Lance Crosby’s venture was StackPath, launched in July 2016 with $150 million from ABRY Partners. Its pitch was a developer-centric, API-driven security platform: a way for development and DevOps teams to incorporate security into applications as they built and operated them. The announcement described a cloud-focused mix of content delivery and security services; it does not establish what StackPath offers today.
What StackPath announced in July 2016
StackPath came out of stealth as a separate company founded by Crosby, the SoftLayer founder and a 20-year hosting-industry veteran. SoftLayer had been acquired by IBM, and Crosby left IBM before starting StackPath; the launch was not presented as a continuation of SoftLayer.
In an interview reported by Data Center Knowledge/The WHIR on July 25, 2016, Crosby described the venture’s premise: “The genesis is to create a developer-centric security platform that’s going to be API-driven, and going to allow developers and DevOps to actually integrate security into their applications as they are building it,” Data Center Knowledge/The WHIR reported. This was Crosby’s characterization of the goal at launch, not an independent demonstration of results.
What “developer-centric” meant
The launch thesis was about how teams would integrate security, not just which security features the company would sell. Rather than treating security as a separate layer to configure outside the development process, StackPath said its API-driven platform would let developers and DevOps teams apply security policies as they built and ran applications.

The 2016 reporting framed that approach as a response to the difficulty of adapting traditional security products to highly automated cloud environments. Crosby said, “After being acquired by IBM I spent the last two years seeing the shortcomings of cloud security,” according to the same launch interview. The quote explains his stated motivation; it does not establish that the proposed platform solved those shortcomings.
Services StackPath said it would offer
The launch account described four initial web-facing service categories. They covered both delivery and protection:
Rank #2
| Service category | Role in the announced offering |
|---|---|
| Content delivery network (CDN) | Deliver website content to users. |
| DDoS protection | Protect services against distributed denial-of-service attacks. |
| VPN services | Provide virtual private networking. |
| Web application firewall (WAF) | Protect web applications by filtering and monitoring traffic. |
The launch article said StackPath had acquired MaxCDN for content delivery, Fireblade for web application firewall capabilities, and Cloak for VPN capabilities. The article also described global threat intelligence across 35 points of presence. That is a launch-era company description, not a current network measurement.
Deployment scope and planned additions
Reuters reported on July 25, 2016 that Crosby said StackPath’s services would work across on-premises infrastructure and public clouds, including Amazon, Microsoft and Google cloud services. This described the intended deployment scope in 2016, rather than a verified compatibility list for current products.

StackPath also said it planned to add secure compute, storage and DNS by the end of 2016, followed by more security services. These were roadmap intentions reported at launch; the announcement alone does not confirm that those services were delivered.
Funding and what it was meant to support
Reuters reported that StackPath raised $150 million from ABRY Partners. Data Center Knowledge/The WHIR said launch funding would support mergers and acquisitions as well as infrastructure and service development. Reuters separately reported that the company had spent tens of millions acquiring several cloud-security companies; the available reporting does not fully reconcile the acquisition count and named companies across accounts.

The July 2016 coverage establishes what StackPath announced, its funding at launch, the services it described, and Crosby’s rationale for pursuing an API-led security platform. It does not establish which roadmap additions ultimately launched, which products remain available, or StackPath’s present-day operating status. Those historical announcements should not be read as a current product or availability guide.
