud demand are relevant business indicators, not proof that AI investment has paid for itself.
There are also reported margin trade-offs. In Q4, company gross margin was 67%, down year over year; Microsoft cited a shift in Azure sales mix, continued AI infrastructure investment and growing product usage, partly offset by efficiency gains. Microsoft Cloud gross margin was 65%, also down year over year for similar reasons. Azure segment operating margin was 41%, relatively unchanged year over year. These measures describe different parts of the business and do not isolate AI profitability.

Microsoft reported more than 30 million paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats at fiscal year-end, with net paid seat additions more than doubling sequentially in Q4. Paid seats indicate adoption, but Microsoft did not report Copilot revenue or profit in these figures. They therefore cannot be used on their own to calculate the return on AI infrastructure spending.
Quick Recap
What the results do—and do not—show
- Cloud momentum: Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 43% in fiscal Q4, while Microsoft Cloud revenue rose 27%.
- High investment: Q4 CapEx was $41 billion, with roughly two-thirds allocated to short-lived assets, primarily CPUs and GPUs.
- No AI-only spending or return figure: Microsoft did not provide a standalone AI CapEx, AI profit or AI return-on-investment figure in the cited results.
- Keep periods distinct: Fiscal 2026 ended June 30; the roughly $190 billion CapEx figure was management’s earlier outlook for calendar 2026, not a reported final total.
